If I told you Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman and James Mcteigue I probably couldn't get your attention.
I'm sure if I put those names aside and told you...

V FOR REVENGE

All your eyes would start to glow.
It's undeniable that the 2005 film, based on Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name, gave one of the most iconic figures of our time.
Who doesn't know this mask?
image.png
It's become a symbol.
Symbol of anarchy, of freedom, of rebellion.
It's no coincidence that the hacker anarchist group of Anonymous made its face.
It's no coincidence that the Guy Fawkes mask is now one of the best-selling online and one of the most used masks in the world when you take to the streets to protest any abuse or injustice.
Such was the impact of the film.
It's hard to say where Alan Moore's merits end and the film's merits begin.
When you start from a cult like that graphic novel the debt is always heavy, a bit as it would happen thinking about Watchmen for example.
And with Watchmen this movie has a lot to share.
One thing about everyone:

The role of the anti-hero

V, is he the anti-hero by definition? Or is he a hero?
Is his total and totalizing rebellion the result of heroic behavior or of an outlaw trying to do the right thing?
The figure of V is so disruptive precisely because it defies our time, a time where there is no room for heroic figures, for people who aim for the common good, who put against the extreme sacrifice for a greater good.

image.png
Che Guevara was perhaps the last great hero the world has seen.
A non-peaceful, armed hero.
Not Gandhi, then, but the exact opposite.
If the tyrant goes further, kills, controls, enslaves, then perhaps we must oust him using his own weapons, using violence.
In this V for Revenge breaks the patterns, breaks the Hollywood epic of the good hero, without stain and without fear.
The figure of the man, or woman, willing to all but not to be like the enemies they fight.
V is a man, a figure, a legend who wants to get his hands dirty, does not want to come to terms with ethics, with the purity of the "good" John Wayne style.
He's not a Marvel superhero, he's not a DC superhero. He is a man in the flesh, without superpowers, without masters, with a prevailing moral code that has as its ultimate goal to fight for freedom.
It's gonna take bombs, death, blood to get there. Then blood it is. Let violence flood the streets of this corrupt world.
And it is as beautiful as seeing that the most famous face of the 2000s is actually the symbol of a faceless struggle, of a faceless man who takes refuge behind a mask.
His is an epic, timeless battle that starts as a revenge and ends up being a desperate and passionate cry for revolt.
A revolt that starts from within and manifests itself with an indelible visual power, indelible as bloodstains on a white apron.
One must be willing to do anything to achieve what one believes in.

V PER VENDETTA

Tutti i vostri occhi inizierebbero a brillare.

Great choice for this round. I love the political atmosphere in this movie. Plus, Natalie Portman is in it. ;)

Good luck in the contest, @serialfiller.
