Shame: The callus

E mentre facevo disastri, ridevo.
Ora ho il callo, ora so amare.

I met him one evening, one of the many evenings that I didn't want to go out.
Maria forced me, dragged, to a dinner with a group of motorcyclists, to me, that I had never been on a motorcycle, that I did not want to get on it and that certainly no one would have wanted as a backpack.
But this is a friend, one who drags you to a dinner where you didn't want to go so as not to let yourself be depressed at home alone.
I met him there; he sat in front of me and we started talking, joking, laughing.
I was stupid and funny, stupid and funny as I have never been before and never after that evening.
He was nice, he was not handsome but he was intelligent, he was charming and made me laugh.
So I did a lot of stupid things; in the end I spilled a glass of wine on myself, I dirty the whole tablecloth, I filled the plate with wine, I also dirty Maria: I made a mess.
And while I was messing up, I was laughing.
I was laughing because he looked at me and spoke to me as if I existed and it doesn't happen to me often, in fact it never happens to me.
I am not ugly, I have a beautiful face, I am intelligent, nice, ironic, sociable and fat, very fat, not obese, but fat enough not to exist.
Men do not see me, their gaze goes through my flab and magically rests on some slender girl behind me.
Although she is ugly, even if she is stupid, indeed, especially if she is stupid.
It is said of a man that he can also be ugly, as long as he is at least an asshole.
It is said of a woman that she can also be ugly, as long as she is at least slutty.
I say: a woman doesn't even have to be a slut, as long as she's at least stupid ... and I'm not.
When you are fat, fat as a child, you call it a little to be ignored, excluded, not considered.
My callus was not yet complete at the time, I was young and I had learned early on not to ask, not to wait, not to hope, to be transparent but I didn't have a callus.
I've always found it ridiculous that a thin girl is called "transparent" when everyone notices her; the transparent one was me, who, if you wanted you can see me, so easily...
But the gaze of men does not move in a straight line, when it arrives near a fat woman it turns around her and continues, as if there was nothing in between.
All this at best, because then, especially as a child, there are teases.
As children both males and females are bad but, even if only to make fun of you and mortify you, they consider you: you still exist.
Afterwards, when the eyes become dense, for you who are fat there is not even one, if it happens you know it is a mistake and you turn to see to who it was directed and there is always another one waiting for you to move.
At that age you begin to disappear and slowly get used to it, they don't make fun of you anymore, they don't tease you: they completely ignore you.
So you don't feel like being stupid, even if you are stupid, let alone if you are not.
You don't even want to be a bitch, because if you do it you are ridiculous, you are pitiful, you are sad, you look like a bum in front of the church asking for alms, while those skinny and sluts don't ask for alms, they do it.
The difference is no small matter.
So you are not stupid, you are not a slut, you do not even leave the house and, when you do not go out, no one is looking for you, your phone is silent, there are no text messages, phone calls, rings: nothing.
I was like that before that evening.
Then I started being stupid, but after, after he looked at me, after he saw me, after he realized that I existed.
Being stupid is fun and I did it in such an intelligent way, so over the top, that I also liked myself.
I was stupid in the way that only a person with my culture, with my intelligence and with my extra pounds can be.
I thought he liked me, I thought I stopped his gaze on me.
It was only a moment.
That moment lasted two years.
Two years of miles and miles by car, motorcycle trips made by car, dinners, aperitifs, evenings, long chats, a thousand interests in common, music, politics, everything.
All just to see him, to be with him, to talk to him.
In that moment that lasted two years he always looked at me as if I existed, he spoke to me, he was always ironic, nice, charming, always like that first night.
Time passed and I did not find the courage to tell him, that I was only there for him, I never even mentioned it to him.
Until yesterday evening, I found courage last night because in these two years the callus has grown, has matured.
I threw up all my expectations, my hopes, my car rides: everything.
I didn't want an answer, I just wanted the callus to be complete.
I already knew his answer to the question I didn't ask him.
I found the courage to tell him everything just because that moment that lasted two years was finally over and I no longer felt anything for him.
I always knew that he liked another, a pretty, skinny, stupid, I had no need for him to tell me.
But he didn't tell me this, he only asked me why I had never said anything to him, why I had wasted so much time for a no.
At that moment my wound closed, my callus was complete.
This morning I woke up another.
Now I have the callus, now I know how to love.
