The "beauty" in literature

In literature, the search for beauty is also found in the formal beauty of the works that are written. There is therefore attention also in the way of writing and in the style that is used. More specifically, D’Annunzio wrote a manifest work that well expresses these new aesthetic trends: "Pleasure" features Andrea Sperelli, the author's alter ego. He fully embodies aestheticism, since for this character art is the absolute value: life is conceived as a work of art. It is therefore very inclined to beauty and any form of pleasure. For D’Annunzio, the esthete is a man who has a strong aesthetic sense who manages to assert himself on others. In this, he refers to Nietzsche and his "superman" philosophy. In reference to this, a fundamental concept is also found in Oscar Wilde. He professes the concept of "art for art", which becomes a real lifestyle. Moreover, Oscar Wilde can be considered as the father of "dandyism". In fact, he expresses the figure of the "dandy" in his work "The portrait of Dorian Gray", underlining its refinement and extravagant personality.

Actuality

At the same time, by taking a look at current events, it is possible to rediscover the concept of the cult of beauty even today. Nowadays, the pursuit of beauty is a common element for many. We could define ourselves as an "image society": the advent of the internet and social media has allowed the spread of a very large amount of images every day. Just think, for example, of a social media like Instagram, which is based precisely on the publication of images or photographs. Everyone can see them and it is possible to interact, commenting and putting a "like". Every day, thousands and thousands of photographs are posted and it is as if, in doing so, we "showcase" our life. Publishing an image on a social media means making a small part of us or our tastes public.
