Music Video Review Challenge: Disconnection Notice by Pupil

(Edited)

Good morning! I just came across the Asean Hive Community and saw that there is an on going contest so I might as well join before I sleep. It's still a few hours before the contest ends so here's a link if you wish to participate: "ASEAN Hive Music Video Review Challenge 50 Hive In Prizes".

I have a lot of songs inside my head and I'm having a difficult time which to share for my entry. But I'm deciding to pick this certain song because it's the music genre that I currently like aside from it's in English (easily understood by non-Filipinos) and has a creepyish meaning behind the lyrics. The song I chose is "Disconnection Notice" by the band Pupil.

Pupil is a Filipino rock band composed of four members: Ely Buendia (vocalist/guitarist), Dok Sergio (bassist), Jerome Velasco (lead guitarist), and Wendell Garcia (drummer). The band was formed in 2004 and is still active today. One well-known member of this band is Ely Buendia who is the former vocalist of the iconic band, Eraserheads, whose songs were recently adapted in the musical, "Ang Huling El Bimbo The Musical". Pupil was formerly known as "The Mongols" and was renamed to Pupil after some members left. Ely got the name Pupil from a medical book.

Going to their song Disconnection Notice, the song was released in 2007. Even after 13 years and me still in high school back then, I still remember this song quite clearly because it's catchy and I must say, one of the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) that stands out. I find the part "Disco-nnection notice" really fun to listen to. This song is also on the weekly top songs of a music video channel back in the day.

If you first see the title, you'll probably think it's about an electricity bill, but it's not.

People who have heard the songs speculate that the song Disconnection Notice was about the Ozone Disco Fire in Quezon City last March 18, 1996 where 162 people, teenagers and adults who were celebrating their graduation, were trapped inside the nightclub and died. The tragedy is among the unforgettable and saddest accidents in the country. The story creeps me out every time I read about it. Read one of the survivors' story here.

The song begins with the lyrics: "There is no escaping. There is no replacing." This could pertain to the trapped people in the bar and the lives which can no longer be brought back.

"Dressed so swell. They're dancing at the gate of hell." Now this part clearly tells about the incident. Who would have thought the place where they should be having fun would be their worst nightmare and death for most of them.

"Turn off the lights now." This could mean, the fun or party is over.

Some fun facts of the music video:

  • The "hospital" in the music video was shot in one of the buildings of De La Salle University, one of the top universities in the Philippines.

  • The girl dancing is Glaiza De Castro, now a famous actress in the country.

In my own thoughts, the girl dancing energetically at the beginning represents the night in the Ozone Disco before the fire happened. And then she survives the fire and is sent to a hospital. She seem to have developed some kind of mental illness out of the traumatic incident because the hospital seems like a mental hospital.

Near the end of the video, some of them were seen wearing traditional Filipino dress while dancing "Tinikling", a traditional Filipino dance using two bamboo sticks. For me, that part is probably an activity for them to get over the trauma or maybe a subtle message to the viewers to embrace traditional Filipino dance instead of going out to clubs to party.

That's all! I wish you liked the song. The tune of this song, despite being 13 years old, still sounds modern. I think this song will never go old just like how the story of the Ozone Disco is preserved in our minds and throughout history.
