Despite being a majority Buddhist nation, Hinduism is everywhere in Thai culture including the epic Ramakien. In true Thai style they've adapted and mixed Hinduism into Buddhism although a small percentage are still pure Hindu. Considering the Buddha was born a Hindu this is not surprising. Hinduism came into Siam (pre-Thailand) from the Khmer Empire (pre-Cambodia).

Ganesha or Gannapati. In Thai the name is Phra Phikanet. He's worshiped for success in business and to remove obstacles.

The Rooster!
I tried to find out some information about the significance of the rooster in Thailand without much success. Perhaps the idea of up and early will lead to a successful business. Regardless I see them quite a bit around successful shops so it must be working!

@JustinParke here on behalf of ASEAN Hive Community.

Seems Thailand still embraces the Hindu roots a little. I don't think Cambodia ever embraced it again as strongly as it did pre-Khmer Rouge times. Thanks for sharing this @chrisinphuket.

Thanks for the comment, reblog, upvote! Yes actually in central Thailand Hinduism is still quite strong. The people may consider themselves Buddhist yet still pray to the Hindu gods. Rama and Ganesh are the two strongest it seems. In Phuket town there is a South Indian Hindu temple but rarely do I see many people there. These shots are from Phuket town just walking around. When I was in Isaan closer to Cambodia many of the towns had names from Hinduism. Yes I suppose the Khmer Rouge wiped out whatever traces of Hinduism there was in Cambodia. Even the Buddhist temples I saw looked quite unused. Just full of monks. Mix of cultures and history always interests me so much.

I've always thought Thailand is this monotheistic culture and country until about a few years ago and that lately, I got exposed to Islam in Thailand which is interesting given how the society is conflicted to Islam teaching. I was once very interested with religion all over the world and trying to understand how they can co-exist and co-living with little friction but I suppose it is still s sensitive topic and time wasting. Even when you try to be so open-minded, there will always be people who are going to convert you into their belief system. So, I decided to stop investigating religion and belief system for the sake of my own sanity.

Well first thank for commenting! I'd say just don't take it too seriously. Even Indonesian Muslims incorporate Hinduism into their belief system. In Phuket, I wouldn't consider any of the religious groups strict in any way and everyone gets along fine. In the south of Thailand, there have been issues before but that is mainly with the government. These days even there is quite peaceful. I think there's absolutely no reason why we can't all just get along. Respect each other. I do see your point that some religious people try to convert. Personally I think we should just let each other live and as I said respect. I know quite a few people that have married from different religions here...
