There is is. One of the all time classics. Marios first ever appearance in a videogame even before he was known as Mario. He was names Jumpman in this originally! Just a little fun fact for you.

In fact, I don't know if there is another game where a character has become so popular without being the main character of the title, Mario was undoubtedly the best decision they could have made at that time, it would be sad to see a world without Super Mario, Mario Kart and other great titles.
