The decade of the 90's was the birth of a large number of franchises of various games which are still alive and delivering new titles to their saga. One of the genres that saw the birth of great titles in those years was Fighting, incredible sagas such as Mortal Kombat and many others that originated at that time, another franchise perhaps not so popular but which has certainly had continuity over the years with a large number of titles is Samurai Shodown, a saga that originated in 1993 when it was available for several consoles among which were the Sega Genesis, SNES and PlayStation. This franchise could be considered current until today where its latest title was released in the year 2019 for the consoles of the moment such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Samurai Shodown belongs to the Fighting genre but the same stood out among the other Fighting games of that time by having some rather unusual mechanics and rarely seen in the titles of this genre. The story and objective of Samurai Shodown is quite simple and common for the time where an evil and powerful enemy sought to destroy the world and it was our mission to defeat him to complete the story. Unlike some titles in this game you did not get to play with the final boss once you defeated them.

In Samurai Shodown we have a fairly large number of people available to play where there are a total of 12 characters, each with its name, design, nationality and fighting style. There are fast and agile characters such as the Ninja or Samurai who in exchange for their agility have less resistance and in the same way we have large and heavy characters which will be much slower but have a greater resistance and cause much more damage with each of their attacks. Another aspect to consider regarding the design of the characters is the mechanics of keys or grabs which are attacks that in addition to causing damage also send the opponent away from your character, a small character can never perform grabs to another larger character so this is a small disadvantage of the light characters against the heavy ones.

Samurai Shodown like almost all fighting games has an extensive system of combos where by combining the four attack buttons together with the arrow keys we can perform different attacks from strong short-range hits to ranged attacks that are very useful to keep a fight at a distance, a disadvantage of these ranged attacks is that at the time of performing them the character usually stays still for a moment while the attack is performed and if your enemy dodges the blow can easily attack you when you can not defend yourself or move.

In fighting games it is very common to see characters with different weapons which they use in their basic attacks such as Katanas, knives, chains, axes, among others. All these weapons end up being part of the character himself and often does not mean an advantage beyond giving more scope to some characters but in Samurai Shodown the weapons of the characters have a unique mechanic where it is possible to disarm the characters and even throw the weapon by an attack, this causes the weapon is stuck in the ground and must pick it up again the character who lost it, when you are unarmed your attacks will be weaker compared to being armed and it is somewhat evident that if you are not hitting with your weapon you cause less damage.

The conditions to win the fight are easy, you must defeat your enemy in two rounds where at the end of a round both recover all the life and will return to fight in the next round but unlike most titles of this genre in Samurai Shodow in possible that you have the luck to recover health in the middle of the fight and this is because randomly and with very little probability some of the characters or spectators in the background of the stage will throw a plate of food to the ground which when you pick it up regenerates a small amount of health. Samurai Shodown not only gives us unique mechanics but also has very good and colorful graphic designs that result in combos and attacks much more striking and intense to see.
