Child of Light | Once Upon a Time | An Indie Game?

After waiting so long, I finally find myself playing Child of light, a game that I had wanted to play since its launch in 2014 by Ubisoft Montreal. Child of light is an indie game? In several well-known videogames media they catalogue it like that and it is because, in spite of being developed by a big company, the budget and the team behind the development, was small. My opinion? I consider it an indie game because of the way you connect with the game and that's why I decided to incorporate it in the Wednesday of indie or independent games.

Before writing this article, I usually play between 1 to 3 hours, to share my first impression about the game so don't worry, you won't find spoilers in this article, all the content in images is from the first moments of the game.

Child of light is a true story for children, one of those that begin with: once upon a time. Or at least it's the first impression the game makes on you since you press the start button and start seeing the first cinematic of the game. Another aspect that makes you think it's a children's story is the graphical aspect. It is extremely beautiful and makes me believe that I am literally playing a children's story book.

In Child of light we will start playing with Aurora, a princess who seems to be lost and we will have to help her find her way home. As in every fairy tale, the dangers are present and we will have to defend ourselves with the powers of light to fight the darkness and make way. Child of light is an adventure game, with a turn-based battle system that turns the game into an RPG. We will have to level up, equip weapons, improve them, learn skills, among other elements that are present in role-playing games.

The battle system, is a typical turn-based battle system, where using certain skills can make them run faster or slower. You will have enough time to select an action and let everything run automatically. If you have played games like Final Fantasy 7, you are surely familiar with this system. However, there is an extra that makes the battle system stand out in Child of light, it is a second character that accompanies Aurora called Igniculus, it is like a spirit that you can move freely around the screen and you can use it to slow down the enemies and allow Aurora to attack first.

I liked the skill system quite a lot, maybe it's because I love unlocking skills and improvements as I level up. In Child of light we will gain points when we level up and these allow us to unlock skills and improvements for our characters. Without a doubt this is a reason to level up all the characters and acquire all the skills and improvements available.

As we advance through the world, we will be able to move Aurora freely, complete puzzles, discover treasures, etc. All this as if you were playing a platform and adventure game, but when you enter a battle, the system will be activated by turns and you will enjoy a real RPG. We will fight against bosses, we will discover secrets, an evil witch and a soundtrack that activates our senses and connects us in a unique way with this game.

While you discover the history of the game, you will learn the kindness that has the light when the darkness covers everything. With so few hours of gameplay, Child of light has completely captivated me and I am sure that, if you are a fan of role-playing games and adventure, you will enjoy Child of light from the moment you press the start button.
