Many times it happens to us that there are games that we never really considered or even knew of their existence and when the time comes that you find out and try it you completely regret not having known about it before, something like that happened to me. Generally, I am a fan of the artistic part of a game in a big way, or at least I like and appreciate it when a game manages amazing visuals, and this added with action and adventure are winning formulas to capture my attention.

Katana Zero is a game that came to my attention thanks to a friend who recommended it to me a few months ago, yes months, as you read it. The truth is that it usually happens to me that a game is recommended to me and among so many lists of games to try one gets absorbed and forgets to look for it and try it, that happens to me often. However a few days ago remembering the fact I decided to look for it and the truth is that it completely caught my attention, already the fact of the name was something appealing but watching videos on youtube I said "I definitely must try it" so I downloaded it and here I bring you my first impressions of the game during the 4 hours of gameplay I gave it.

We start in a rather nice menu, honestly the neo-noir Cyberpunk or Far Cry 3 style: Blood Dragon is something I love in itself but to this the game adds oriental themes (it's kind of obvious from the name) in which we start in a tutorial that teaches you the basic mechanics of the game, at first I thought my pc was running it at low fps but it turns out the character itself moves in a pretty slow style, that's cool because you feel like you have some control of the character plus they teach you basic moves like running, jumping, sliding, your katana cuts bullets (brutal) and you can stop time.

The first thing is, the music is wonderful, our character at the start of each level puts on headphones to listen to music while killing, something we would all do if we were assassins with katanas and skills, of course, if you know what I mean, to de-stress while pretending to play Fruit Ninja in real life Lol. But seriously, the music is amazing, each level starts with that kind of Techno that makes you cheer up more at the beginning of each level, plus on the side, you get the phone with the song that is playing, all are songs by an artist named Bill Kiley who was responsible for the soundtrack of the game, I have not heard them all but of those that I have managed to hear my favorite is Chinatown.

The playability is amazing, what can I say? The katanas are brutal and the fact of performing combos makes the experience even better, the truth is that the immensity of combos and the amazing way in which the enemies fall makes going around with your katana something addictive. It brings out the samurai in you and bursting through the doorway and splitting it when an enemy is on top of it is one of the most satisfying things, on top of this the fact that as I mentioned splitting bullets with your katana or even returning them to your enemy makes you feel practically invincible although there may be the occasion that you make a mistake the game gives you the ability to rewind and go back to the beginning of the scene.

Something that pleasantly surprised me about Katana Zero is that it gives us many alternatives that will define what happens in our story, and I didn't think that they would affect us but then I realized that they did when after passing a level the police arrived and a secretary with whom in a couple of lines of dialogue I misbehaved (she asked a lot of questions) directly told on me to the police and that caused the death of them and the secretary, which I'm sure would have covered me if I had answered her kindly. In the end, the game subtly reminds me that my decisions have power and to try not to take the paths that lead to unnecessary civilian death.

These decisions are usually in lines of dialogue that you can choose to respond rudely if you do not wait to tell you the whole message or if you are patient you get among other alternatives. Also, our character will place the head in scenarios within his flat in which we have several alternatives, I found this curious as it speaks volumes about the elaborate modeling that offers the game, in which their levels have no loss and that do not subject the story to that repetitive cycle of Mission, you go to the place, you kill and complete the objective, you leave and so on.

Honestly, the game reminded me in that part to Hotline Miami, a game that I already talked about, and of course, they have no similarity in terms of cameras, story, characters, absolutely nothing but that touch of before starting a level they encourage you with music that gives that preamble to the player that begins a massacre is curious, plus when I complete a level always tells me "Phase completed" as in HM or that the character is someone who follows orders to kill for a group of which he does not know why he does it. I just found it curious that they both have that neo-noir style too I was talking about.

Graphically the game is a work of art that handles pixelated as the main theme, honestly, I have not seen a game so beautiful and detailed care in general, its soundtrack and its visuals make it a pleasure to play it and feel more and more that you are facing a great game, or at least it was the feeling that gave me at the beginning. I see it as a work of art that rarely a game gives that feeling with just minutes of trying it, and this one surprised me pleasantly in general. A clear example that it is not necessarily a great graphic engine to surprise the public.

The dialogues and the story is another thing I don't want to tell too much about it because my idea is not to spoil the plot, on the contrary, I invite you to develop it yourself. But it is a story that gives more and more to think about, at the beginning, many unknowns make you think what he might be thinking but little by little that intrigue is what makes you get more hooked and want to continue discovering it. In it, a complicated character with many problems awaits us, whose past is practically blurred, but this plot will help us to follow his development progressively.

Definitely Katana Zero couldn't have pleasantly surprised me more, It a great game without a doubt that just made me want to kill myself for not having listened to my friend before. Its aesthetics, soundtrack, katanas, gameplay, story, katanas, visuals, characters, did I say katanas? and so on are what makes it worth it. A game that you notice is worked from head to toe and are one of those games that despite being independent makes you wonder why they do not have more fame, however, the fact that this does not take anything away, it is a masterpiece, in my opinion, an ode to the art that is a pleasure to play it.

As I said, it's worth it if you haven't played it, at least so far I've found it to be something tremendous and it's one of those games that you have to try if you want to. In itself its story is immersive and I'm looking forward to continuing to develop it, if you made it this far thank you very much and I hope it has made you pay attention to Katana Zero if you didn't know it, see you in the next one.

Thank you - ¡Gracias!
