Dino Crisis - The cause of my childhood fears | Game review

Survival horror games are a love-hate in my life because, to be honest, I have always been reluctant to play to be scared, I never found the fun in it, so much so that when my friends told me about Silent Hill and how wonderful it was (and yes, it is and always will be) I never entered into discussions and preferred to ignore the subject. However, there is a game that I managed to try in those years, and more the fear factor that I managed to cause made me leave aside the feeling of misgivings to try them and give them a chance.

The game I will talk about is Dino Crisis, specifically in its first version released for the PlayStation 1. A very memorable classic that many of us will remember as one of the works of Capcom, yes, that company that made the classic Street Fighter and Resident Evil, who does not know these franchises? Nothing bad could come out of it and with Dino Crisis was also the case, Dinosaurs, thriller and horror, suspense, honestly one of the strangest horror sensations that I got to have and that horror and suspense factor was what made it more memorable for many like me for example.

The plot of Dino Crisis is that we are an intelligence team summoned to address a rather disturbing issue on an island. There was an energy project carried out on it by a renowned doctor who is known to be dead but the information comes out that he faked his death. Our mission is to infiltrate the island to see his whereabouts and capture him. Everything is perfect up to this point, an infiltration mission in the Splinter Cell style, but it is only when we enter that we learn that the island is plagued by dinosaurs that massacre every human that crosses their path.

From the intelligence team, the character we will control will be a member named Regina, with whom we will live the greatest scares and chases with dinosaurs. We have a team as I said that throughout the plot serves to complement it and continue in it. I think the story is perhaps one of the weakest points of the game as its characters and complementation of everyone don't help at all to contribute to the plot.

At the time when I played it was not a stellar point that I realized since obviously when you play it is not a factor that you take so much into account but then revisiting it a few days ago if I miss that. Since that factor of the little touch of personification and that they tell you the story of the characters to involve you more in the whole mess of what is lived is something that characterized so many good games of the time (Metal Gear Solid serves perfectly as an example) is what carries the player to be more interested in the story and even more, to make it memorable.

Surely when you hear about Dino Crisis the most talked about is "It's a Resident Evil with dinosaurs" well yes and no. Obviously, it is a survival horror that bases much of its mechanics in RE as this was one of the first survival horror released at the time and created a standard of how they could or should be. What does differentiate Dino Crisis from RE is the freedom of the character and the lack of pigeonholing in small areas like houses that the first Resident Evil games had. In it, you can notice that the scenarios that we explore are larger and wider that as I said allow us greater freedom of movement.

Undoubtedly one of the things I like the most and that is why for me this game treasures a special place in my memories is the use of the camera as a measure to generate tension in the environment in any scene that was made. Damn ... This was undoubtedly what scared me the most when I played it because those angles and close-ups of the cameras when the dinosaur was chasing you made the scene seem more dangerous than it was and together with the sound and the dinosaurs of the hell that looked like super beasts made you tense.

It seems that Dr. Kirk has made enough of a mess already.

At the time I remember that one of the criticisms of Capcom with Resident Evil 6 was that what was a flagship franchise known for being a survival horror became an action shooter. Obviously to the fans of the franchise before that was something annoying and criticized because when a game that in theory is called survival horror you add endless weapons and ammunition to kill your enemies loses that touch of survival, right?.

In this case, Dino Crisis is of the purest essence of the genre because literally, a gun is not a tool that makes you instantly kill a dinosaur. Respecting standards achieves quite the task of in some instances killing one but the game does not abuse this and allows that in many occasions the smartest way is to escape. With that said, the most important thing to know is that Dino Crisis gives you the weapons and medicines to survive, which is what the game is all about, not murdering everyone around and healing you left and right.

14.jpg

The game also allows us to modify our equipment, with this we can change factors such as from the weapon we choose to use to the bullets that it can carry. On some occasions certain specific bullets can save us from having a great and especially bad time, since killing a dinosaur is a difficult task that not even 3 shotgun blasts can achieve. For this reason, at least on many occasions, I was saved by the numbing bullet that, as its name indicates, manages to put the dinosaur to sleep.

Another thing that always happened to me was the fact of taking into account the keys or secrets through the importance of the documents in the game to obtain improvements. Generally, some puzzles or keys are usually stored in the documents we find and if we want to access what they contain it is important to remember them because the game does not store these documents in our inventory to have access to them whenever we want, then if we advance further and do not remember anything we will have to turn back.

Also, something I liked was the fact of choice, I know I say it a thousand times but it is something cool that serves to give some prominence to us players. In Dino Crisis some moments give us to choose between several decisions or causes of decision and what we take if it affects the progressive plot in the future. I would have liked to see more of this introduced to the game, however, it's also not that big of a deal to complain about and it does lead to some endings.

Honestly, the fact of nostalgia gives it a pretty big weight in my mind but it usually happens that a game that we remember with great nostalgia and emotion when we revisit it we see it differently, maybe without those eyes of love? (Or maybe I would call it inexperience) Anyway, playing it again several flaws came to light that undoubtedly made me think that Dino Crisis is a good game but it has some bad points as I said above.

Dino Crisis is undoubtedly a classic that many of us will remember, although it has weak points, the fact that it fulfills what it sets out to do, which is the option of fear and tension that gives a survival horror, more than fulfills it. The game is quite tense and makes the fact that a dinosaur appears to you as something that ironically is quite hated but generally will be usual for us. I think it's more than a Resident Evil with dinosaurs and for the time a lot of modeling was pretty well done implementing 3D modeling and dynamic shots that were wide.

It tends to happen to remember something fondly and as the best, and revisit it and see its obvious shortcomings. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that it was a title that is part of a classic and the good memories it brought me are what's important. It is a game that anyone who has not played it or is not very familiar with survival horror (difficult nowadays) should give a try and experience one of the purest essences of what were the beginnings of the genre. If you made it this far thank you very much for reading and see you in the next one.
