The oldest anarchy server in Minetest

Alright, now that we've gotten the obvious FitMC meme out of the way with that title, today we'll be looking at one of Minetest's oldest actively updated anarchy servers.

A house I built on the server in question

"Oops! All Chaos" is one of Minetest's oldest anarchy servers. It's built on top of the MineClone2 game mode and features the Faithful32 texture pack, giving it a feeling very similar to the early years of Minecraft.

While there is a much older server that's still online, I have ruled it out as it is not running Minetest 5.0+ and can't be connected to using the latest Minetest version. That being the JT2 test server.

There's also another server which is slightly older, and while it can be connected to via the latest Minetest version, they're not using Minetest as their server and instead use something else that's compatible. This would be the far more popular Catlandia server.

Now, onto this server in particular. It appears to have started on April 1st of 2019 with the earliest date I could confirm it being active being June of 2019 via the Internet Archive.

I've spent some time playing, even building a house in a secluded area of the server. You'll find plenty of houses as well as ruins while playing, and the spawn area is surprisingly well kept.

There seems to be far less of a destruction mindset on this server, far less than other anarchy servers. While you will see plenty of ruins, it's nothing like what you would see on a server like 2b2t.

This server also has a gameplay mechanic I wouldn't expect to see in a game like this. If you're in the dark for too long, you'll start taking damage. I'm guessing this is to discourage people from building unlit structures.

As with most anarchy servers, some areas of the map are essentially lag traps and will cause extreme lag spikes, so watch out for those.

I'm considering running a weekly challenge here on Hive regarding activities on this server, such as building. Aside from that, if you decide to play on this server, consider fixing any ruins you see. Might as well set a good example.

As for how to play, you can head over to minetest.net to download the latest Minetest version. The server is available in the public game list, your first join may take quite some time as the server's assets are downloaded.

Also, neoxian.city has a server too if you're looking for something more building oriented and less chaotic. You can often find the information to join it in their weekly newsletter.

If you play, maybe we'll see each other online. I hope everyone has a good day/night.

I was looking at anarchy servers a while back for my son to join, since he wanted to play with other people but he also loves destroying absolutely everything. Thought it'd be a good fit.

Couldn't really find anything though. Most were complete bedrock wastelands at spawn and there was no escape. 😕

Sounds like Minecraft PE/BE, there are no server sided checks on inventory in the pocket/bedrock editions of Minecraft so people can effectively generate any item they want.

That issue doesn't exist in Minecraft Java Edition and to my knowledge doesn't exist in Minetest either, they both make sure that players only have items they've received.

I wouldn't really consider anarchy servers suitable for anyone under about 14-15 years old, given their nature they often bring out the worst in people.

As for spawns being wastelands, that's very common, though they shouldn't be made of bedrock. Minecraft's oldest anarchy server, 2b2t, has spawn wasteland that's roughly 10km² and it's such a challenge to escape that there's actually an official speedrun leaderboard for escaping it.

If your son is younger than about 14, I'd recommend running your own server. It might be a bit daunting at first but really isn't all that difficult once you have everything up and running.

I know all about how to make a server, haha, used to host one 10 years ago. Not daunting at all. I just personally didn't want to host an anarchy server, hence my desire to find someone else's. 2b2t was the first one I actually looked at, and yeah, definitelyyyyy a massive spawn wasteland.

This is really cool! I'd never heard of Minetest before, and it looks great. I especially like how there's an android implementation that's just the same game with no separation, which is much better than the awkward but necessary bedrock vs java split. And I love older servers, so I think I'll actually take a peek.

Lol I got minecraft for $8 before anyone even knew what it was, I think I have the steam version and Xbox version as well. What a oddly popular title, its crazy how its still coming up.

Minecraft has never been on steam, are you thinking of of the Bedrock Edition on the Microsoft Store? Anyone who owned the original/Java Edition before Bedrock came out got Bedrock for free.

Personally I think Minetest has more promise, it's open source and is extremely easy to mod, just needs more polish and it would be perfect.

I had to log in with my email and password at the main menu, I only played it for a few days but remember enjoying it overall. Probably as you said some legacy version, it was never on any official platform when i had it. No even sure if i could play with friends or if there was a xp and level system.

I played Minetest a while ago when I didn't had minecraft. It feels like it has a completely different approche. I think the Minetest is more mod based. Even the world generation is a mod (called default). It is really easy to write a mod for Minetest.
