Tiger-Heli is a vertical-scrolling action shooter arcade game developed by Toaplan in 1985. Taito produced it for arcades in Japan. It was published in North America by Romstar for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1986.

I have played this great game by way of the pirated compilation games cartridges available for the Famicom (Japan's version of the NES) during the early 1990s.

The Story

You control the Tiger-Heli. A stealthy, super attack helicopter. So you must fight the endless waves of military vehicles, shatter the enemy defense lines, and destroy the military headquarters of a nation of war freaks.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics are pretty damn good for a NES game. You can see some things in detail and nothing looks too bad.

The music seem alright, the action themes of each level, along with the music of the landing sequence all sound good to me. The sound effects are crude. The blasts/explosions seem muffled and noise of everything else is poorly done.

The Gameplay

Tiger-Heli has got enough gameplay in it to keep you busy. The replay value is a bit good. You play as a combat helicopter hovering over the enemy territory shooting things up.

You can shoot buildings and vehicles. Your enemies are mostly military vehicles, gun turrets, and bosses. Shooting a bonus with the right color, can get you a mini-helicopter, who will be at your side and will shoot in another direction.

You can also get infinite missiles and two cluster bombs that you can refill if you get to shoot a bonus of another color. If you get shot, one of your remaining bombs wil explode, destroying the enemy that hit you. No bombs? Then it is game over for you.

The game will take you awhile to beat it. Like most NES games of that time, there are no saves. Playing this on a NES emulator will eliminate that saving problem.

No need to save randomly? You just have to be good at vertical shooters and play smart.

My Verdict

You have to bear in mind that this is a NES game, and playing it for the graphics is not a very bright idea. So avoid this one if you are after eye-candy filled games. Tiger-Heli is a bit of fun and has just enough good replay value if you like vertical shooters.

Play it on NES emulators if you need saving your game and want to avoid repetitive gameplay a lot. Or just be a true bad-ass gamer and play it on the NES.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
