The new PS VR Controller

Nearly three weeks ago I wrote about PlayStation finally announcing the new iteration of PS VR for PS5. You can read that post of mine here. At the time we were only given a few very minor details, no photos.

This week on PlayStation's Official Blog we were given our first images of what a portion of this new VR experience will look like.

What better place to start than the VR controllers. This is where PlayStation has failed to innovate for the longest time. Gamers are currently still stuck using the PlayStation Move controllers, which released all the way back in 2010 for PS3. This is the main reason I have never purchased a PS VR myself. It is pretty astonishing to think that even today, PlayStation is still relying on such old tech to propel their PS VR to the top of the virtual reality world.

We know PlayStation is capable of creating very unique controllers thanks to their new DualSense on PS5. This controller is one of the main reasons so many people are choosing the PS5 over the Xbox Series X & S. The haptics and adaptive triggers are truly revolutionary. Every single game that I have played that has implemented the new DualSense tech has become far more immersive. I could never see myself choosing to play on another console and miss out on the fine opportunity to have a better experience on PS5, thanks to the DualSense controller.

It was only a matter of time before this must have DualSense technology was adopted by the virtual reality spectrum of PlayStation's repertoire. Updating the PS VR controllers was long overdue, but now it is seeming well worth the wait. PlayStation must have had a plan all along and they are proving that patience pays off in the long term.

Lets take a closer look at the four official images of the next-gen VR controllers that were released by PlayStation:

New Features

The next-gen PS VR controller will enable gamers feel like they are living their gaming experiences more than ever. There are five key features, including some tech brought over from the DualSense. The vision that PlayStation has for the next generation of virtual reality clearly is remarkable.

Lets dive deeper into these five new features unveiled for PlayStaion VR controller:

  • Adaptive triggers: Each VR controller (Left and Right) includes an adaptive trigger button that adds palpable tension when pressed, similar to what’s found in the DualSense controller. If you’ve played a PS5 game, you’ll be familiar with the tension in the L2 or R2 buttons when you press them, such as when you’re drawing your bow to fire an arrow. When you take that kind of mechanic and apply it to VR, the experience is amplified to the next level.

  • Haptic feedback: The new controller will have haptic feedback optimized for its form factor, making every sensation in the game world more impactful, textured and nuanced. When you’re traversing through rocky desert or trading blows in melee combat, you’ll feel the difference, magnifying the extraordinary visual and audio experience that’s so central to VR.

  • Finger touch detection: The controller can detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers. This enables you to make more natural gestures with your hands during gameplay.

  • Tracking: The VR controller is tracked by the new VR headset through a tracking ring across the bottom of the controller.

  • Action buttons / analog sticks: The Left controller contains one analog stick, the triangle and square buttons, a “grip” button (L1), trigger button (L2) and Create button. The Right controller contains one analog stick, the cross and circle buttons, a “grip” button (R1), trigger button (R2) and Options button. The “grip” button can be used to pick up in-game objects, as one example.

Prototypes out soon!

Development teams will get their hands on this new orb-style PS VR controller very soon. This means that we are sure to learn more about this VR controller in 2021, once devs have begun experimenting with it.

I personally think this is just what the next-gen PS VR needed. I am already sold, I have been wanting to dive into VR for so long. Everything seems to be lining up for me to do just that. If you are lucky enough to have a PS5, then it is going to be extremely difficult to pass on the new PS VR.

What about the headset?

We have still yet to see any photos of what the next-gen PS VR headset will look like. All of the images online so far are just fan creations. Looks like we just need to continue practicing patience until PlayStation decides they are ready to unleash more information.

I have a feeling the headset will match the controller's all black aesthetic. It most likely will be a whole new design, but still somewhat familiar to the current PS VR. I wouldn't be surprised if they also release an all black PS5 (perhaps a slim) to match the new PS VR whenever it launches. I'm guessing holiday 2022, hopefully not much later than that.

Are you excited?

Whether or not you are a console or PC gamer, I am assuming this announcement has your attention. People such as myself who have zero experience with virtual reality are also starting to perk up to the idea of VR. This very well may be the generation where we see VR become as popular as regular video games. PlayStation also could take the crown as the top choice for VR. It is only a matter of time before VR becomes the preferred method of gaming, much like in the book/movie Ready Player One.

In my eyes, PlayStation keeps finding more ways to stand out as the console of choice. I have faith in them to give us something absolutely irresistible. I seriously cannot wait to learn more about the future of PS5's VR offering.

This has really caught my attention without a doubt, this could be the stepping stone to create vrrmos as well, I wanted Sword Art Online kind of game to happen in real life tho 🤣

We are going to have so many next level games released into the VR world over the coming years. It's probably best to get used to playing that way early so they put skills will be primed for the mmos of the VR world.

Actually look rather comfy to work with. Battery life has always been a huge issue for VRs so I'm curious how these pan out.

I agree, ergonomics are essential to enjoying VR long term. I like how this design looks, can't wait to feel it in my hands.

I hope battery life is something they succeed with. I at least feel confident that they will use Type-C for charging. This reduces charge time tremendously. I’ve already been loving it for my DualSense and Pulse 3D headset.

Every gamer's dream. I like the design, more and more things are being made that I only saw in science fiction movies. Virtual reality will be a very lucrative business for the video game industry, although there is also another industry that is perfect to exploit virtual reality. I hope to live long enough to see how far we will go with the technology.

I think I can guess what other industry you are talking about 😜

I think the problem that is going to arise with this peripheral just like the VR on the PS4 is the really high price. There is very little chance that I am going to get involved with an addon that costs more than the system you use it on, which was the case with the PS4 VR anyway.

Price is a major concern. They're going to have to find a way to bridge the gap between top level VR tech and affordability. If they can keep all peripherals needed under $300 I think they've really got a chance at gaining mass adoption. Of course people will still have to cough up $400 (digital) or $500 (disc) for an actual PS5.
