Howdy Gamers.

Over the weekend I had my 7 year old nephew staying with me.Everytime he stays here we try to find some new games we can play together.

This week we picked up Cobra Kai -The Karate Kid Saga Continues and Lego DC Super Villains.

We have played quite a bit of both titles over the weekend and I figured I would make a post for them starting with Cobra Kai.

Cobra Kai is a side scrolling beat em up based on the TV show. For anyone that doesnt know about the show ,bassically it is a continuation of the story from the movie The Karate Kid set 34 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament.

The show stars Ralph Macchio as Daniel Larusso the original Karate Kid who now in his 50's owns the most successful car dealership in the San Fernando Valley .

His old high school rival Johnny "Sweep The Leg" Lawrence played by William Zebka plays a alcoholic ,down on his luck construction worker.

Johnny gets fired from his construction job and after witnessing some bullies beat up his 16 year old neighbour Miguel he decides to reopen the infamous Cobra Kai Karate Dojo and bring Karate back to the Valley.

Now in its third season with a total of 6 seasons planned the show is a huge success and is highly entertaining.I have watched every episode a few times now and would recommend checking it out if you haven't already.

I think they did a great job appealing to peoples sense of nostalgia for all things 1980s while bringing the story into the modern era and keeping it fresh, exciting and highly entertaining.

Never underestimate the power of 80's nostalgia.....Cobra Kai Never Dies!

The show is perfect for turning into a video game and I honestly think they have done a great job with this title.

In this video we cover the first 4 stages of the game ending with a boss fight in Larusso Auto's show room.Along the way we cover the combo system, special moves and leveling up your character in the Dojo.

So let's dive right in...

In the intro cutscene Hawk and Demetri are arguing in the principal's office at West Valley High School..

Snapshot_731.png
"Boys,stop.I said stop! STOP!"

Snapshot_732.png
"All I hear are crazy rumors of brawls with flaming punches and freezing kicks.Absolute nonsense, right?"

Snapshot_733.png
"But I get to school and what do I find?Complete chaos-with you two beating each other over it!"

Snapshot_734.png
"But it's all true,Mr,Lopez! Well, not everything because Eli here keeps bending the facts. He's been brainwashed ever since joining Cobra Kai."

Snapshot_735.png
"Shut up,Miyagi-nerd.Do you want another fist to the nose?"

Snapshot_736.png
"Enough!Look,unless you're looking for a suspension,stop yelling,stop fighting and start making sense."

Snapshot_737.png
"Now from the beginning"

At this point we get to choose which Dojo we want to play as either Cobra Kai or Miyagi Do

Snapshot_739.png

Over the weekend we did the first few stages of Cobra Kai's storyline. My nephew thought the fire attacks would be cooler so we went Cobra Kai.

For the video above I wanted to see how Miyagi dos more defensive Ice style compared.

It's worth mentioning that when starting a new game we got his message telling us we need to complete the game with both Dojo's on the same save file to get the real ending and true final boss....I'm putting it on my gaming bucket list to achieve this goal...

Snapshot_740.png

No matter which dojo we choose our story begins at the Mini Golf Arcade...

The Mini Golf Arcade is the first stage and is pretty simple to complete but the game does get much more challenging in the next few stages. In this stage we learn the basics of combat.
Snapshot_759.png

Snapshot_760.png

Blocking and countering is really important in the stages that follow this one so its a good idea to get the timing down in this first stage. When an enemy glows red they are invincible for a short minute, this is telegraphing an incoming attack which can be blocked and countered...

Snapshot_764.png

Snapshot_765.png

Countering these attacks lets you use the opponent as a weapon and deal with them quickly. When facing 3 or more opponents its a good idea to try and use this strategy to get rid of at least one or 2 opponents as quickly as possible...

Stacking up combos are a big part of this game and I found it easier to get higher ranking combos with Sam Larusso the first character we meet on the Miyagi Do story. When her skills are upgraded at the dojo she fights like a cross between Subzero from Mortal Kombat and Chun Li from Street Fighter!

On the first time playing the game I wondered why even when we get 30-40 hit combos I was only achieving Rank D.

It turns out you gotta break the 50 hit combo mark to get a C , B or NM (No Mercy!)rank. The rank is based on attack variety and chaining regular punches and kicks with special moves.

Here are 2 examples of the best combo chains I have managed to pull of so far.The first time I got a B rank was with this 67 hit combo...

I managed to pull of my first No Mercy 79 hit combo during the Larusso Autos showroom stage...

So we have seen Sam Larusso's combat skills lets take a quick look at her dad Daniel Larusso the 1984 All Valley Karate Champions skills...

The combo system and the cool looking special moves make this game pretty addictive. We also have a pretty deep skill tree system which is accessed from the Dojo.As we progress through each stage we earn tokens from defeating enemies, higher ranked combos earns us more tokens to spend in the dojo.

Snapshot_791.png

Snapshot_792.png

Each Character has there own skill tree and you can choose which of the skills you want to improve...

So to conclude I really enjoy this game and I plan to play it all the way to completion with both Dojo's.I will likely make a few more posts as I progress through the game.

My 7 year old nephew loves it to and he can manage to pull of special moves and combos and gets better at it the more plays.

This is one of the best side scrolling beat em ups I have played, its easy to get into and the combo and upgrade system makes you want to keep playing until you are a Karate kicking No mercy comboing badass.

If you haven't watched the Cobra Kai show I would highly recommend checking it out before playing the game. It's an 80's nostalgia filled Karate kicking good time.

Its a 9/10 for the game and the show from me.
