Greetings, Hive! Today’s The Legend of Zelda's review it’s about a game that in its announcement and subsequent release was widely criticized for its visual style, as this game took a very different artistic direction to which the saga had us accustomed, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Game criticized for its "childish" and "colorful" visual style, that many people didn’t of play just for this, missing out on (in my opinion) one of the best games in the series and even in history.

So, without any further ado, let's start!

In 1999, Nintendo showed the world their new console in development: the Nintendo Game Cube, this presentation took place in an event known as Spaceworld 2000. Here, they showed the different graphic capabilities that the new console would have with demonstrations of iconic Nintendo games, and obviously The Legend of Zelda was not left out of this.

In a short presentation of just a few seconds, we were shown a fight between Link and Ganondorf in a "realistic" and "serious" style, this created a huge expectation of what the next The Legend of Zelda would for the new Nintendo console be. However, in 2001 the new title of the franchise was officially revealed: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and to the surprise (and displeasure) of the fans, what they saw was completely different from what they expected.

What they saw was a cartoonish style, very different from the serious tone that had been presented in Spaceworld 2000. The game was released on December 13, 2002 in Japan, and on March 24 for America.

It caused a huge controversy at the time and was reason enough for it to be labeled as a bad game by many without even playing it. And the truth is that they couldn’t be further from reality, The Wind Waker brought us one of the most memorable adventures in the franchise and videogames history, an extremely enjoyable and cared delivery in each of its aspects. In 2013 an HD version was released for the Nintendo Wii U, it improved the already beautiful game’s graphics and corrected some things regarding the rhythm of the gameplay.

divisorww-removebg-preview.png

This installment retains the established gameplay basics of three-dimensional Zelda, dedicated buttons for attack and cover, assignment of items to the X and Y buttons, dungeon structure to advance the plot, interaction with NPCs (non-playable characters) that is rewarded with various items that help us in our adventure, collecting heart pieces to increase our life total, etc.

The Grappling Hook. source

Thanks to the technical capabilities of the Game Cube, Link's control feels more fluid than ever. In the objects we have the classics, like the bombs or the bow and arrow, and I highlight two new ones that are implemented very well to the adventure: the Grappling Hook and the Deku Leaf. When using the Grappling Hook Link will hold on to something, swings as if it was a vine, in combat we can use it to steal items from enemies. The Deku Leaf allows us to glide in the air to cross distances where there is no ground path.

The biggest change that Wind Waker brings is that it no longer takes place on land, but throughout the game (or at least during the vast majority) we will travel by boat on the Great Sea, which as you read... It is a very, very large sea, which we can explore with great freedom from the first moment we have the boat, the sail, and the Wind Waker, a baton that allows us to direct the direction of the wind, transport us through tornadoes, and a couple of other things.

Wind_Waker.png

The Wind Waker. source

In this sense, Wind Waker offers a freedom of exploration not seen since the first installment of the franchise for the NES. This sea is divided into 49 segments, each one with its own island/islet/archipelago ready to be discovered and explored. Whenever we are aboard the King of the Red Lions, we will be accompanied by music that sets the mood of the adventure and really makes us feel like we are sailing on the sea, with the sound of the waves breaking and the seagulls flying around us.

mar2.gif

Sailing through the sea. source

Something that this game suffered in its Game Cube version, is that exploring the sea could become tedious because we constantly had to be changing the wind direction with the Wind Waker, and this was a very time consuming process between selecting the Wind Waker, directing the song and watching the small cinematic of the wind direction change, besides the speed of the boat in the water wasn’t the fastest, making the navigation feel slower than it should.

islas.jpg

The Great Sea locations. source

This is especially noticeable towards the end of the game, when we are on the quest for the Triforce fragments and it is almost mandatory that we explore the entire sea. That added to deciphering the maps of the Triforce (to decipher each map you need a fairly high amount of rupees, and there are 8 maps...) makes this last segment of the game is definitely the most negative of the game. Apart from the fact that it cuts a lot of rhythm in relation to what is happening narratively. However, the sea is full of interesting things to discover, we will encounter giant squids, fairies, shipwrecks, and even a ghost ship.

Nintendo Wii U’s edition corrects this problem with wind direction and boat speed by adding a special sail that makes us sail faster and changing the wind direction constantly towards the direction we are moving.

divisorww-removebg-preview.png

One of the most criticized things about this game, its visual design, is one of my favorites. The game is full of charisma everywhere, Link is more expressive than ever and we can tell how he feels just by looking at his expressions, and likewise the world around him, everything feels alive and full of color, each character conveys their emotions very well and quite funny situations are created because of this. Outside the characters, the world is beautiful, the colors are vibrant and even today even Game Cube’s version still looks great. Not to mention the HD version for the Nintendo Wii U.

gracioso2.gif

divisorww-removebg-preview.png

Something very characteristic to The Legend of Zelda franchise is its music, it has accustomed us to give us sound moments of the highest quality and The Wind Waker is no exception to this rule. Each song we hear maintains that tone of adventure on the high seas and they are themes that although they don’t have the same feeling of medieval adventure-epic, they adapt very well to the narrative of the game and work excellently by themselves. One of my favorite themes are the Molgera boss fight and the Great Sea theme.

Story

The story of the Hero of Time. source

Story related this game presents something very interesting: After defeating Ganon in Ocarina of Time, Link was returned to his time to live the childhood that was denied to him.

Artwork_de_Tetra_TWW.png

Tetra/Princess Zelda. source

The people of Hyrule celebrated this victory and the Hero of Time would remain as the savior who would come when their help was needed. Sometime after this, Ganon was released from his prison in the Sacred Realm and began to attack Hyrule, everyone waited for the return of the Hero of Time... But he never came. Desperate, the inhabitants of the kingdom had no choice but to turn to the Triforce to stop the evil Ganon. The Triforce flooded the entire kingdom of Hyrule and Ganon along with it, thus putting an end to his attack and leaving Hyrule behind to give way to the place where the events of this new adventure take place, the Great Sea.

100 years after this, is where the story of Wind Waker begins, the story of the Hero of Time and his exploits are passed down from generation to generation almost like a myth. We see how Link and Princess Zelda (Tetra) are simple children who have nothing to do with the conflicts of the past, and despite this they have to travel the same path as their ancestors in order to put an end to Ganon and his desire to rule over everything.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is a game that suffered unfairly living under comparisons with its predecessors, and was judged by its graphic aspect, branding it as childish, this led to the game had very few sales in America and Japan and almost being the last installment of the saga. Unfortunately it had some pacing problems that prevent it from being a perfect game, however, it took up and improved the sense of adventure and exploration, my personal number 3 in my top 3 of The Legend of Zelda games and one of the best games created to date. A gem that any video game fan should enjoy at least once.

¡Saludos, Hive! The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

gracioso2.gif

divisorww-removebg-preview.png

Artwork_de_Tetra_TWW.png

Tetra/Princesa Zelda. fuente

divisorww-removebg-preview.png

And that's it for today with The Wind Waker. What about you? Did you also judge this game just by its looks? Did you enjoy it as much or more than the previous installments?

PD: Buen post amigo!

I've always wanted to play this Zelda, and I've heard that riding the boat can be a bit tedious, what do you think of that?

It's crazy to me that Wind Wakers artstyle was criticized. It looks so awesome! I played it to death as a kid although I never finished it. This is THE game I hope they one day release for the Nintendo Switch. They can put it up for $1000 if they want to, I'll still but it.

The exploration is a little tedious as you mention. I didn't really mind as a kid though. I had all the time in the world and no stress of adult like looming over me. Nothing was a problem.

I believe that this artstyle was criticized because the game went out in an era where everybody wanted more and more realistic visuals, the world was really hyped about the new generation of consoles (the Playstation 2, the Dreamcast, I think the original Xbox was around that time too) and they were expecting Ocarina of Time 2.0.

Btw I think that the Nintendo Wii U version of the game was released on the Nintendo Switch, but I'm not sure.

Espero que puedas retomarlo pronto! No te vas a arrepentir. :D
