Do you even (safe) lift bro?

avatar

I've been weight lifting today, but not your conventional gym-session lifting...Safe lifting!

Today I engaged the help, and muscles, of two of my buddies to assist in moving my new safe into my workshop and it was heavy work!

Lifting it into my trailer, then out again and moving into place in my workshop required a lot of man-handling and ingenuity plus a couple of rolling platforms and pry-bars...But it's in place now. (It was a bit of a mission to be honest, but we were victorious.)

With all of that lifting and shoving you'd think the safe was massive but it's actually not. I bought it for handgun storage as my other safe was getting a little full and the safe itself only stands about a metre high and just over 55cm wide...So not huge, certainly nowhere near as large as my rifle safes. Small but bloody heavy!

I'm pretty pleased with it as I picked it up second hand from a friend and paid a third of the retail price I would have paid at a shop so I'm feeling like a winner. It's in pristine condition too. Score!

Anyway, it's in now and is already full.

Whilst my buddies were here we were chatting about security and one suggested a motion sensor and screamer alarm for my workshop.

I poo poo'd the idea because of the cost and he told me how much he set his own up for and that raised my interest level as it was much cheaper than I had expected.

Here in Australia gun storage is regulated depending on the number and category of firearms a person, or business holds. I have rifles, shotguns and handguns so am required to have a particular class of safe, over a certain weight or fixed to the building. The class of safe relates to the gauge of steel, locking mechanisms, pry-proof recessed doors etc.

My gun storage is already compliant of course but it seems for under $150 I can add a motion sensor and screamer to my workshop and enjoy that additional level of security. I'm in!

I'll be honest, if someone wanted what was in my safes they would get it, screamer alarm or not, however having that additional layer of security will increase my compliance with the firearms branch and will probably make my insurer happier too.

I'm on the hunt for the bits now and hope to have something up and running within a few weeks...

...Now to rest my weary muscles...Safe lifting is hard work! (Bro).

As I'm from the Netherlands, the whole notion of individual gun ownership seems pretty strange to me. I hope you're not the guy who shoots first and asks questions later.

What if I said, I shoot whilst asking questions? Lol.

There's a few countries around the world in which the populace is unarmed, or heavily regulated. It happened here a while back after a 34 person massacre at Port Arthur...Guns were more regulated, hence the gun safe scenario. I think it's not a bad thing if administered the right way.

So, over your way...Just the government have the guns?

Government and criminals. Sometimes those are the same persons. :)

But for real, in the Netherlands you can request a license for sport- or hunting purposes. On a population of 17M, there's less than 75,000 people with such a license.

Oh wow, that's small numbers, 75K. We have a population of 26 million and over 850,000 registered gun owners.

(I like your government/criminal comment...It's correct too!)

This below was going to be my reply..

“Gun safe? Here in merica you put the gun in the kids room so criminals don’t look there.”

But I decided not to reply with that because of the immutable nature of the blockchain. Although we are in the backwater of the internet and this comment will hardly be read I could imagine some idiot finding and being all...”omg this dude? Says to keep guns in your kids room!” And it goes viral because morons don’t get jokes.

Plus I figure some idiot out there prolly did it and ended up loosing their kid and that dude could be the one to find this post. That’s a few of the reasons I decided against posting it.

Sad really, because if nothing else it was going to make me chuckle inside as I posted it like an immature child, but now that’s ruined. I had no inner chuckle while posting this.

Yeah, that's one way to go...But not here in Aus.

Back a while a farmer had his (loaded) shotgun on the gun rack in the back window if his truck. Locked his keys in the car and the kid was in there. As he was trying to get the truck open the kid was messing around with the gun (on the rack)...Pulled the trigger and blew his dad's guts all over the place. Killed him. The kid was 3 years old.

Obviously I have guns, a lot of them, and I also have a sense of humour, but many don't get it when people joke about guns...I suppose there's good reason. If I make a joke, I make sure I'm in the sort of company that will accept it for what it is. The blockchain probably isn't that place I guess.

So...Good thing you didn't make the comment huh? Lol.

(Anti-gun people don't respond well to gun jokes...They're a bit like vegans in that way.) 🤣

Yea they are not to be disrespected that’s for sure. Best believe anything that can happen with em will and treat them accordingly. Prolly one of the few things in life I take serious.

With my damaged sense of humor I’m having a hard time not posting a series called “the upside of covid19”. It’s why I don’t write much, my mind always offends me let alone other people lol

Bwahaha...You should totally do that post series...Might lighten the mood...But then again, someone will take offence.

I'm already offended just by the idea of a series about the upside of such a serious thing as a virus.

I carried a safe about a year ago and hurt myself in the process because I am too pigheaded to ask for help when i definitely need it. However, the fact that I did actually succeed in moving it encouraged me to bolt it to the floor in the new location :)

Yeah, I wasn't game to carry it myself. All my safes are over 150kg in weight, some are over 280kg! I buy them that heavy so I am not required to bolt them in. There was no way I was moving this one by myself. It was a little nugget of a thing, squat and heavy. I'll be honest, my scoliosis-plagued back is suffering this morning.

I hope you're well.

@momone and I were talking today about putting some kind of security system into our new place, not for guns, just every day things. Living in an apartment building means not really having to worry about these things normally.

A decent safe is good for many things. Documents, metals, passports, jewellery, watches, whatever needs to be kept secure obviously. I think you'll have a good area for it too, concrete lined and all. A good fire-proof gun safe will work.

I was thinking about putting one into the concrete when we redo the basement, but might not be worth the hassle since we have nothing of value to put in it. What we will likely put in is a a camera and motion sensor or two.

A safe will come in handy though...Even if it's just for paperwork. I'd suggest a safe bolted to the concrete as you will be able to move it in the future if required. It doesn't have to be huge. The camera is a good idea too. Ring do some good ones. https://au-en.ring.com/pages/security-cameras

Will You have a conversation with @janton for Me....

He keeps pickin' on Me.

He is a big meanie... Lol

Juss kiddin' I love our back and forth comments on here. Conversing with You fellas is the one and only reason I still get on here. Well that and Your great day to day stuff. Ok... A few Kitty peeps too....

Anyways, I was asking him also what in thee sam hell is goin on with Ned sold Steemit.? Who is this Justin guy that bought it and what is TRON..?? what do You think the future holds in store for this platform...?

Here is a video by @scottcbusiness about it. https://esteem.app/hive-196037/@scottcbusiness/wvpmx8pt864

I'll give him a good stern talking to! Lol.

Hmm, the Ned and Justing thing...Yeah, Justin bought a pile of steem from Ned and now owns steemit Inc. or some such thing. ned is many millions of dollars richer and not a lot of information is being shared with us...The same old story repeated by companies all over the world.

What does the future hold? I'm not sure. All I know is that I'll keep blogging until I don't and see what happens. Steem may be worthless in the future, or very valuable...I haven't got enough noggin-power to work out which, and I think anything you read or hear about it will be pure speculation, until it actually happens.

I'm still hopeful it works. I have had a powerdown going for a week, today is the second week and I'll end it today also. I'm taking a little steem out with the hopes of selling it (up) and then re-buying it (down) to create a little more of it considering I don't have the funds to simply purchase some right now. I'll throw it all back into steemit in the not too distant future and hope the exercise gains me a little extra. I think accumulating steem is still the way to go, at least for now and whilst the price is down it could be a good time to buy a little - I just don't have the funds.

Anyway, it would be good to see you come back and post a bit more. Not just you, but loads of others. At the end of the day, that's what we need.

Great info.....

I also thought @janton Jonboy summed it up prettty good.....

He said...: "Well no one knows if Steemit has a future. Steem probably does though but from the countless posts I've read about Mr. Sun, the bottom line is that no one knows what he'll do because he acts impulsively. Also, we're not sure if he's his own boss or answers to someone in China or to Binance who owns a controlling share of Tron.

So that question is impossible to answer and we'll just have to see what he does. He may want to merge steemit with Tron and that would be a messy, chaotic merger.

The biggest hope is that he would want to increase the value of that 70 million Steem he now owns, so you would think he'd do what had the best chance of increasing the price. It might depend on if he gets along with the Steemit people and if they don't piss him off.

He's got like a billion dollars backing him so he could crush steemit if he got pissed enough."

Well they're supposed to keep things safe right so they're pretty thick and durable thus even the tiny ones are really heavy XD

Yay for new safe and friends to help you move it! Have fun hunting down the other security bits :) I'm randomly remembering one of the boys asking how to spell "security camera" and my partner immediately informing them that they couldn't have a security camera in their cubby house XD

All good cubby houses have CCTV and security alarms right? Lol.

Yeah, I am lucky to be able to impose on a few chaps which makes things easier. There was no way Faith and I could ever have moved it by ourselves and I don't like strangers seeing the inside of my workshop so a courier was out of the question.

I'm still looking into the security thing but it's looking like it'll be easier than I ever expected. I want a motion sensor inside with a screamer inside and outside along with a blue flashing light. It shouldn't be too hard to get the bits, wiring it up might be beyond me, but I'll give it a go.

I hope you have a good weekend planned.

Long weekend this weekend (Labour Day or something) but also looks like it's going to be stormy so might be a quiet one (for everyone else, I'll be 3d-ing if we don't end up doing anything ;D). Do you have plans?

Yeah, just posted about it actually. Sister will be here, a bit of work at the gun range and some Netflix is about it. We get a long weekend next week which is cool. Yay!

For one hour up to 870°C yes.

That should do the trick. Do you know how they make them fireproof? I've never researched them.

Concrete and carbon lined I believe. That's where the weight comes from too. Plus the heavy-gauge steel.
