Why I Stack American Eagles: Gold & Silver

avatar
(Edited)

I am not a financial adviser, and this article is not meant to be a financial advise.

My articles on precious metals shares my personal opinion, experience, and some general information about precious metals stacking.

There are many types of silver available in the market, and a gazillion products and designs produced by hundreds and hundreds of mints, foundries, silversmiths and hobby silver pourers worldwide.

The most recommended coins for stacking are the sovereign minted or government-issued bullion coins.

Sovereign Minted or Government-issued Bullion Coins

are well-recognized and widely accepted. Government bullion are legal tender coins that have been minted by a country’s national mint and its purity and value is backed and guaranteed by that nation’s government.

Some of the most popular government-issued silver coins from around the world include:

  • American Silver Eagle/US Mint
  • Silver Britannia/The Royal Mint of England
  • Silver Maple Leaf/Canadian Royal Mint
  • Silver Libertad/Mexico Casa de Moneda Mint
  • Austrian Philharmonic/Austrian Mint
  • Australian Kangaroo/Perth Mint
  • Armenia Noah's Ark/silver bullion coin issued by the Central Bank of Armenia but produced at a German private mint.
There are several reasons why choosing to build one's stack on sovereign bullion coins can be advantageous. For one, there is value in the security of buying bullion that has been ensured and backed by a nation’s government. Investing in silver and gold that has received a “stamp of approval” by a government entity provides a sense of protection that justifies the extra cost to some. Secondly, it is said that legal tender coins are easier to sell down the road. In the actual event of an economic collapse, many argue that the average person will recognize sovereign coins over private rounds and bars from private mints. Seeing as their purity, weight and quality are backed by a country’s government, sovereign bullion buyers tend to feel more at ease and confident that the value of the coin they are buying can weather any future storm. Despite the fact that sovereign bullion coins typically have higher premiums over generic silver, some prefer this option when planning for the worst-case scenario. For instance, even if the price of precious metals were to suddenly plummet, one would likely still be able to sell their government-minted coins to those who collect coins and thus earn a collector’s premium. So, if all else fails, collectors or investors may still be able to earn a premium on certain well-liked coins on top of the price over spot.

I am an American and reside in the United States.

Not only are American Silver Eagles and American Gold Eagles readily available to me at comparable and reasonable premiums over spot but also the American Eagles are highly recognized worldwide and therefore very easy to liquidate at a moments notice and still guaranteed to get at least spot price for them. It has been the experience many who regularly sell their coins that the buyback price of American Eagles is always above the spot price, unlike some government-issued bullion coins.

American Eagle coins in both silver and gold are a natural choice of bullion coin for me as the foundation of my precious metals stack

Exactly, with Maple Leafs they would lend themselves as more liquid due to their Legal Tender status here in Canada when I need to deploy it's equity to use. These make up the largest proportion of my core holdings, In much lesser proportions, Britannias, Australian (Perth Mint), Mexican Libertads (that I don't have enough of), some Chinese Pandas since there is a large local population of Asians, and some American Silver Eagles as I may still Cross Border Shop for my Non-Stacking US Cousins.
Always Stacking with love in mind 🤗 💓 🌺

A thoughtful comment from you, as always sis @kerrislravenhiil. I think that you are a prudent stacker who is always mindful of the best use of her hard-earned fiat, like myself. There is so much to learn from a seasoned stacker as yourself. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Thank you most especially for being first to visit this article and the excellent comment.

It is gratifying to exchange fiat for beautiful, real money, @stokjockey! Silver and gold that is legal tender, US COnstitutional silver which is legal tender... denominated precious metals are just more attractive to me than generic precious metals. Thank you for the comment, which to me is a reminder to stay the course. I have to focus on those three.
Have a fantastic weekend, my dear friend @stokjockey, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

Silver Eagles and Gold Eagles are perfect rounds, even for someone who lives far from US, like me.

If I resided in Canada like my sus @kerrislravenhill, I'd probably be stacking Maples, or if I resided in the UK I'd probably stacking Britannias... but for certain, I would also have American Silver Eagles!
Have a beautiful evening, my friend @ronavel, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

I find it interesting how diverse our stacking community is. There are some who only stack one of each coin/ round. There are some who only stack higher end premium bullion. Myself, I have the core stack in 10oz bars, and after that I usually just buy what is cheapest, which is usually silver dollars. In the end, no matter someone's approach is to it, still stackin that metal. Cheers Saver!

Then you would love these bars. These are bars belong to a very good friend. We sort of started stacking together, acquiring the handpours from the same community pourers and our choices of silver was very similar that we called each other soul-stackers. And then on the second year, he went towards the direction of large bars, while I stayed with ASE, US Constitutional silver and fractional gold:

The American Silver Eagle was in my very first silver order and the Gold one was in my very first gold order (about 2 weeks later). They are great coins. I'd started out just like you suggested and bought 1 each of as many of the sovereign bullion coins from around the world so that I could be familiar with all of them. Yet to this day the American ones are amongst my favourites.

You and me both, @buggedout. I recall seeing a video (in YouTube) of a table that was full of U.S. Constitutional silver, American Gold and Silver Eagles. And I think that was when I decided that I'd exchange my fiat for real money. The appeal to me of denominated silver and gold is so much greater than generic silver rounds or bars. If only I can stay focused with just stacking those three... alas, the shinies come in all sorts of designs and shapes!
Have a terrific weekend, and take care, @buggedout 🥰🌺🤙

I know several stackers from the YouTube community who are sitting on massive precious metals holdings. I am not one of those. am just a small stacker sharing her journey, because I am able to sustain my motivation to keep stacking sharing my journey. I also know that there are ore stackers who are not in social media, or who are but not show them in public. Many stackers like myself will not show our real stack.. like an unwritten rule of some sort. Hmmm... this gives me the idea of showing the few hand-poured silver previously shown in my other articles just for fun.
Take care, my friend, @bigsambucca 🥰🌺🤙

I am sure there would be a few people collecting these precious coins and at least you are doing something you like not only a hobby but of some value and yeah it would not be wise to be showing your valuable coins over the media for safety reasons.

Have a great weekend @silversaver888 😊 🎊 🍺

Yes.... "Investing in silver and gold that has received a “stamp of approval” by a government". This is a very wise foundation to your investment stack. Like you stated worst-case scenario, these are "real" U.S. silver and Gold coins!!
With Canada to the North, I'll put away a few of those worthless Maple Leaf's Lol!😇
Have a nice night my friend!😍😍😀

Yeah, ASE, Britannia, and Maples, and now the silver Krugs... all are wise choices. But there is no right or wrong in metals. Stack the way it best suits you, is what I think. This is just how I prefer to stack! Have a terrific weekend, my friend @silvertop, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

Okay, I uploaded an article on schedule for today (and I dunno why it was published like after midnight, LOL)... and the general message is "do your thing" and buying only what you like. I meant to mention you and Liz but in my haste failed to do so. I hope you and the Mrs will like it.

I totally agree with this advice. I think I have a silver "dogecoin" from way back in the day, but other than that sovereign bullion coins are what I stack. I have family members who buy "silver bars" at the flea market. I like my chances of using US silver coins to barter for something in the future over their chances with some no-name shiny bar.

Don't you just love the old silver coins : Morgans, Peace dollars, Walkers, Ben Franklins JFKs, silver quarters, Merc dimes and Roosies! And the tinkling and clinking high pitch sound of silver coins is mesmerizing!

Isn't it interesting? And any type of precious metals is good to have! In the past, almost all countries used only silver for their coins. Here in the U.S., we call them U.S. Constitutional silver. I try to get at least one dollar face value of the pre-1964 U.S. silver coins.

You are very welcome. More people have to understand that soon the paper money will be worth nothing and we will get conditions like in Zimbabwe. The only possibility we have then to buy something is with gold and silver.

You get it,👍 @missagora! You get the reason why I and many others preserve the value of their hard-earned fruits of their labors by exchanging their paper currency (which by itself has very little intrinsic value) into real money: silver and gold. You get it👍👍👍@missagra!!! Have a wonderful week ahead, my friend, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

For me the value is in the low legal tender value, as it can pass borders at the amount written on the coin.

Exactly, @djohan! I recall a long discussion in YouTube (during a live stream) on ways and means to bring quantities of silver in and out of the US. That is why gold is the best way to move value. They say that can just put several on each pocket, and declared the value of your gold at is low legal tender value. I wonder if this is still true. 🥰🌺🤙
