Saturday Memories - Lake Santomera and Murcia City (Spain)
We are going back to 2017 with this post. It was spring, while we had Easter holidays from school and work. As those free days are not enough for some longer trip, we have chosen a destination not so far away from our place of living. In some two hours, we can reach the city of Murcia (Spain) and it was exactly where we went to spend a few days.
For those days we rented out a part of a house from a really nice English couple. They lived in the other part of that house, and they were so kind that they prepared us a tasty dinner after we spent the day in this lake which was close to their place.
Lake Santomera is just 5 kilometres from the main urban nucleus of Murcia. It was built during the years of sixties to protect the city from the floods produced by the river Rambla Salada. Some twenty years later, works were carried out to channel the waters of the river Rambla de Abanilla here as well. We usually don't have a lot of rain during the year, but when it rains, it produces floods. In many places, reservoirs were made to gather that water, and not let damage the settlements. That water is used afterwards for the water supply of the nearby cities and the watering of fields.
This place is perfect for family recreation and practice of sports in contact with nature. In one hiking webpage, I found the route where we could hike. But, I messed something up, and I thought it will take us just one hour to make the whole circle around the lake.
We walked up and down the hills and valleys and in some parts there were small rivers that we could not cross. There we built small bridges of reeds and branches that we found around.
After some three hours, we were not any close to the car where we parked. We were already tired and hungry and on several occasions, we got lost. We came across a flock of sheep and asked the shepherd for directions ... but he didn't explain it to us in the best way.
We continued on our way, and we were already sure that in about half an hour we would reach our destination, to the parking lot on the dam. Somewhere in those moments, I realized that I didn't have my mobile phone in my pocket or bag. Oh no, I dropped it somewhere along the way.
My husband went back to look for it... We agreed that my son and I would continue on our way to the car and that we would meet there whenever he arrived. Luckily in about twenty minutes, he found my phone, next to the path where we had passed before. What luck, if he hadn't found it, these pictures wouldn't be here for #SaturdayMemories, organized by @olga.maslievich . I made these photos with that old LG phone.
At the dam, where we finally arrived, we saw a pigeon that had painted feathers on its wings and tail.
After that hiking day and the tasty dinner we had from our hosts, we slept as babies. The next morning, rested, we got up and after breakfast, which was again prepared by the host, we went to the center of Murcia.
The most famous landmark is the cathedral in the city centre. A lot of people were around in the square, but we also visited the interior of the cathedral. I saw a huge organ and it was great to see all the stained glass windows and statues and decorations. Unfortunately, the pictures didn't work very well due to insufficient light, so I'm not posting any photo from the inside.
Of course, we passed many other churches in the wider center. When we visit a city, I like to see those various churches with small squares and parts of the city with their parishes.
The streets in the centre are narrow, surrounded by large buildings with historic facades. There are also a lot of small squares and of course a lot of people passing by.
One monastery had a museum inside. It was explained that the monastery was actually found from a villa of Muslim tradition with a garden and patio in the middle. Here is a small model.
This was a detail from the entrance of the casino.
A beautiful building that is now used for a bank.
What a nice decoration of the roof.
Theatre Romea:
The last day of out small trip we went again to see the cathedral. We visited the city of Murcia several times after that 2017 for other reasons, but this first visit was for sightseeing of the centre.
All the photos were taken in 2017, in the city of Murcia and nearby lake, Santomera. Thank you for your time reading these memories :)

You have visited beautiful places. Enjoyed much. Really amazing photographs.
Yes, we have visited nice ones , I don't have always good photos but the memories are still here. Thanks 😊
Thank you for sharing your memories
How good that you found the phone. If, you get lost a few times then that means the lake is huge! There are so many old buildings in Murcia! And in what city do you live? 🏙️🏛️🙂
Yes, it was a big route to walk, the small paths leads to different parts of the hill, so we sometimes walked and had to go back as didn't go in right direction and so on. Also we wanted to avoid the small rivers that we had to pass, so tried to find better places to cross. It was challenging :D
We live in a small coastal town, if you look in a map try to find Altea.
Now it is clear! I like to look at maps so I think I will easily find your city. 😁
So next travel destination Spain? 🌅
:D
Don't know, don't know... 🙂
That was a lovely tour of the city of Murcia and nearby lake, Santomera. Love them old school architectural buildings and you all the colors in there especially with the rainbow Pigeon 😉
Yes, the coloured pigeon was a surprise there :)
He did really look cool i wonder if he was really in those color or someone had painted him...lol 😄
Wow, dear @mipiano. Your family is so active that they were able to make the great hike around this beautiful lake! The landscapes are fascinating. I had the experience of hiking around Lake Pisochne in Ukraine, but it is several times smaller :) And the next day you had a wonderful tour among the ancient architectures! I love it too. Organ music is my favorite! Thanks for the wonderful memories of your trip in the city Murcia and lake Santomera.
Thank you so much @olga.maslievich for your comment. Yes, this lake hiking was exhausting but so nice and still in our memories. Murcia city is also nice, but the nature was more relaxing. Now here in hive also written forever :)
Tomorrow is Saturday, which is the DAY for Saturday Memories :)))) Hopefully, I will join again tomorrow 🤗
