El ingrediente estrella de la sonrisa romana / The Secret Ingredient of the Roman Smile

Hola, almas vanidosas.
How are you doing with your dental health and aesthetics? Today I bring you a topic that I am sure you will remember when you brush your teeth, or you might even ask your dentist about it.

The Roman civilization bequeathed to us knowledge of law, beautiful architecture, and great inspiration for Hollywood movies, but luckily we didn't inherit their secret for teeth whitening.
Today, every time I see the whitening toothpaste commercial that Shakira did, with teeth as white as pearls, this Roman secret comes to mind. And the same will happen to you.

To understand why the Romans came up with this solution, you have to put yourself in their shoes—or rather, their sandals, haha. They were absolutely obsessed with their appearance, as I mentioned in my previous post, and their smile was a huge part of that.
And just like your grandma has her own homemade cleaning hacks, they also knew that certain substances did the trick. They used mixtures of crushed tree bark, salt, and burnt bone powder to clean their teeth. But bones weren’t the secret ingredient to their smile, and even though that sounds like the weirdest thing you've ever heard, the truth is... it was actually something worse.

Bien.
The magic ingredient for Roman dental care—and actually recommended by doctors—was urine! But not just any urine. If it came from what is now Spain and Portugal, it was considered top-tier because they believed it was the most potent. I'm guessing that was probably due to a different diet.

You might be wondering how on earth they figured out it worked for teeth whitening, because nobody just wakes up one day and says, "You know what? I’m going to rinse my mouth with pee."
This actually goes way back, and they simply connected the dots later on. Back then, clothes were made of wool or linen. Wool has a natural grease that repels water. At some point—by accident, just like many great discoveries—someone, even before the Romans, noticed that fabrics accidentally soaked in aged urine ended up grease-free and much whiter after a rinse. Remember, bathrooms as we know them didn’t exist back then; instead, urine was collected in specific spots. Over time, that urine broke down and produced ammonia. This ammonia is the actual bleaching agent. So, knowing that aged urine bleached fabrics, the Romans deduced it would bleach teeth too. And that’s how urine made its way into their mouths.
And… yeah, it actually worked. How about that? They literally pushed past the gross-out factor in the name of beauty. White teeth were a major status symbol; it meant you could afford more refined mixtures with myrrh or mint, aromatic tree twigs that doubled as toothbrushes, and, of course, that luxury, imported urine.

Dientes modernos / Modern teeth

I think we agree with the Romans that teeth are still an essential part of one's personal image; a nice, healthy set of teeth is synonymous with hygiene habits and self-care. A mouth fit for close conversations and for giving lots of kisses, if you ask me.
We find the method of the obsessed Romans—using urine for their dental beauty and to achieve their desired appearance—repugnant, but nowadays people are also obsessed with the look of their teeth. We can see this especially in celebrities who have perfectly straight, ultra-white teeth in no time, without ever having worn braces. And these celebrities, through their media exposure, are the ones who pass on those trends and the desire to have teeth just like them to the general public, because it becomes the beauty standard of the era.

Current trends in dental aesthetics are dental veneers made of various materials and prices, and here comes the dilemma with this trend: some people choose to go to the dentist to get these modern procedures done, where their teeth are ground down and filed—destroying natural and healthy tissue—just to put veneers on top, all for a symmetrical and perfect smile in a matter of days. In other words, it is a massive sacrifice they have to make on their teeth to achieve that perfection. There are situations where this procedure is justified, for example, on a chipped tooth, to modify the size, or to close gaps between teeth. But if it's solely for beauty, disguised as boosting self-esteem, and to avoid waiting the time it takes to wear braces… Ouch! That is mutilating teeth. Just imagining the little noise, WHIRRRRRRR!, of the drill as it goes over all the teeth to reduce their size, grinding down and removing the enamel forever, makes me think it's like a horror movie scene, hahaha—and I actually love horror!

As if this weren’t enough, the reality is that nowadays, the trend of teeth whitening is so exaggerated that it stands out, since that shade of white simply doesn't exist in natural teeth; you only have to look at a child’s first tooth, which hasn't been stained by the passage of time. Things get complicated if a good professional isn't chosen, and the consequence is that people end up paying for opaque, square, and large white veneers, losing all naturalness. As a result, they get a white smile but 'horse style,' as I call it, because the teeth look huge.
There is also the application of veneers with almost zero tooth wear; they are thinner and, of course, expensive, so a skilled professional is essential.
Even without resorting to veneers, many people get teeth whitening treatments to follow the extra-white teeth trend that looks so strange, and some professionals don't advise them correctly despite knowing what the natural color of teeth actually is. I'm not saying getting a whitening treatment is wrong, but ideally, it should look like the natural tone that belongs to your teeth.
I remember once telling my dentist, while he was fixing my tooth, that his job seemed uncomfortable to me because repairing teeth was like making tiny sculptures, but sculpting them inside the mouth. So, you know, if you want veneers, make sure to find a good tooth sculptor, haha. Remember that the Romans were obsessed with aesthetics, and that was reflected in the art of sculpture, and the dentist you go to must be just as aesthetic-minded with your little teeth.

As you can see, the obsession with the appearance of teeth hasn't changed; only the method has. In fact, nowadays, I think it has gotten out of hand. Now, let me ask you a wicked question, hahaha: Would you prefer to have crooked teeth but whitened with urine like the Romans did, yellow teeth with braces for a long time, or porcelain veneers covering intentionally mutilated teeth? Remember: vanity is eternal. I'll read your comments!
