For this blog I want to participate in the insect contest by #amazingnature https://peakd.com/hive-129253/@hive-129253/insects-of-the-world-insect-contest-june-2021-01 for the first time.

I love biodiversity and on holiday my wires are more on the insect that I don’t know or the birds. I am a huge bumble bee enthousiast and the fact they weren’t visible in Italy this bugger did the enthousiasm grow to high ends. I can’t tell anything because his silver great shield is like one of the avengers when he flew away it became black underneath.

So no more information.

This is us in Italy, at lake Como. Our favorite country to go on holiday and make memories. This year we will try to go and all vaccinated we have the trip planned for july so we will be leaving in a month.

The shield bugs (Pentatomidae), also called tree bugs, are a family of bugs. And I am not a big fan but always fascinated by them. I always think we are a 1000 times larger he must be just as freaked out as I am. In the scientific name, penta (five) refers to the number of articulations of the antennae,

but I could be wrong Ofcourse.
I did ask his name but no answer!

That first photo is such an excellent macro! Bravo for that great capture! ⭐️ Yes, these are "shield bugs" in English, and commonly known as "stink bugs" in American English. If they feel threatened (or if you squash one), they emit a very disagreeable odor. I learned several years ago that some species are beneficial, but some species will damage crops. The species known as the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug is native to Asia, but was accidentally brought here in shipments of goods and is now causing a lot of problems where I live. 😕

You certainly were up close and personal for that photo. Such clarity and brightness that you can see the coloring. Yes, we call them stink bugs.

I happen to have had a very unpleasant experience with one that will truly freak you out.

After shopping, I exited the store headed to my car. Little did I know that a stink bug was on my shoulder. It was determined to hang on while I put away my bags. Once inside the car, this little stink bugger made his presence known after I started to leave. I looked to the left to make sure there was no oncoming traffic.

THERE IT WAS..just sitting there on my shoulder. I panicked and immediately shot back into the packing lot. I jumped out the car swiping at the bug. People were staring at me. I didn't care. When I returned to the car, I realized my mistake.

My husband had to take the car for a detail and fumigation. Needless to say my hand smelled for a week.

Wow really I would have screamed if it was on me. The weird was that this is a lake and I don’t know if they are common in Italy. But it was close enough and made a great blog hahahah. In Holland I never saw this one before and did you see the black when he was gonna fly away. The boys were very intreged and me too

(Edited)

Hey there @brittandjosie .. This species is actually the "brown marmorated stink bug", also known as the "Halyomorpha halys" .. It is actually very common nowadays here in Europe and as most insects became an invasive species .. As far as I know, it is really bad for field crops and annoys quite a lot of farmers .. Globalization also reached the insect world 😁 .. So Kitty and you were right 👍
