TMNT El último Ronin post ENG.png

Four teenage mutant turtles that fight crime and live all kinds of adventures, facing different enemies and always coming out well; in short, these are the Ninja Turtles that many of us probably grew up with. A work that represents the value of family and brotherhood, but this comic takes a completely different path from that, in fact, for good, it breaks everything known about the TMNT universe and answers what would happen if three of the four brothers, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael, had a fatal outcome. The Last Ronin presents us with a grey world, in which tyranny and despair apparently reign, where the only survivor of the Ninja Turtles, burdened by the loss and ghosts of his past, will seek to avenge the death of his family and, until the end of the first of four volumes, he drags out the unknown: Who survived?

The saga of The Last Ronin features the collaboration of the original creators of TMNT, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, together with scriptwriter Tom Waltz, and the design of the brothers Esau Escorza and Isaac Escorza. It will have a total of four comics; until now only one was published, under the subtitle of Wish for death, and after more than two months of delay it came out on October 28, 2020.

The finish of the vignettes is excellent, from number one we can appreciate a combination of greys and faint colours in general, which at times are "spiced up" with a punk style (which if I had to resemble some other work I would do it with Steven Lisberger's Tron) and by themselves they give us to understand that it is not a nice story and that it will most probably not have a happy ending.

Maybe the only thing that didn't convince me was the design of the androids, who act as police and secondary antagonists, and who for some reason in a futuristic city with a wide variety of technology go around patrolling only with a katana, for the convenience of the protagonist. It is extremely complicated to get a comic strip to convey something to you, but The Last Ronin does it not once, but several times, and accompanied by a good dialogue it makes you feel, above all, sad.

But the strength of The Last Ronin: Wish for death is undoubtedly the argument, what counts and how it counts. From the title we know perfectly what the main character of the story is: a ronin, someone who has no teacher, no code, no owner. Thus, from the title we understand that the turtle, whose identity is unknown up to this point, not only lost his brothers, but also his father, Master Splinter, who raised them and taught them everything in life. From the beginning anyone will have noticed that he, in a former ninja, is sad, hurt and angry.

The ninja turtles were heroes, with a moral and ethical code, like most heroes, but no more, the ninja turtles no longer exist, there is only one turtle of which there is no trace of what it once was. Seeing how circumstances have struck the hero and led him to become, despite having a noble reason, something he hated in the past makes the story attractive from the first moment, in that sense it is similar to characters from other works (like the Superman from Injustice, but without the dictatorial attitude, until now).

While the antagonist - at the moment the weakest and most disappointing part of this adventure - tyrannically rules from the safety of his abode, what is left of the lonely turtle, this last ronin, goes on a hunt against him. As expected, everything goes wrong and on the last page, in the last box, they reveal the name of the, for better or worse, only TMNT that is still alive: Michelangelo.
