My First Knitted Project

Hey needlework friends! So a while back I remember there was a "then and now" contest, but at the time I didn't know where my "then" was, lol. Anyway, in my recent move, I found it, so I thought I'd do a little reminiscing and show y'all my very first knitted project ever!

I was 11 years old when I made this, way back in 1989. One of the teachers at my elementary school started a knitting club and a bunch of us sixth grade kids would stay after school to learn to knit.

You can see where I started off slow and careful, and then once I felt more confident I got fast and sloppy, ha ha:

And then once I realized that was a problem, I figured out how to keep things neat by the end:

This was, as I recall, done on size 8 needles (I still have them).

My most recent scarf would be Brighid's scarf, done on teeny tiny size 2 needles, hee hee:

Thanks for reading my very belated "then and now" post! 😄

I like the progress record knitted into it. Careful to sloppy to "I got this!" I used to get tighter and tighter. I couldn't keep the tension right and the tighter it got the more I forced it tighter in response. My teacher would end up doing a couple of rows up loosen it off for me. 😅

(Edited)

I struggle with tension with crochet. It takes me several tries and much frogging before I find my balance. I am used to the tension being dictated by the needles in knitting! :)

I like the Arne & Carlos approach to knitting tension - find your natural tension, then change the needle sizes (and I guess, in some cases, the yarn) to get the tension you want/need.

It's cool finding things from when you were a child. The colors are very nice!

Wait 11! You did a great job for an 11 years old. Hahaha, I can see where you started getting over confident with the scarf. I do love the colours though, they blend perfectly.
