Mysterious Mistakes in Knitted Cardigan

Do you believe me when I tell you I do not want to write about mistakes I make while crafting? Again...?

While I woke up today, I envisioned this wonderful post about a cardigan I knitted. It is a pattern from this lovely book:

Be greedy buy everything(22).jpg

I started the cardigan a long time ago, but for some weeks now I am in the mood to finish all (ok… some) of my sleeping projects. Over the last week I was so frustrated with my checkered dress, that I pulled out this half-finished cardigan and knitted on and yesterday I had all parts finished: two fronts, the back, and the sleeves. My fear that the yarn will not suffice did not come true. I painlessly got all parts knitted.

Back to this Monday’s morning. You remember, I woke up. But surprise, surprise as I looked at the two fronts of the cardigan - which I hurriedly wanted to sew together, so that I can present you a flawless knitted cardigan – the fronts did not look the same!!!! I made a mistake, again. Perhaps I should be banned from making clothes. I fear one day there will come an official looking letter on thick cream-colored paper which tells me I am expelled from the secret guild of garment-maker-enthusiasts… 😱

Design ohne Titel(9).jpg

But we are early in the morning, so I courageously tried to unravel the last rows of the second front where I made the mistakes. I accidentally had cast of all stitches at the neckline instead of distributing between neckline and shoulder. The yarn although very fluffy behaved nicely and I was able to remedy the mistake in no time (lie… I needed more than an hour because I was sweating profoundly in fright to drop stitches).

Still Monday morning I sewed the fronts to the back and (yeah, I know it’s repetitive) surprise, surprise another strange occurrence: the fronts were overlapping, meaning they are wider than the back. Big sigh. I double checked the pattern. But I did everything to the letter. No idea why this happened. But to be honest, it’s the second pattern I use from this book and the first one had also massive mistakes (which I only noticed after I was finished and checked everybody else projects on Ravelry). This time, nobody complained on Ravelry… but look at the pattern (I hold my fingers over the culprit stitch count) the back has 86 stitches and the fronts 50 each. But that’s not all, I also find the neckline tiny.

Be greedy buy everything(23).jpg

After a cup of coffee, I decided to pin the jacket together before I do something I would regret later (like trying to steek the back and insert more stitches, which I have never tried before). And oh wonder, the thingy kind of fits. Not sure if this owed to the very loose knitted fluffy yarn? Ideas my dear #needlworkmonday experts?

You can't be banned from garment makers enthusiast 😂😂😂
As long as you didn't make this for a customer who would complain about its fittings or not...

We learn daily after several mistake and I bet we don't repeat such mistakes after making them the first time.

I love your jackets and the outfit in whole.

Thankfully it was for me and not for a customer, the latter would have ben really annoying. And good you reassured me I will not get fired from the guild :-DDD But I think I wont use this pattern book anymore as it contains so many mistakes. I find this a bit sad, as the shown knitted and crocheted jackets are really lovely (but it does not help, if its not proof read/tech edited)

Please don't get kicked out of the enthusiasts, I love your posr, your work, I have a lot of fun with your narrations and I learn from them.

How nice that you were able to review patiently, I think the cardigan looks beautiful, the color gorgeous.

Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm through your work.

I hope your support will convince the guild to not fire me 🤣 ANd I am always happy I could make you smile and to learn with you together about new crafty things. The only downside is that I fear this pattern book is not good, it is translated from Swedish and I think there happened a lot of mistakes in the translation. Very sad, as there are lovely patterns inside.

No, I do not even presume to advise something 😶 To be honest, I love the way the cardigan looks on you 😍 But it's amazing that there are such inconsistencies in the book 😮 I often find that the front parts at the top overlap too much. But I am usually lazy to make patterns when knitting and knit "by eye" how it goes 😊 it is always a shame when you suddenly see that you made a mistake when knitting and you realize that everything needs to be corrected. in such cases, I feel like crying

Thank you for your compliment, I also love the color and the wool... the fit... hm we will see if I have an idea about these overlapping fronts (they overlap without a buttonband and I wanted to knit on, but then they will overlap even more... hmmm)
I would love to knit "by eye" but I am too nervous for this 😱 I so seldom knit cardigans flat, so I really need a pattern (raglan top down I can improvise). But I am a bit sad that there are so many mistakes in the book. I think it could be because it is Swedish originally and perhaps something happened during the translation or they simply did not tech edited the patterns. A shame, it has so lovely jackets inside.

I especially like green. but I would be afraid to use their recommendations: suddenly there will be errors again. yes, I had a similar situation with the front parts. I decided to thread the top of the neckline a little: to make, as it were, a little fold. in the model that I worked, it worked well

I'd consider a knitted garment for women could be larger in the front without a problem?
Congratulations, it looks good

You are right, but its not bigger as the fronts are overlapping, the neckline is kind of strange too... super small. I am not sure if this is visible on the photos. But I love the yarn and the color, so I will invent something to get this wearable :-D

(By the way: thanks ou so much for the help with the dress. Its nearly done, only the cuffs for the sleeves are missing and I hope the next one will fit even better <3)

I love this color 😃. Perhaps the front is larger for additional space for the bust. Although if I made myself one like that, I wouldn't fill it with anything.

I also fill nearly nothing :-DDDDD But sadly, the additional width is not usable for the bust, because the fronts strangely overlap. Also the neckline is so tiny... not sure if this visible on the photos. I hope I find a rescue method as I love the yarn color.

Ooh good save on the neckline! Maybe the front having more stitches is intentional for buttons? It looks good so far either way!
If it makes you feel better, the first shirt I tried to make I accidentally sewed one sleeve on inside-out, and somehow the whole shirt is ...crooked? I don't know how else to describe it. XD The second shirt I tried to sew, I DIDN'T attach anything inside out, but it still is a little bit crooked, or perhaps the problem is that I have scoliosis and so it's just that I twist around a little and if I make a shirt that is a precise fit with non-stretchy fabric (which both shirts are), it feels weird? The other error I made on the second shirt is that I made the seams so small, it started opening up on the sleeves - not that the stitches came undone but that it didn't stay folded and shut. XD I was working with very little margin and was like, eh, it'll work. LOL
So if anyone is going to get an official-looking letter on thick cream-colored paper, it's probably me. 😅

Yes, you did make me feel better 😘 SO often I see these perfect dresses and garments on instagram and I always think: wow, how are they all so talented. By the way, I also inserted a sleeve the wrong way :-DDD Perhaps we are related? Because the smallest possible seam allowance sounds also like me :-DDDD And be sure if anybody will send you this letter, I will work magic and will get up in flames before it reaches you <3
(But these overlapping fronts of my sweater are really mysterious... I think you could be right and they were planned as a button band in the original Swedish book, but got lost in translation)

I havent tried knitting any kind of clothing but in crcoheting, I often mke that mistake when there are two pieces that need to be identical. It takes a lot of patience undoing those stitches as one mistake would lead to frogging more than you need to. If people start banning on the garment makers enthusiast, I'm sure you're safe. You're too good and funny to be banned. Hehehe.

I remember that you also do not like doing two of a kind (I only say "sleeves" 🤣😱) and I totally fell into the second front trap. Honestly I had this second front finished for some time and I did not noticed that I made this mistake until Monday.... and unraveling is no fun in my opinion (even less in knitting).
I hope I get a good idea what to do with these strange overlapping fronts, as I do not want to unravel another single stitch on this cardigan...

You persisted until you succeeded, so it's a win! Victory! A new sweater! !BBH

Thank you for your encouragement. But I am not at the finish line... there is still the problem with the strange overlapping fronts and I may have not enough yarn for the neckline 😱

Just introduce an accent color in some compatible yarn. My first cardigan (knit back in 1985) was pink with a blue stripe around one sleeve. I ran out of pink yarn and there was no ebay or amazon back then for me to find more. I added some blue at the neckband so it would look like I meant to make a 2-color sweater all along. Sneaky. I wore that sweater for decades.

Hello @neumannsalva . You have an special way to write, it's Nice, funny and happy. İ think is your happy personality. Make mistakes it's okay, we can learn a Lot with them. İ think your fabric it's the same you told me that you ran out of thread to finish the sleeves. is that true? Sorry for mistakes, i am learning to write in english

Yes, that is the Cardigan I told you of. But luckily the yarn was enough for the sleeves, I even have a bit for the neckline (but I think I have to mix it with another yarn)
And yes mostly I can laugh at my mistakes or in this case the faulty pattern in the book. I hope I get an idea how to rescue the strange overlapping fronts.
And do not fear, your English is fine and I can understand you very well (but to be honest... mine is perhaps also strange as I am German :-DD)
