#needleworkmonday :: My Little Handsewn Hexy Pincushion

Happy #NeedleWorkMonday everyone!

Since reconnecting with my school days needle craft of a therapeutic English Paper Piecing hexagons, I have been happily adding on to my hexies with different fabric cuts after my last post: Needlework therapy with scrap fabric to create new fabric designs with English Paper Piecing (EPP).

More hexies meant more hexagon paper pieces were needed and I drew more hexagons to cut:

... and punched a hole into each hexagon for easier removal later.
(After @minismallholding asked what happens to the papers after we are done with joining them together, she reminded me that I would need to remove them. It is easier to remove when there is a hole on each paper piecing. Thank you @minismallholding!)

I was thinking of a project to make with these and decided to start simple and try a little pincushion after seeing some examples in Pinterest.

I arranged the pieces of fabric colours I wanted which is basically the foundation of a granny's flower garden arrangement which is one of the earlier and most common patterns for hexagon paper piecing quilts:

... and I started sewing using whipstitch following the tutorial I mentioned in my last post by Craftypod:
9.jpg

My first joint hexies, the whipstitch is quite invisible from the front and it helps when we use a thread colour that matches the pieces well, such as a light gray thread, in this case:
10.jpg

After joining the middle hexy to 6 other hexies, I started joining all the sides too with whipstitch:
11.jpg

This was how it looked like from the wrong side:
12.jpg

Then, it was time to remove the paper pieces because I needed to fold the side hexagons and join them with another middle hexy to create the pincushion:
14.jpg

The punched hole made it easier to remove the paper pieces using a pair of small scissors or tweezer or anything that we have:
13.jpg

... and because I have sewn all the sides, the hexies still maintained its shape without the paper pieces:
15.jpg

After that, I folded the side hexies and continued joining them together at the remaining sides with whipstitch:
16.jpg

... and added another center piece hexy to close the middle gap:
17.jpg

I sewed all around the side hexies to the center hexy but left 1 side unsewn so that I could turn the project inside out:
18.jpg

Slowly, I turned the project inside out and flatten it:
19.jpg
Because the hole was not big, this had to be done carefully so that it doesn't rip the stitches on both sides of the sewn sides. Maybe, I should have left a bigger gap not sewn to ease the turning inside out.

For the stuffing, I chose a cheap acrylic yarn which I do not like (this is what happens when I buy compulsively :P I end up with stuffs that we do not like later :P) but we can use anything that we have to stuff this with, such as fabric scraps too:
20.jpg

I kept on stuffing the pincushion with the yarn to a fatness that I like:
21.jpg

Once it achieved the desired fatness, I sewed the hole shut:
22.jpg

... and done!
23.jpg

This is the reverse side which can be used too if I get bored with the other side:
24.jpg

I would need to work on my stitches for a neater finish, especially one that will be stretched like this pincushion.

And now it sits happily in my box of hexies:

I am thinking that this method can also be used to make coasters with bigger hexagons, add with an interfacing of maybe felt and add some quilt stitches all around to strengthen the coaster. Something to try the next round :)

Lol! Glad I'm not the only one who's done that with yarn! I had to learn very strong self discipline not to buy yarn just because it's an irresistible price and so pretty...but I then hate the feel and quality of it.

A lovely lady at a craft group we used to attend when my girls were younger did a little lesson for them on making a pin cushion out of hexes. I'd forgotten about that until reading this.

Hehe.. yes.. STRONG self discipline is definitely needed in times like those. BUt sometimes it is sooooo hard :P
Aaah.. it is a nice first project for hexes I think, to get the hang of sewing and joining the pieces and getting to create something quick enough to feel the effort :)
Thank you @minismallholding!

FIrst: your pincushion is super cute and second: I think you are addicted to hexagons 😂😂😂 You made so many, its hardly believable. But they all look so cute when stacked together and sorted after color. And good you mentioned that one must remove the paper... I also asked me this after reading your last blog, but assumed it should stay in for stability:-D
I fear, if the lock down goes for longer you will come up with a complete outfit made out of hexagons (although.... a sweater... hmmm could look cute 😂)
Looking forward to your next post and even more hexagons 💕

I am... ADDICTED to hexies!!! Yes I am! Haha.. The problem is to move to the next step of creating something out of them. Hahaha. Ooo.. an outfit is an interesting idea. Hmmm. Hehe.. I'll think I might start with something less structure first like a mat. Hahaha. Thank you @neumannsalva :)

How lovely! I love the colors you used, they compliment each other. And I also love anything pink or lavander.
