#needleworkmonday :: Adding a little sunshine

Happy #NeedleWorkMonday everyone!

I continued my journey in exploring the fascinating world of hand sewing. One thing I have always wanted to try was flower embroidery.

I explored some video tutorials and they look pretty easy. But the challenge is sewing them neatly, can I do it, I kept asking myself.

I have a plain tote bag, my canvas to play with :)

And I found the flower I wanted to try in this video,
HAND EMBROIDERY FOR BEGINNERS: 10 Types of Flowers

I like small flowers and at the 6th minute, I found my sunshine. The embroidery uses a woven technique for the flower, stem stitch for the stem and fishbone stitch for the leaves.

I dug my stash of crosstitch thread and decided on these colours, similar to the ones in the video..
5.jpg

I took out my flexi hoop that tightens the fabric for embroidery...
4.jpg

My embroidery placement will be at the bottom left side corner of the tote bag. My design choice is always small, cute and at a corner.
6.jpg

I drew the flower pattern with a sewing pencil which can be washed away...
7.jpg

I got ready my thread and needle, starting with the yellow, orange variegated thread...
8.jpg

and the sewing began with the petals that form the foundation for the weaving process...
9.jpg

This is quite a fun bit, going round and round and round in alternating stitch...
10.jpg

until the sunshine is formed...

A little close-up...
12.jpg

Next, I moved on to the stem with stem stitch...
13.jpg
The stem stitch really helps in creating a continuous stitch of a line which gives it a neat finish...

Then, I reached the leaf... an exciting stitch of fishbone, I was asking myself if I could do it as neatly as the video...

I think it turned out alright...

I decided to add a little bit more at the base of the stem and leaf.

For this, I found another embroidery of little flowers from this video:
14 Hand Embroidery Borders for Beginners | Basic Embroidery Stitches
and at 3:41 minute, there was this flower grass looking embroidery which I like and I used that as the pattern but edited just a wee bit based on the thread that I have in hand...
18.jpg

It was really exciting to try using lazy daisy method...
19.jpg

and some french knots..
20.jpg

Not too bad? :)
21.jpg

I decided to add some light purple flowers, also using the lazy daisy sewing technique...
22.jpg

.. and we are almost done...
2.jpg

I took of the flexy hoop, flatten the tote bag a little...
24.jpg

And there you go, a little sunshine to light up the day...
25.jpg
I could do the whole bag but I like it at the little corner.

Just a little sunshine :)

I brought this project to a couple of place to work while I was waiting, which is the reason for the different lighting angles :D

Embroidery is fun. I do it on stamped designs (iron-on transfers) or do cross stitch on checked gingham.

To be honest, I at first thought you wrote this post especially for me... „exploring handsewing“ haha... But ok, I guess I have to accept that you honestly love doing this (sorry, I could not stop myself to make this pun 💕😊)
But joke aside, I love the embroidery. You are right, the size is cute and lends the bag something special. And as you know I love the finished embroidery, I only am too impatient to do it myself. Actually I have an embroidery book which I love, but I only read and admire it :-DDD
Your flex’s loop looks so nice: It seems to bee very practical and because of the wooden finish I can imagine this as a kind of frame to exhibit the embroidery. Looks much more high quality than the loops I see here.

It looks great on him. I remember years ago I was embroidering, together with my mother and grandmother. I learned the basics there. Good vibes!
