Handmade Sewing Machine Mats

Today I'd like to show you what I've been working on during the week. As I said before, diversity is key no matter what we're talking about. I've been making bags for the last two months or so, and now I needed to do something else, sewing machine mats looked like a good idea. So far I have fine, including the one I'm going to show the sewing process for today.

All of my sewing machine mats are made or used fabric, most of the time jeans, denim as that's what I'm working with and like very much. It's my way of using every piece of the jeans, giving them a second life. Plus the lining and lately the non lip rubberized mat that is stopping the sewing machine from slipping, plus reduces the noise. That is also reusing or better yet repurposing. We got a huge size carpet from a friend from abroad and this rubberized material was inside the carpet, to stop the carpet from slipping. As the carpet was huge, the mat is huge as well. I've been using it here and there, where I could but there's still plenty, so why not use it for these mats. I've seen on Etsy, where my products are listed, there are pedal mats available made of this kind of rubber mat.

Planning

The fabric you see is from an old pair of trousers, jeans like fabric. It's blue but unfortunately the camera is cheating, the flashlight is changing the colors. Had usable pockets, which is great for me as all my mats have pockets. To make it more interesting, I'm using different labels from shirts, jeans, whatever I can find. This is useful as you don't have to throw them away, it makes the pocket more colorful and interesting and if you have some spots to hide due to various reasons, this is the perfect way to do it.

Executing

Sewing these tiny little labels to the pocket is a huge challenge. It's a hard job and sometimes things don't go my way. However, I have a little experience now and I believe these are acceptable.

Thank you 😊 that's the main idea, repurposing what is not needed it can't be used anymore. I've got a bunch of bags full of used trousers, I mean with holes, thorn and so on.
Why throw them away when I can give them a second life, right? 😉

Interesting and useful product! I have never heard of these mats, but they are a handy idea to store pins or scissors. here people often make sewing machine covers, for transporting them or for keeping them clean, but these mats are really new to me.
I think it is a good idea to have different products in your shop, especially if you can use up fabric, which you could not use for something else (like a bag). Are you also making smaller items? Purses or for example tool purses /roll ups for knitting needles or crochet hooks? I think I have seen that they are sold often?

I find them useful, have one that I'm using on a daily basis, actually can't work without it. Before I was using a used pillowcase to protect the table and reduce the noise but this is way better.

I know those covers and gave seen them on Etsy but the problem with those is that each sewing machine is different and you don't know which one people are looking for.

For now I only have two granny square, Afghan blankets listed for sale, denim bags and sewing mats. I'm going to diversify my products but don't know what's next yet. You know how it is, you see something and cones the desire to do it.

Purses are tempting but I'm not there yet. Those are small and need more experience. I have one half finished, my very first word with my sewing machine. Maybe it's time to finish it.

Roll ups is a good idea but I don't know how much people are buying.

Anyway, I'm open to suggestions, to new ideas 🙂

Hi there! Lot of stuffs you have! We're on the same boat! I like to make side pockets for multiple usage too. That way, you can easily look for those little things you need when you needed them

Oo yes, a sewing machine mat is such a good idea! I was just thinking of sewing one for myself. My stuffs are everywhere on the table and it would be good to be able to have a mat like this handy, ready to grab the pair of scissors or the thread or whatever tools that we use. But I will need more pockets and compartments :D I like that you add the rubberized "fabric" at the bottom. I was just thinking of using the sewing machine to hold on to the mat but the rubberized part makes more sense. It is so cool that you have second hand shops to be able to buy the denim for so many uses. I love denim too!
I agree too that diversity matters to add colour and flavour to the list of things that we sew :)

See? That's the problem, my stuff were also all over the place and as the place is super small, I needed something to help me organize my things. I saw a mat like this online and could not get it out of my head, so I made one for myself.
About the pockets and compartments, I know you would need more but as the mat can't be 1 mile long (lack of space) you can only have a few. I settled for 3 as that's how many fits. Plus it is not comfortable if the mat is too long due to the pockets.
You're right, I'm lucky to have this shop, when everything is on sale, once a week, I can buy everything for like $0.20 each. One cannot ask for more I guess. It's almost for free.
On these days I raid the shop and clean the shelves. 10 jeans, 10 shirts 😁 The woman must have figured out by now that I'm using these for something, other than wearing them 😜 Today I need to finish another two and list them on Etsy.
