This hatchery is located in the state of Apure, specifically in the Marisela Agroecological Socialist Livestock Company, Inc., which is located in Hato El Frío. A cachama farm also works here, which I showed in my previous post, click here if you want to read: (https://hive.blog/hive-123046/@sofathana/eng-esp-black-pacu-breeding-knowing-an-alternative-project-in-apure-venezuela-cria-de-cachamas-conociendo-un-proyecto).

This caiman that lives in the Orinoco river basin in Venezuela and Colombia, has been in danger of extinction for many years due to its exploitation both for its skin and for its meat and eggs. In Venezuela its hunting was prohibited in the late 1960s and in the 70s some initiatives began to recover its population.

I visited this breeding farm where arrau (Podocnemis expansa) and terecay (Podocnemis unifilis) turtles also breed and they explained to me what the process was like to try to increase the number of specimens in their natural habitat.

There they have circular tanks that are fenced and covered with mesh where the baby caimans are placed until they reach one year of age and have the appropriate size, to be released and not fall prey to predators, that is about 75 cm long.

These tanks are cleaned daily as there are fed the newborns with a mixture of beef, fish, minerals and vitamins. They are measured monthly to keep track of their growth.

The Orinoco caiman is the second largest crocodile in the world, it can reach 7 meters in length. It was very exciting for me to get to know this conservation program up close and to be able to hold a baby specimen of this reptile in my hands, they are so soft!

As for the reproduction of the turtles, there are also tanks where the specimens are raised until they reach at least 12 cm. The eggs are collected between February and March each year in the surroundings of the farm and then they are incubated in the hatchery for about 60 days until they hatch.

Then we went to another area of Hato El Frío, which has 63 thousand hectares, to see the nests of the Orinoco caimans up close.

Due to its ecological value, this area is protected by the Venezuelan State since there is a lot of fauna and some species in danger of extinction like the ones that reproduce with this program.

We arrive at a beach area on the river, that is to say, a sandy area, since that is where the females lay their eggs when it is dry season, from December to March and the waters are low.

Here, the people who work in this breeding program collect the eggs to take them to hatcheries where they are incubated for approximately 60 days.

They explained to me that the number of eggs that the female caiman lays varies, they can be 20, 40, 60 and even more. When they are born, they measure on average about 28 cm. In their natural habitat, mothers take care of them during their first year of life.

The Orinoco Cayman Conservation Program in Venezuela was initiated by the Venezuelan State in 1990 and involves non-governmental organizations, organized communities, universities and field producers from nearby areas. It seeks not only to increase the population of these reptiles but also to maintain their natural habitats and raise awareness of their importance.

In addition to this hatchery that I visited in Apure, there are five more in the country, located in the states of Guárico, Portuguesa, Aragua and Amazonas. Since 1990, more than 10,000 Orinoco caimans have been released in Venezuela.

For the ecosystem it is vital that the Orinoco caimans continue to exist, they contribute to the balance by consuming fish such as piranhas which are large predators of the larvae of other fish that people consume, that is, they are very important within the food chain. They also eat snails, which are disease carriers for livestock and humans.

After learning about the extraordinary work they do in this place to try to save the Orinoco caiman from extinction, we enjoyed the beautiful landscape of the Venezuelan plains.
