Rocky the Raccoon

Overtime I have had many different birds, foxes, skunks, squirrels, chipmunks and sometimes stray cats visiting my back yard. During the winter a mother raccoon and her baby would check out the back yard in the evening to see if any food left. In the deep snow in winter it would be difficult for them to find food and I like to help them out.

Unfortunately the mother has been killed on the road as I saw a raccoon corpse on the roadside and since then the baby, who I call Rocky, comes by solo each evening. How do I know it’s him? They all have the bandit look across the eyes and the ringed bushy tail but Rocky had quite a bit of white on his fur so I could pick him out.

The raccoon is a medium sized mammal native to North America and can weigh 14 to 25 lbs.

Scientific Facts
lifespan: 2 – 3 years (In the wild) and sometimes 20 years in captivity.

Diet
The raccoon is an omnivorous and opportunistic eater, with its diet determined heavily by its environment. Common foods include fruits, plants, nuts, berries, insects, rodents, frogs, eggs, and crayfish. In urban environments, the animal often sifts through garbage for food. The majority of its diet consists of invertebrates and plant foods.

Rocky has grown to full size since the winter. I leave him a peanut butter sandwich and some cat food. He comes by about 8 O’clock each evening for a picnic on the grass.

I’m always amazed how the raccoon uses his little hands to eat with much like a human. Those little paws of his can open large outside garbage cans and dig their way into mischief. They are known to survive in cities by eating anything from garbage cans but they prefer the forest like here with a stream so they have water.

Here he is waiting under a chair by the barn to see if I am going to leave some food outside on the grass for him.

Raccoons are not dangerous to humans unless they had rabies then I don’t know what they would do. Rocky is still afraid of me and that is fine. Raccoons have been a nuisance to some folks as they are known to get into chimneys and attics of houses but he heads for the woods each evening.

Rocky is looking up at the Blue Jay. He knows the birds will eat his food if he doesn’t get there soon enough.

Most people will say they do not want raccoons around as they get into the garbage but Rocky is an orphan and I like to help him out at least until the berries become plentiful. People have been known to set dogs on the raccoon and chase him up a tree where the person will then shot the raccoon. I think this would be terrible as animals have a right to live on this planet too.

I've always liked raccoons, ever since I was a boy. They certainly do have a nuisance reputation about them, probably because when they are in inhabited environments they do scrounge for food - they need to find it from somewhere! I suspect if they could talk they'd find us just as much of a nuisance.

Hi WW @wwwiebe. I like them too. I think they get a bum rap but they need to find food.

Sneaky mischievous animals, but so cute nevertheless! 😁😁

Yes they can get into things especially if they smell food... those little paws act just like hands.

Thanks for stopping by @pardinus 🌺

At first I thought Peppy was back 😃

But Rocky looks cute and because he's young he will learn from you how to behave to get good food, I believe.
I would love it it we had raccoons around. They look cute and I like them

You say, animals have a right to live on this planet too and I say, they have even more rights to live here than we have, because they don't destroy their home.

Nice photos and much interesting information, Jo, I think you'll have a lot of fun with this little guy in future :)

What a coincidence: your post was about a "Rocky" and @tattoodjay was posting about a photoshoot with "Rocko" the dog today 😁

Hi Hannes,😊

I’m happy you found my writeup about Rocky interesting dear Hannes. It’s nice to see cute little Rocky making his evening visits. @sketch.and.jam thinks he’s North America’s version of a panda. I though that was a good analogy.

Yes it seems @tattoodjay and I were on a rocky/rocko theme with our posts. :)

Thanks so much for the reblog and all your generosity and goodies.🤗🌟

Sun Is shining here after a cool night.

Have a wonderful Frigg’s day.☀️

Hi Jo,

Pandas are boring - I haven't seen one being more active than eating or moving to another sleeping place yet, but I can only tell what YouTube offers 😉
If I could choose I'd definitely prefer a Raccoon 😁

Yeah, I was really surprised to see a Rocky and a Rocko post from two of my friends almost one after the other :)

Yesterday was quite nice except a storm in the evening. Today is sunny, but they say it will rain later. I don't mind as long as it doesn't rain tomorrow morning, because I am on my bike at work and I stay here overnight.

As always, it's a pleasure for me dear Jo, I hope you will have a great Frigg's day and wonderful, warm and sunny weekend ahead 🤗🌞

Yes, the raccoon is much more active than what I have seen of a panda. I guess the black around the panda’s eyes sort of gives a raccoon look but the panda weighs much more than Rocky.

I was surprised Hannes the weatherman said frost likely and I had to cover my tomatoes last night. I had lost two of them from the frost the night before. Unbelievable for this time of year.

No sun yet this morning dear Hannes. I hope your weekend is a good one.🤗☀️

Hi Jo,

right, the eyes look similar, but that's all in my eyes ;)

The weather is so unusual this year - we are at the end of Spring, you have frost and it's not much warmer here. Actually, in the mornings it's freezing. After work I rode around the lake this morning, but I have been glad to get home because it was so cold, riding felt like in November, that's weird. I hope the Summer will be better.

Later in the morning it began to rain and it's still rainy. Tomorrow should be better, but we'll see. I hope your weather turns warmer and you'll have a good weekend too, dear Jo 🤗🌞

Wow what a fluffy one, North America's version of a panda with a much wider range of appetite.

Thanks @kohsamui99.🌺 It’s nice seeing Rocky. A lot of raccoons seem to get killed on the highways when crossing the roads.

An animal I would love to see with enduring mask and all around cute fluffiness, I cannot imagine if humans had not arrived taking land that they would have posed a problem ever.

Nice to see he has managed to cope without his mom assisting him, now appears fully grown able to start out on his own Jo.

Thanks for sharing both food to this little guy and to animal lovers who don't know your little raccoons.

I never realized they were so short lived in the wild, glad this little guy stands a chance of making a life knowing he will not be chased.

How so sad when an animal dies on the road especially when it is a mother and the baby becomes an orphan. Rocky and love the name, is so cute and you are so kind Jo.💗

Thanks Angie. 🌺 I’m surprised how many animals get killed on the road. I saw a raccoon’s corpse today while driving into Montague. I was glad to see Rocky this evening and know it wasn’t him hit by a car.
