Amazing Nature: Red Squirrel Or Chipmunk

avatar

I often write about the wildlife, animals and birds, coming to the back deck to eat the food I leave out for them. They like bread laced with peanut butter, seeds and dry cat food.

Over the years I have seen many red squirrels come and go. Last year a couple chipmunks visited and I was delighted as I hadn’t seen chipmunks here for a long time. The squirrel stayed around all last winter but I hadn’t seen the chipmunk again until last week.

Can you tell the different between the chipmunk and the red squirrel. They both are amazing little mammals. I enjoy seeing them come for a visit but not at the same time as a fight would occur with the red squirrel the winner.

The big bushy tail is a giveaway for the squirrel.

The chipmunk is smaller than the red squirrel and has stripes along his back and face. The tail is not as bushy as the squirrel’s tail which curls nicely up on his back.

The chipmunk waits on the deck railing anxious me to bring out some peanuts. Wisely the chipmunk never visits at the same time as the squirrel.

The little red squirrel braves the rain and comes to the back deck for a peanut. The red squirrels are the only squirrels in P.E.I. and although they are endangered, that is the reason they have survived here. Elsewhere, other bigger squirrels, like the grey squirrel, could kill them.

Although they are related, the chipmunk and red squirrel cannot mate. They are both territorial, defending their young and territory. But if a fight ensues the squirrel will win. The chipmunks only defence against their many predators is to run away and hide.

Chipmunks will also fight each other. I saw this happen and wished I had my camera with me for a video. One chipmunk was going back to his home on the path between the back deck and the barn when another chipmunk met him. As quick as lightning they jumped together and wrestled in the air for a few moments and then chased each other to the forest.

If you look closely at this photo, the bite marks from the fight is evident under the stripe on the chipmunk’s back and under the ear.

Both the squirrel and chipmunk will pose for me. :)

Here is the red squirrel on the barbecue cover. This looks like a different one for the tail is not as bushy as normal...fur is missing from the end. When squirrels fight each other over territory they will pull at the tail. I’ve seen these squirrels with hardly any tail left. The tail helps them balance when climbing trees and without it they are at a disadvantage.

Most folks refer to a group of squirrel or chipmunks as a Scurry.

I hope you enjoyed my comparison between these delightful little critters. I’m sure there are many more differences but these are the ones I’ve noticed.

Thanks Hannes, I was glad to see the chipmunk was still around. I hadn’t seen one all winter. Of course the stray cat hanging around was enough to keep them away and now that cat has not been here for a long time.

Much appreciate your support with reblog, generosity and goodies.🙂🍕

Have a wonderful Frigg’s day!☀️

You're most welcome dear Jo 😊

The animals come to you, stay for a while because you care so nicely for them and then they move on. Maybe they think they might even find something better, but they don't know they have already found the best place ... when they find it out many will return 😁

The day was beautiful and warm but I have spent most of it in the office. I'm working tomorrow too, but I will make it a very easy day 😉

Hope your Frigg's Day is also nice and you have a wonderful weekend, dear Jo 🤗🌞

Happy Caturday Hannes,

I had a nice surprise last night. I looked out the back door and there was a skunk checking out the area where I leave the food for the animals. It’s the first one I’ve seen since Peppy went missing.🦨

Today is starting out with a strong sun shining. Yesterday was cool for this time of year but today is suppose to be warmer.

Don’t work too hard dear Hannes and have a lovely weekend. 😊☀️

Hi Jo,
nice surprise 😀 if it's not Peppy himself, then it is surely a friend of his that Peppy recommended you to :)

We have a warm and sunny spring day here - I can see it when I look outside ;) but tomorrow it might rain and next week I can see no sun in the weather forecast.

I take it easy today and however the weather will be tomorrow, I'll make the best of the day :)
You too have a wonderful weekend, dear Jo 🤗🌞

Cheers and !BEER

Thanks @adalger. Yes I think as the older ones die the next generation keeps visiting. I’m not sure how long the chipmunks or squirrels live in the wild. Three years seems to be the consensus .

Have a wonderful day.🌸

A "scurry" of chipmunks, a "warren" of rabbits - interesting terminology. A "murder" of crows. And,

Great Photos!

I love the stories and information you include. How they fight. How the bite marks are visible in your photo. How important it is to keep one's tail intact.

How they pose for you! You could make wildlife photography your full-time career, if you wanted. A young zoology major who videotaped squirrels unexpectedly went viral after she recorded the sounds of a squirrel eating: yum, yum yum.

But you have so MANY talents, Jo - you could be writing children's books about these chipmunks and squirrels and all their in-fighting, and how the little guy with the half-tail overcomes his disadvantage.... Richard Adams was a keen observor of wildlife, as fans of Watership Down all know. :)

It means a lot you like my stories, Carol. .Your inspiration makes me want to put something together for children.

Hubby doesn’t call me queen of the squirrels but the squirrel whisperer. :)

I could have used a outside camera last night when I saw a skunk checking the back lawn to see if the birds left any of the food. I had befriended one skunk a couple years ago but he vanished and I think he was killed on the road.

Thanks Carol for always being so supportive and a wonderful friend.❤️

You are most welcome ❤️ and thank YOU for the beautiful stories and images!
You befriended a skunk - I love it!! Skunks and possums are among my favorite creatures.
I really hope your skunk friend didn't meet that terrible fate on the road. And I hope you will collect some of your anecdotes and stories to put in children's books. With self-publishing, anyone can do it, photos included. (Says the woman who's thought about this for more than ten years without acting on it!)

Really interesting read @redheadpei, and great pictures too.
I didn't really know the differences, myself. You doing a nice job feeding these little people, I think from now on you never go out without your camera, as you've learnt that you never know when you'd happen upon something spectacular from these little buggers.

Thanks @nevies for your visit and kind comments. I’m glad you learned something new from my story.

Yes, I missed a good video of the two chipmunks fighting when I didn’t have my camera.

Such cute little animals Jo, I love watching them when I visit Canada. Why they come when they do and for how long is anybody's guess. It is a bit like the magpies and butcher birds. Like very early this morning the magpies were calling for some meat but there was no way I was getting up early.

Haha Angie, Your magpies and butcher birds know who to call for some meat. Much like the blue Jays and ravens here. They will call outside in the mornings if I’m not up when they think I should be to put out some food.

Hope you have a great weekend.❤️
