In this opportunity, I share with you information and images of a plant that aroused my interest because of the many bees and other insects that danced and posed on its small flowers, La Peregrina, Jatropa.

En esta oportunidad, comparto con ustedes información e imágenes de una planta que despertó mi interés por las muchas abejas, y otros insectos que danzaban y posaban en sus pequeñas flores, La Peregrina, Jatropa.

Peregrina is a perennial ornamental shrub that belongs to the Euphorbiacea family, genus Jatropha, its scientific name is Jatropha integérrima, and there are approximately 175 species.

La Peregrina, es un arbusto ornamental perenne que pertenece a la familia Euphorbiacea, género Jatropha, su nombre científico es Jatropha integérrima, y existen aproximadamente 175 especies.

Different places of origin are assigned, among them Africa and Central America, being very popular in Cuba.

Se asignan distintos lugares de origen entre ellos África y Centroamérica, siendo muy popular en Cuba.

It can grow up to three (3) meters high, its shape is slightly rounded at the top, it is characterized by having several rigid and narrow trunks (5 to 10 cms) very resistant, from which the branches develop with their leaves and flowers. In tropical or warm climates, it flowers all year round.

Puede crecer hasta tres (3) metros de altura, su forma es ligeramente redondeada en la parte superior, se caracteriza por tener varios troncos rígidos y angostos (5 a 10 cms) muy resistentes, del cual se desarrollan las ramas con sus hojas y flores. En clima tropical o cálido, florece todo el año.

There is also a variety of Jatropha integérrima , smaller in size (about 1 meter) suitable for use as a house plant.

También hay una variedad de Jatropha integérrima, de menor tamaño (1 metro aproximadamente) adecuada para utilizarla como plantas de interior.

Its branches have a toxic latex, which is why it is necessary to be careful with its handling and cutting.

Sus ramas tienen un látex tóxico, razón por la cual es necesario tener cuidado con su manipulación y corte.

Its fruits grow in reddish clusters, elliptical in shape. The inner part of the fruit has 3 dark brown seeds, which are used to reproduce the plant.

Sus frutos crecen en racimos de color rojizo, de forma elíptica. En la parte interna el fruto tiene 3 semillas de color marrón oscuro, que son utilizadas para reproducir la planta.

Their flowers are very showy because of their intense red or pink color. Its small flowers can grow up to 4 cm, have 5 star-shaped petals and grow in bunches or clusters, at the end of the branches, standing out on the plant as a natural decoration.

Sus flores son muy llamativas por su color rojo o rosado intenso. Son pequeñas pueden crecer hasta 4 cm, tienen 5 pétalos en forma de estrella y crecen en manojos o ramilletes, en el extremo de las ramas, destacando en la planta como como una decoración natural.

The flowers can be feminine or masculine, this can be appreciated by the shape and quantity of their delicate yellowish stamens. It was one of the outstanding characteristics that I could appreciate when I observed its flowers.

Las flores pueden ser femeninas o masculinas , esto se aprecia por la forma y cantidad de sus delicados estambres de color amarillento. Fue una de las características resaltantes que pude apreciar cuando observaba sus flores.

It is much visited by bees and other insects, which fly around the plant and perch on its flowers, enjoying the delicious nectar they offer.

Es muy visitada por abejas y otros insectos, que vuelan alrededor de la planta y se posan en sus flores, disfrutando del delicioso néctar que les ofrecen.

Its leaves are intense green, they grow alternately. Its shape is varied, slightly oval, its dimensions can be found from 12 to 6 cm wide and long.

Sus hojas son de color verde intenso, crecen de forma alterna. Su forma es variada, ligeramente ovalada, sus dimensiones pueden encontrarse de 12 a 6 cm de ancho y largo.

CARE OF THE PLANT

  • It little care. Moderate watering and good drainage is one of them.It is adversely affected by excessive moisture or long periods of humidity, .
  • Requiere de pocos cuidados. Riego moderado y tener buen drenaje es uno de ellos. Es afectada negativamente por la humedad excesiva o por los largos periodos de humedad.
  • It adapts to any type of soil, including marine environments.
  • Se adapta a cualquier tipo de suelo, incluso los de ambiente marinos.

    The plant can be pruned or left to grow naturally.
    La planta puede ser podada o dejarla crecer de forma natural

  • It grows well in an outdoor environment, with direct or semi-direct sunlight.
  • Crece bien en ambiente externo, con incidencia solar directa o semidirecta.
  • It reproduces by seeds and cuttings.
  • Se reproduce por semillas y por esquejes.
  • The sap and seeds are toxic. Take the necessary precautions when handling the plant directly. Wash hands immediately and thoroughly.
  • La savia y las semillas son tóxicas. Tomar las precauciones, necesarias si realiza manipulación directa de la planta. Lavar las manos de inmediato, cuidadosamente.

    Hola @raizayanez gracias por enriquecer nuestros conocimientos, respecto a lo que sin duda, es su pasión y acción por la naturaleza. Más allá de la paciencia que tuvo en captar las imágenes de La Peregrina, Jatropa que acompaña su magistral escrito, deja claro el respeto que le tiene.
    Muchas veces, pasamos y vemos como personas manipulan las ramas de La Peregrina. Pero ahora tengo el conocimiento que tiene un latex tóxico y puedo advertir si llegase a toparme nuevamente con ese episodio. Otro punto importante, las características del sexo de las flores, vaya observación felicitaciones. Gracias por tus entregas.
