Our amazing nature!

A special visitor that selected our garden for a special purpose. To mate!

I introduce to you the acclaimed "Yellow Presba" (Syncordulia gracilis) Dragonfly.

My first time to see him and he is indeed a very beautiful guy, so I kept an eye on him for the whole day while he graciously rewarded me by showing me his love life.

Did I tell you that he is very handsome?
Any woman will go weak at the knees to stare into those eyes 🤣
457.JPG

Really a very handsome fella as he hung around in the garden, as if he was waiting for someone.
464.JPG

This Acraea Butterfly (Acraea horta) took up a spectator position.
468.JPG

Bang! There it was and that's what he came to do!
518.JPG

The two took up different positions in the garden and maybe they also have a "Kama Sutra" book on mating positions 😉
511.JPG

I had to be sharp with the camera as together they flitted all around. Just a pity that I couldn't get them in flight, as I couldn't switch from "Macro" to "Normal" fast enough.
516.JPG

And then it was all over and the magic was done!
561.JPG

Phew! I don't know from where the squirrel watched the fun, but he needed a drink afterwards.

So yes, it was indeed a wonderful visit and I am glad to have seen it and to share it with you. Dragonflies only live for a limited time out of the water and they spend this time to mate and obviously to eat.
They spend the majority of their lives in the water as nymphs, some up to 7 years, before they transform into dragonflies.

You can read more about their lives here;

@papilloncharity your post is incredible! How did you manage to get such great pictures of them? The dragonflies I see usually avoid people. Thank you for sharing the pictures and story!

Hahaha, thank you and it takes a lot of practise and patience my friend. One also has to know one's targets very well as they all have habits and tricks.
My pleasure to share.

Cheers and !BEER

You could probably approach National Geographic with your work, you certainly know your subjects :) Have you captured other insect stories before?

Thank you for the Beer :)

These dragonfly photos are great again, Zac, I like especially the first photo - the pose dragonfly looks cool with the wings downwards 😃

Thank you kindly Hannes, that's why I put it as the first photo, as I knew that you would like it.
Sadly post voting values have dropped dramatically, but life goes on my friend.

Cheers and thanks!

My pleasure Zac 😊

Yes, the Hive just doesn't want to rise. Let's hope that with the end of the pandemic this will change too.

It is indeed a long wait Hannes, but in the meantime we have the opportunity to keep on building. I am unfortunately going through some health issues again and have had only one full night of sleep since Saturday, but life goes on 😀

The end of the pandemic is what everyone is praying for, as it is again causing record deaths here and this new strain is even taking children. We feel so sorry for those that are left behind.
A Luta Continua!

Cheers and thanks!

The new virus mutation has found its way through England to Austria, but I haven't heard more about it yet - I avoid too much news watching, because it's always the same and disturbing anyway.

You say "such is life" and "life goes on" and I agree 🙂

A senior academic at the Theology Seminary where Marian works is in a very haggard state.
His only sister picked up this new Covid strain and she died in 3 days time.

We have stopped watching TV one and a half years ago. Before that we only watched the news and sports.
So, you are right, as the news is very depressing.

One of my addictions is to sit at an outdoors coffee shop with a Latte and a newspaper while Marian does the shopping for the new week on a Sunday.
I still do it, but we wipe the table and chairs with sterilizing fluid.

So please take care of yourself and the family over there Hannes.

Cheers and thanks

Yes, I have heard that it is much more dangerous, and you may believe me that we do take care.
Our family will survive this pandemic and so will you, my friend 😊

Good news, no hugging, no handshakes and no kissing of any unmentionable persons 🤣
We pray for you and your family my friend and Marian even prays for your cats 😉

Cheers and thanks.

Those are some super photos! Dragonflies are so often in constant motion... so I imagine it took quite a bit of patience to get those. Nature is amazing, indeed!

=^..^=

Thank you and patience is nature's cousin my friend.
Glad that you liked the photos.

Beautiful captures of the "Yellow Presba" dragonfly! To bad you couldn't catch them in flight but it was quite something to catch them mating!
Interesting fact that the dragonflies live most of their lives in water as nymphs - learn something new every day!

Thank you and they are fascinating creatures my friend.
What I will do at the next sighting, is that I will set the camera on "Sport" and wait for them to fly.
Yes, 7 years as nymphs in the water and 6 months of adult life doesn't sound like a bargain to me.
But then, they lay many eggs, meaning many nymphs available as feed for fish and other water creatures.
Nature is so intricate!

7 years...that's a lot. A very nice post, loved the details of the wings

Thank you and yes, to think that they can live as nymphs for so long under water is simply amazing, aspecially as their adult life periods are so so short.
Amazing little creatures.

Nature and its living creatures is amazing

Thank you and amazing indeed my friend.
