Oh Deer! White-Tailed Deer

(Edited)

I was on the return leg of one of my evening walks last week, right around sunset, when I noticed movement out of the corner of my eyes on the nearby field.

Now it's one thing to see deer when you're nervously driving in a car and 180° the opposite when you see them as you are taking a relaxing walk in their environment!

White-tailed deer live in harmony with humans in the suburban area where I live and deer sightings during the Fall mating season are quite common. On the other hand...

...I rarely see deer out this early in the Springtime and it was a quite a thrilling experience to end my walk!

Females give birth to one to three spotted young, known as fawns, in mid- to late spring, generally in May or June. Fawns lose their spots during the first summer and weigh from 44 to 77 lb (20 to 35 kg) by the first winter. Male fawns tend to be slightly larger and heavier than females. For the first four weeks, fawns are hidden in vegetation by their mothers, who nurse them four to five times a day. This strategy keeps scentlevels low to avoid predators. After about a month, the fawns are then able to follow their mothers on foraging trips. They are usually weaned after 8–10 weeks, but cases have been seen where mothers have continued to allow nursing long after the fawns have lost their spots (for several months, or until the end of fall) as seen by rehabilitators and other studies. Males leave their mothers after a year and females leave after two.

Bucks are generally sexually mature at 1.5 years old and begin to breed even in populations stacked with older bucks.

Public Service Announcement

When you are driving and see a sign with a deer on it (like the one below) please exercise caution and be ready to slow down at the blink of an eye for deer running across the road as nobody wants to be in an avoidable automobile accident!

They are beautiful animals.
We have a healthy population of them here in Upstate NY and we do keep our eyes peeled while driving, they can pop out anytime.
Nice post.

Thank you for the positive feedback and support! @farm-mom💫

You guys are probably used to seeing herds of deer all year round in upstate NY. I'm eagerly looking forward to spotting at least one fawn in the upcoming weeks. Please let me know if you do!

Thank you very much! @Lizelle

I was thrilled the deer actually stayed still allowing me to get some photographs on my cellphone instead of taking flight💨 as they normally do!

How's everything going in Durban?
Please stay safe!💕

Oh yeah they are all over out here in the country. I am careful, use deer whistles and yet have hit more then I like to remember. My high school math teacher drove a Corvette and hit one. Sadly it came through the windshield and killed him. RIP Mr B. Now that is why I like a higher up vehicle.
