An unexpected encounter with a beaver - this time he showed himself in all his glory (close-up photos and videos of how he bites wood) / Niespodziewane spotkanie z bobrem (zdjęcia z bliska i filmiki jak gryzie drewno)

Just like a week ago, my boyfriend and I went on a bicycle trip to the Vistula River. Today it was much colder than a week ago, even during the ride we were caught by the rain, but then it cleared and most importantly, we managed to meet a beaver again and this time I saw him for a long time all over and I could watch him gnawing the wood. See how the beaver bites the wood ;) I even made two videos where you can see him doing it.

Podobnie, jak tydzień temu wybrałam się z chłopakiem na wycieczkę rowerową nad Wisłę. Dzisiaj było dużo zimniej niż tydzień temu, nawet w trakcie przejażdżki złapał nas deszcz, ale później wypogodziło się i co najważniejsze, znowu udało nam się spotkać bobra i tym razem widziałam go przez dłuższy czas całego i mogłam poobserwować jak gryzł drewno. Zobaczcie jak sobie je słodko podgryza ;) Nawet nakręciłam dwa filmiki, na których widać jak to robi.

We wouldn't even notice this beaver, because at the beginning he was swimming in the water and the brown head can't be seen too much from the bike path and this time I wouldn't have gone to the river because I had been watching it elsewhere before, but suddenly we noticed that the little red dog was barking loudly right by the river and when I looked at it I saw a beaver next to him! The owners of the dog tried to catch him and fortunately, they succeeded and went with the dog in a different direction, and the beaver apparently felt more confident and came to the surface. It seems that the beaver created a protective and breeding structure in this place, the so-called beaver lodge. *

Nawet nie zauważylibyśmy tego bobra, bo na początku pływał w wodzie, a brązowej głowy nie widać za bardzo z drogi rowerowej i tym razem nie poszłabym nad rzekę, bo przyglądałam jej się wcześniej w innym miejscu, ale nagle zauważyliśmy, że mały rudy pies głośno szczeka tuż nad rzeką i gdy na niego spojrzałam, dostrzegłam przy nim bobra! Własciciele psa próbowali go złapać i na szczęście im się to udało i poszli z psem w inną stronę, a bóbr najwidoczniej poczuł się pewniej i wyszedł na powierzchnię. Wygląda na to, że bóbr stworzył w tym miejscu konstrukcję ochronno-lęgową, tzw. żeremię.

This time the beaver seemed even bigger to me. I walked to the edge of the river and this time I was able to observe him from a closer distance, while also remembering to move away if he began to approach me. You can see his lodge in the photo below. *

Bóbr tym razem wydał mi się jeszcze większy. Podeszłam na brzeg rzeki i tym razem mogłam go obserwować z bliższej odległości, pamiętając jednocześnie, żeby się oddalić, gdyby zaczął się do mnie zbliżać. Na zdjęciu poniżej możecie zobaczyć jego żeremię.

A beaver gnawed at small pieces of wood. It was located in a place where the river flowed in a fairly strong current. It was amazing to watch it and listen to the sounds it made.

Bóbr gryzł sobie małe kawałki drewna. Znajdował się w miejscu, w którym rzeka płynęła dość silnym nurtem. Niesamowicie się go oglądało i słuchało odgłosów, które przy tym wydawał.

Contrary to popular belief, beavers do not eat wood, but only root, young bark and shoots, but only from autumn to spring, when there is no other food. When they recover herbaceous plants in the spring, beavers abandon a heavy winter diet and eat soft plants. In total, the beaver menu includes over 200 species of herbaceous and 100 woody plants.

Wbrew powszechnym wyobrażeniom bobry nie jedzą drewna, a jedynie podkorze, młodą korę i pędy, ale tylko od jesieni do wiosny, kiedy nie ma innego pokarmu. Kiedy na wiosnę odbiją rośliny zielne, bobry porzucają ciężkostrawną, zimową dietę i jedzą miękkie rośliny. Ogółem w bobrzym menu znajduje się ponad 200 gatunków roślin zielnych i 100 drzewiastych.
