Environmental pollution in Cancun, Mexico, a very touristy city, has it decreased?😷🤔

Much has been said about the planet being in better condition without the presence of human beings, in some places animals have appeared that had not been seen for years, plants that claim what is theirs. Would there really be a difference in a place where a lot of people come and suddenly the place is no longer so crowded?

A journalistic note published in BioGuia by Deliana Moreno

The city of Cancun, in Mexico, has always been one of the favorite destinations of tourists. Especially for its beautiful beaches, its crystal clear water and white sand.

In various places around the world the planet has taken a breather from human beings, it seems that the pandemic was bad for us but beneficial for ecosystems and species.

In Cancun, which is one of the coasts with the greatest tourist attraction in the world and receives thousands of tourists every month, the absence of tourists has been felt. In the absence of this, the ecosystem has improved considerably.

It has always been an alarming situation

Due to the tourism activities on the beaches and other places, several organizations have denounced the notable deterioration of the coasts of Cancun. In 2018, Ocean Conservancy activists indicated that they collected more than 400 kilos of waste from just two of the main beaches in Cancun, during a voluntary cleanup day. This represents a truly worrying situation.

Despite these efforts, sometimes that work is not enough, since a part of the waste found on the beaches is also buried under the sand. Most of this waste is: cigarette butts, bottles, plastic bags, caps, among others.

And we already know the fate of many residues: that they are ingested by turtles, fish and other species😥🐢

Despite the pandemic, was there an improvement?

Due to the low concentrations of tourists present in the current year and the previous one, there has been a positive impact on the environment in Cancun (according to data from BioGuia)

Due to the pandemic, the entrance of people to the beaches has been very controlled; Only a third of people are being allowed in compared to a normal situation. This measure has been applied to avoid the crowding of people and stop the spread of the virus, as well as in many other establishments.

The civil organization Centinelas del Agua, concludes that the environmental situation on the coasts of Cancun has improved by 90%. We really don't know how true this information is, as no quantitative data is provided.

What we can know is that the measures to avoid contamination, such as the prohibition of entering the beach with alcoholic beverages, is a fact. And the idea is to continue implementing it even after the contingency ends, waiting for this to be fulfilled to the letter.

What do you think about this❓

Do you think these measures are enough to keep this issue positive❓

Thanks for sharing news from around the world, yes some regions reported sightings of certain animals not seen in many years during initial hard lockdown around the world.

@joanstewart I hope the situation continues to improve, there is nothing better than seeing healthy ecosystems and being able to enjoy them

A valuable report!

In my opinion starting small is better than nothing and more rules should be implemented period.

But after all the big changes need to come from companies and industries and finally from us consumers. We can clean up as much as we want, if we don't start changing our habits it is a fight David against Goliath.

There is a massive carpet of waste floating around the oceans due to the dumping of trash. Countries, like Germany are shipping their waste in order to have a cheaper way of getting rid of it. And the countries that it is shipped too usually are not the richest ones and in the end they just dump the worlds trash wherever they can.

There are islands in the Maldives that became nothing more than trash islands, and that eventually ends up in the ocean, being washed up to every shore that it can reach over time.
