First Post: What is this?

avatar

Hi fellow Hiveians,

This is my first post here in the amazing nature group! Love that there’s a group that’s got lots of people in it for something great like nature and the amazing critters in it.

What am I?

So what better way to start out my first post like asking for some help identifying a new critter for us?

Our son and I were out for our evening stroll of the neighborhood and checking out the animals. We’ve got a good amount of them, we are next to a major river so there’s lots of things enjoying the abundance of plant and animal life around. We have the normals like squirrels, chipmunks, several bird varieties like red breasted robins, crows, cardinals, blue jays, wood peckers, hawks. We also have some really cool ones like muskrats and red bellied cooter turtles.

What is this little guy? I don’t have much experience with groundhogs and after talking to my wife about it we think that’s what it is. What do y’all think? They loved the berries, enough to let us get like 5 feet from them without moving an inch lol.

What Berry?

Now for the other thing. The birds, animals and bugs all loved this tree. What kind of berry is this? I know there’s lots of really cool wild edibles but I’m not familiar with such a massive tree having some berry humans could eat. I figured if all the animals are eating it, we might be able to as well. I don’t test those things until I talk to people who know more than I do lol.

This tree is easily 50 feet tall. I’m not familiar with one that produces edible berries. Any tips?

The final picture is the cute one of the little guy checking us out, trying to figure out if he can come back out to eat berries again.

Let me know what you think of our latest find! We love learning about the flora and fauna of our area! In our walk, a lady told us, that saw the animal too, she couldn’t name anything outside of a squirrel and chipmunk. It’s a shame! What’s closest to us is the easiest to learn from.

I'm pretty sure I can help you on the berries, because I have them. They look like black mulberry to me, so they aren't ripe yet, when they turn black they'll be nice and sweet.

I'm have no experience with native American wildlife, but they do seem to look like the images of groundhogs, don't they. Aren't they just the cutest little things! Well done on getting so close to them.

Thanks for the mulberry info! That’s really cool. Do they grow that tall? That’s pretty crazy. I’m familiar with the name black mulberry but I’ve never actually seen one or know what the tree looks like. It would be really cool if this was indeed the tree! I don’t know if my wife will let me test it out given she isn’t feeling the best lately but I would love to try it eventually lol

The groundhogs were indeed pretty cute! I’ve seen the Groundhog Day ones but never seen one in person so it was cool. They were very curious little things. Either that or they were so enthralled by the mulberry tree they couldn’t care less we were there until a dog came by.

I appreciate the info and the great comment thank you!

Mulberry is my guess as well. They can get pretty big, we've got some huge mulberry trees in the area (though one isn't that tall, just broad and acts like a willow tree so there's a pretty cool area underneath). I would actually have to step back and look up a bit to see if they're as tall as the one you described, never occurred to me to measure the trees before.

Thanks for checking it out and the great comment!

I'm glad a few people recognize the berry. I may have over-estimated the height of it, it could be 30-35 feet tall which is still tall for a tree with edible berries I think. I'm used to seeing apple trees and blueberry trees that are maybe 10-15 feet tall so this was cool to find out!

I'm anxious to try one but also nervous so I will wait until next year maybe lol.

Yes, they get pretty tall. They can be kept shorter, more like a bush, or left to grow into a tree. Ours is in the quail run, so it gets a regular trim.

Yeah that's cool, I kind of like it being such a big tree but it makes sense that you would want to keep it shorter as a bush so you can actually get to the berries without a cherry-picker truck lol

I just learned of the community myself! Too bad I haven't seen one of the people that brought me to the community comment or vote on this.. can't win them all I guess.

I don't know man, I would love to live near those beautiful Greek beaches! That itself is unreal!
