Cotton Bugs - Chinche del Algodoncillo [ENG-ESP]

Hello, respectful and curious of nature, in this opportunity I share information and photographs of a living being that goes unnoticed among the vegetation of the square I walk through, but that for some observers like me, are interested in knowing its importance in the natural system. I invite you to enjoy the Cotton Bug insect found in the green areas of Plaza 66 located between Jujuy and Belgrano avenues in Argentina.

Hola, respetuosos y curiosos de la naturaleza, en esta oportunidad comparto información y fotografías de un ser vivo que pasa desapercibido entre la vegetación de la plaza que transito, pero que para algunos observadores como yo, se interesan en conocer su importancia en el sistema natural. Les invito a disfrutar del insecto Chinche del Algodoncillo encontrado en las áreas verdes de la Plaza 66 ubicada entre las avenidas Jujuy y Belgrano de Argentina.

This milkweed bug has a striking appearance because its color gives it away on the leaves and buds of the milkweed plant. The aesthetic design is interesting, two black spots on the upper part of the yellow surface of the wings and black on the wing tips; there is also a pale spot on top of another one that crosses or joins the wings. All this play of colors configures a mysterious mask that informs predators that it is toxic. The bedbug has a white line that divides the design of the body with the head, making a harmonious color combination with red and light areas under the body. Three pairs of segmented legs, two antennae and two eyes complete the species of the milkweed.

Este Chinche del Algodoncillo tiene una apariencia llamativa porque su color le delata en las hojas y capullos de la planta de algodoncillo o asclepias. El diseño estético es interesante, dos manchas negras en la parte superior de la superficie amarilla de las alas y color negro en las puntas de las alas; también hay una mancha pálida arriba sobre otra que atraviesa o une las alas. Todo ese juego de colores configura una máscara misteriosa que informa a depredadores que es tóxica. El chinche posee una línea blanca que divide el diseño del cuerpo con la cabeza haciendo una combinación de colores armoniosa con el rojo y zonas claras debajo del cuerpo. Tres pares de patas segmentadas, dos antenas y dos ojos terminan de constituir la especie del algodoncillo.

The colorful insect of flat and elongated shape, measuring approximately 12 to 16 millimeters, feeds on the nectar of the flower and the seed of the milkweed plant, hence it is possible toxic insect because the plant has it and it stores it in its body. The bug has a mouth system that injects saliva into the seed and sucks it. If the food is reduced they can consume other insects such as flies or aphids, for this reason it is an alternative to control pests, due to this behavior it is called a killer.

El insecto vistoso de forma plana y alargada, mide aproximadamente entre 12 y 16 milímetros, se alimenta del néctar de la flor y la semilla de la planta de algodoncillo, de ahí que sea posible insecto tóxico porque la planta lo posee y este lo almacene en su cuerpo. El Chinche tiene un sistema bucal que inyecta saliva a la semilla y la chupa; si el alimento se reduce pueden consumir otros insectos como moscas o pulgones, por tal razón es una alternativa para controlar plagas, debido a este comportamiento se le tilda de asesina.

Adult bedbugs copulate for 3 to 4 days, remain attached from the abdomen and can walk or feed without problems. The female deposits large numbers of eggs on the plant in spring. The nymphs hatch reddish in color and live by feeding. The behavior is sociable, they are grouped together, eat together and send signals to inform the place to stock up on nutrients.

Los adultos Chinches copulan durante 3 o 4 días, quedan adheridos desde el abdomen y pueden caminar o alimentarse sin problema. La hembra deposita grandes cantidades de huevos sobre la planta en primavera. Las ninfas eclosionan de color rojiza hacen vida alimentándose. El comportamiento es sociable se encuentran agrupadas, comen juntos y envían señales para informar el lugar para abastecerse de los nutrientes.

The photographs were taken in April, by that time there was a large number for the autumn season, now there are few for two reasons: those responsible for the plaza performed maintenance of the plants and recently the winter season is approaching and the bugs make a pause in their organism to hibernate due to environmental conditions. Another point of interest, the common or small cotton bugs coexist with the monarch butterfly, if for some reason this tribe exceeds in mass, it becomes a threat to the butterfly, so it is important to control the cotton bug insect so that there is a balance in the ecosystem.

Las fotografías se tomaron en abril para ese entonces existía una gran cantidad para época otoñal, ahora hay pocas por dos razones: los responsables de la plaza realizaron mantenimientos a las plantas y reciente la estación de invierno se aproxima y los chinches hace como una pausa en su organismo para invernar por las condiciones ambientales. Otro punto de interés, El Chinche del Algodoncillo común o pequeño coexiste con la mariposa monarca, si por algún razón esta tribu supera en masa, se convierte en amenaza para la mariposa, así que, es importante el control del insecto Chinche del Algodoncillo para que exista un equilibrio en el ecosistema.
