An Experience Not To Be Missed

If you haven't been to hospital lately you are missing out on some entertainment. I don't know where they find their screening staff, but they would make a good comedy series. How inefficient can one be should be the title.

This week was one of those weeks that peaked with everything not going to plan. I honestly didn't know what else was going to be thrown at us from left field and will never try and guess or presume again.

A few weeks ago I said health wise everyone is getting better as my wife and daughter both had Covid. There was a set back for a few days after that so i just kept quiet as I am obviously some type of jinx. This week on Monday my wife said she was feeling a little rough and that she needs to see the doctor.

The doctor did some tests and gave her some medicine for the severe headaches with strict instructions to phone if there is no improvement. The doctor thought she had brain swelling otherwise known as Encephalitis. Look at this time no one is wanting to go to hospital no matter how bad things are as it is basically a Covid hospital.

Tuesday morning there was no improvement and once you Google this shit you are done. There is nothing good about Encephalitis and you are going to die according to the internet doctor. She checked in to the hospital which was quite funny as they ask you so many questions.

They start off obviously with your personal details like your name and address and do you know anyone who has had Covid. She obviously said yes and they said who? When she said me they took a good 4 steps back and they then wanted a sister in charge to take over. It was quite funny though as they are nurses so what did they expect. I am sure they are doing loads of back steps and the Sister is doing all of their work.

The Covid tests came back negative which then freed her up to go to the green ward and there was a red and yellow ward as well which must be like a traffic light. Red you have it and yellow they are not quite sure is my guess. You don't have to be an Einstein to work that one out.

On Wednesday after a cat scan and an MRI plus many blood tests including a spinal tap as they weren't sure if it was Meningitis or Encephalitis. The rash on the one arm threw them so as soon as Meningitis was mentioned you don't feel great. If it was Meningitis you are booked in quarantine for 3 weeks so that wasn't a good one to pick and the Encephalitis was looking like a good deal now. I had slept badly by falling asleep on the couch the night before and of all things had a stiff neck which is one of the symptoms. I knew that and didn't have to Google lol, but talk about bad timing to get a stiff neck of all things.

Luckily it was Encephalitis and she returned home today with a bag full of medication. The family is happy as we were dreading the hospital visits as we had a roster as only one family member per day for 30 minutes at 3 pm is allowed. I went on Friday not knowing how long it would take to get in and I should have agreed Saturday as my son would have then missed all the fun.

I arrived early for once at 2 pm and spent the next hour trying to get in as the screening just took forever. Three nurses screening for over a 100 people in the queue took a good 90 minutes and then it took another 10 minutes to get into the hospital. Someone who was illiterate with a clip board wearing a white overall donning spectacles didn't fool me. He looked intelligent until he opened his mouth and that was the part that gave him away and I knew this was going to be a real test. He asked me what color the ward I was going to even though I had a green sticker on my shirt from the nurses that took over an hour to obtain. I asked him if he was colour blind and remembered the no rude signs so I behaved. Ward and bed number which I knew the ward part, but the bed bit now he had me. Einstein then asked for the name of the patient which surely should be the first bit in this whole quiz and he told me where to go.

That was not a pleasant experience and not something you expect but then again you are in Africa. I was worried I would have a temperature by the time I was tested waiting in the baking sun for well over an hour wearing that stupid mask. I know it is the same for everyone but at least speed up the process. I did see the funny side of things as there were signs saying if you are rude you will be not allowed entry and another saying no sexual harassment. They should be so lucky as no person is sexy in a Hazmat suit so I have no idea if someone rates themselves or not. I did have a quiet chuckle with that one and thought it odd.

The week is finally over and at least we are Covid free and can now get back to normal or try to at least.

I am glad to hear she is doing better and that the meds are working. I hope they continue to get her back into good health.
