A Market Place in My California

avatar
(Edited)

I live in a small town.

Downtown local business is comprised of small, misceleaneous retail stores and restaurants.

What is immediately noticeable in the downtown area of four short blocks are the outdoor eating places.

There are at least more than one outdoor eating area in front of restaurants on each block.

This curbside barbecue...

extends to the entire block!

Even the Japanese restaurant across the street has outdoor seating.

We have three of this type of shop...

that sell vintage items that maybe of interest to certain shoppers.

But what I love most is that the next street over are found some of the notable homes in this town.

This Italianate style home with Corinthian motifs is typical of the most popular style of Victorian architecture in this town in the 1870s. The house was built in 1875

Next is a three-story Georgian Colonial Revival style home that was built in 1905 by a San Francisco architectural firm.

This one is a true gem in the heart of my town. This home has been designated State Historical Landmark #864. The house also received the town's Heritage Home award in 1986.

This home, one of the oldest in this town, was built in 1868 by a farmer who moved from Michigan after selling his 320-acre farm near this place. This house received the town's Heritage Home award in 1999.

Up next is an Italianate Victorian style home built in 1878.

This is the only remaining example of a Second Empire style residence with its characteristic Mansard roof house in this town. It was built in 1882. The first owner of this house came west as a miner and later went into farming.

A Queen Anne style house that was built in 1890, this house received the town's Heritage Home award in 1990. The house stands virtually as built.

Another late version of the Queen Anne style home with elements of Colonial Revival. It is a picturesque home that received the town's Heritage award in 1989.

What a wonderful looking town @silversaver888. Living in Orange County down south for my formative years I sometimes forget that there are small towns in California. The downtown in my current home is quite similar to yours, a few blocks of locally owned businesses. I have to say I am particularly interested in this shop and it's wares :)

image.png

Love those houses too, so cool. I wonder which one of those you call home...?

Hahaha, the shop owner knows how to attract people to go it with that Brownie sign. Imagine brownies with pure honey caramel sauce, decadent!

I really love all of those beautiful homes. They use to build them with such happy details. Now, it is rare to see a home built with that much character.

Thanks for sharing these.

I must have cost so much a century ago to build beautiful homes like these, and can you imagine how much it will cost today! Many houses of today are track homes. However, they can still have so much character with the owners' personal touches, especially with landscaping and in the interiors.
Thank you for checking out this article, @jacey.boldart. I appreciate you 🥰🌺🤙

Barbecues are always fun! At many of the get-togethers here in the house, I have a barbecue in some form or another. My favorite is smoked brisket, because it is so easy for me to make, and is so tender and so very delicious!
Have a great evening, my friend @stokjockey, and take care 🥰🌺🤙.

I love architecture almost as much as flowers. How did you know? There is just something about the way houses were built years ago, there is an elegance that goes beyond the esthetic cover of it. The visual impact takes my breath away.

One has to wonder about all the different people that have lived in those houses. How many were born there? Died there? How many birthdays were celebrated birthdays there? Did the have a pet? I wonder.

The variety of different spaces that were created, the music rooms, the butler's pantries, and, having a renovation that I am doing right now on an 1869 Rustic Victorian, I can honestly say that finding the right way to express the love one has about it, what is to be done to transform it back to it the original dream and desire to make the town more beautiful.

Such a lovely little town, a place that one would love to call theirs. People knowing people, loving thy neighbor, this is what small towns are all about. By the way, I think there are more eateries than stores. :)

At least we know you are being fed. Thank you so much for inviting us to your neighborhood! It was a delightful visit and I hope to get back here again real soon. Your hospitality is beyond reproach. It really surprised me, but, also delights me to know how much effort people put into it. It pointed out our differences in the beginning, but, then, it really started showing how many things our cultures share. When the day is done, it shows off how human we all are and how we basically all care about our families and others. I love the experience of it all. I appreciate the love and support given to #MarketFriday! Thank you! Truly! Your participation adds a piece of your world, and I have to say, people are interested in is seeing it. This entire challenge has opened up the world to me and so many others. Thank you again for being a part of all this! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

When I am in this street, I just don't drive by. I usually take a lingering walk and imagine the same things you mentioned. And there are times too when I see some small detail in the structure. It amazes me that craftsmen did those details in areas if the houses where no one may really see and admire their work. Then I think that they must have done it for the love of their craft and perhaps for God and the angels who are the only ones who would see it.
It does appear that there are more restaurants! I think that next #marketfriday, I shall show the other shops. Some are so charming!
Thank you, sweet @dswigle, for the opportunity to show the market place in our downtown area. I love market Friday!
Have a lovely evening, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

I love the old homes that have so much character to them. Over in the next municipality of New Westminster is a distract call Queen's Park. The area is dotted with the old architecture since it is the oldest residential community in British Columbia. I don't get the chance to go by there often but many are so well cared for over the decades many having been titled to the local political, aristocratic and business figures and leaders of the past.
Meanwhile I dwell in a 1950s home in a boring suburb.
Always, with love 🤗 🌺 ❤️

And when we are gone from this world and our homes are still standing, there will be at least one person who will wonder who lived our home and what lifestyle we had, but do you think they'll ever guess that we stacked precious metals, sis 😁?
Have a great 2-days off, my lovely sis @kerrislravenhill. Take care🥰🌺🤙 and xoxo 🤗💕💋!

The homes are pretty as is, but even prettier when the homes are decked for the holidays. Oh gosh, the holidays are upon us. What... it is the last quarter of the year 2020! Where did the time go?

Hey sis! You know, you are right; the holidays are just around the corner. We went to Walmart today, and it was interesting to me that there were no big and over the top displays for Halloween. They also usually have the beginning start of seriously early Christmas as well, and there is NOTHING! It makes me wonder how the stores are going to hold up for the holidays? Maybe it's time the world focused on the true meaning of Christmas!

Have a lovely week ahead and take care @silversaver888!🤗🌸💕😘

PS: @actifit-lamb just posted! She's had a bit of a shock!

That house has an aviary slightly visible to the right of the house. I must show that one of these days. Some parts of the town are really pretty and charming, other neighborhoods have modern homes, still, other areas have homes from the 50s. Overall I enjoy living in my neighborhood because people are generally very friendly.
Have a wonderful week ahead, my friend @silvertop, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

I really enjoyed this walk with you through your town and enjoyed looking at the photos. It seems a beautiful little town to live in. But I had to laugh a bit that you call this a little town. To me it didn't look that little at all ... when I compare it to the little village I live in you live in a big but beautiful and very lively town.

The houses are a joy to the eye and I really could wander around there for hours taking in the beauty of each and every house.

Thank you for sharing your view at your hometown with us, have a fantastic Sunday dear @silversaver888. Enjoy and take care! 💖😘🌻

Hahaha😅 ... and you are right, "little" is a relative term. I lived in San Francisco for a while, and the first home I bought was in a large city as well. It is for that reason that I referred to my new town as little. I moved here just 3 years ago. It is a farming town, and my neighborhood is surrounded by agricultural land.
I am glad that you enjoyed looking at the photos. Now... if I took awesome photos like you do, I know that you would enjoy it better. The pictures here do not do justice to the real thing, LOL!
Have a lovely week ahead, my dear @hetty-rowan, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

Beautiful architecture of the houses. It has this colonial-nostalgic flair. Especially the photo with the yellow house, where the cypress trees stand on the right side, gives the overall picture something Mediterranean. One could assume the house is located in Italy.
