Ladies of Hive contest #13 | Food

Another week, another challenge coming from the Ladies from the 'Ladies of Hive' Tribe, which you should absolutely check out, because they are an awesome community.

This weeks topic is about food and there are two questions where you can choose of:

  • If you had a choice to "COOK" or "ORDER DELIVERY," which would you choose, what food would you have, and why?
  • When you cook, what is one of the best dishes of your country/region? Share the recipe with us, please!

Well as you know I love to combine these two questions in one so as always I will do this as well.

The problem starts with Dutch food in general. This is not really 'bad' food or so but it also doesn't really have that many characteristics. A typical Dutch meal would be pancakes, the big ones. Nice food, but I really don't consider this a meal, more like a guilty pleasure.

Source 1 and Source 2

The second one is what we call 'Stamppot' which is mashed potato with any other kind of veggie with there. Awesome food when it is -20 degrees but when it is spring or summer, this stuff is just way too heavy.

So actually when I am checking what is happening in my kitchen, this is most often more international food than actually Dutch food. So here I will skip giving you a receipe of something Dutch, but shift over to something which I recently discoverd.

I have only found the love for Indian food over the last couple of years, for the main reason of that I wasn't that familiar with it. Holland doesn't share the love for Indian takeaway as for instance the United Kingdom has. In the whole city of Eindhoven which is an expat city, there are only two Indian places actually.

And I must admit, I do like take away food. The convenience of this is just winning, but the range of stuff we are able to order isn't that big. So it is better (and healthier and cheaper) to just cook yourself.

One of the things I have recently learned is actually from a Youtube channel called 'Get Curried' and this will be the receipe I will be sharing with you. Indian Food made by a Dutchy so don't mind the classical mistakes!

Palak Paneer

Amazingveganreceipes

Palak Paneer is a dish filled with veggies which has options in there. This one used Paneer cheese in there as carbs which makes it a vegetarian one, but you can also marinate some chicken, or use tofu instead making it vegan. Options all over and that is the cool thing about it!

Step 1

  • Boil water in a big pan and dip 400 grams of spinach leaves in there
  • Take the leaves out and chill them in ice water to stop the boiling process, and secure the greens in there
  • Put all of the leaves in a blender and blend them into a nice mixture. Add some water if your blender isn't going. And hold the lid so it doesn't blow off making you whole room green!

Step 2

  • Dice 2 big onions (it doesn't matter to me if these are green or red onions)
  • Slice and dice 4 cloves of garlic
  • Dice 2 big juicy tomatoes
  • Heat some vegetable oil in a big pan (or ghee is the original, but who has that in their house)
  • Toss in the onion and garlic until they are glazy and add the tomatoes
  • Stir until the tomatoes have fallen apart and the mixture becomes nice and moisty

Step 3

  • Add spices in there for the flavour
  • Salt, and pepper how much you like. You also need some koriander seed (cilantro seed), grinded cumin and garam masala.
  • If you like spicy then toss some pepper powder in there as well.
  • Stir good adding the spinach mixture.
  • Add whatever topping you want. In my case this will be paneer.

Your dish is ready to serve, and you can add naan bread or rice with it.

As you see this isn't rocketscience to make and can be put on the table in like 20 minutes. You can't beat that in ordering something and in how much it costs, because all of the ingredients are very basic.

I would say: Go for it!!

I am not ,much into food but, indian food is so close to us because India is in my neigbour country.

We also prepare "Roties" like, "Paratha", "Thosei" and specially I love "samosa" which is very common among street food carts here in Sri Lanka.

Palak Paneer

Mmm.. I haven't tasted it but. Oh no.. It contains spinach 😅 I hate spinach. Do you like the taste? Anyhow spinach contains Iron.

Well honestly I am not really that much of a spinach person but this tastes way less bitter. And indeed healthy and super cheap to buy!

Mmmm, the Spinach will be a great source of Dietary Iron.
And we can all use that.

Thanks for sharing @karinxxl
