Oh my goodness! You are on it I think you have the right idea with little bit of extra on top of your berries to save them all though for the most part I use soil and leaves if I don't have enough compost. The big thing is to keep it insulated.

I may resort to a some extra shredded deciduous leaves with my compost-top soil mixture to top up the berries.
