I dug over 100 holes this morning
Starting around 8am I got outside before the sun was shining on me and prepped some spots for upcoming plants. I ordered a pallet of Balloon Flowers. Also known as Platycodon grandiflorus.
Since planting a bunch of plants last year I got to see what did not take and left some bare spots where some more plants could go.
The Platycodon grandiflorus plant produces buds that look like balloons as that's where it got its name.
I placed a bunch of dirt in containers. I'm planning on adding some of it back when I put the baloon flowers in the ground. The rest I will use for some upcoming planters.
Placing plants in bare spots should keep down the weeds. Also the Platycodon grandiflorus has a root system that can be made into medicine and other uses so its not just for show.
At some point a black ant got into my shirt and started stinging me. This is not the first time that has happened. Glad it was not a fire ant or some red ant.
I should be getting the plants pretty soon. Glad I got the digging out of the way.
Most of the holes are in part sun. Having sun in the afternoon and evening. From what I've read Balloon Flowers are okay with this and should be a good fit.
While digging in the mulch I came across this mycelium. That's a great sign that fungi is working to break down the mulch into nutrients the plants can better use. I keep seeing fruiting bodies of different mushrooms and mold popping up. Glad to see such an active soil culture.
I miss having a yard but not the landscaping. Wish I had more of a garden and wild land.
Ah maybe one day you will, maybe not in Los Angeles but the surrounding area has alot of large lots.
sneak preview ...
Yep that's them, I planted two of them last year and really liked them so figured I could get some more.
