Fall garden update: Bush cherries

avatar

These are smaller than the tree version of the cherry plant, more of a bush hence its name. I planted them early this year, and they did pretty good up till the summer time. Around then some caterpillar found one of the bush cherries and ate most of its leaves. Though I am glad to see new leaves have formed so it seems it has sort of recovered from that. Only one of them got eaten, not sure why one was picked over the other. Maybe indeed I have two different plants were, two different kinds. Though I really need to wait until they flower and fruit to figure out what kind each one of them are.

Seems the growth is done for the year, as I do not see any new leaf sets growing. The one that got attacked by a caterpillar is has formed its leaves and seems to be just waiting for the cold weather to make them drop. I hope they are some pretty colors when they drop. My blueberry bushes get a bright red so curious to see how the cherry trees and bushes change colors as well in the fall. Maybe the first year its not as dramatic, but really not sure.

Soon enough they will go dormant due to the freezes we get. I expect them to drop all their leaves and then form fresh ones next spring. Hoping I get flowers next year for my bees, I need to keep an eye on when they flower. Most cherry trees flower early on in the spring, which was part of my plan to get them so the solitary bees have more flowers to feed on.

This year a couple flowers formed when I planted them, but they quickly dropped off without any fruit forming. So I am hopeful at least one or two of the cherry plants will flower next year. Not sure if fruit will come from it but something to look forward to regardless.

In a few years I might be pretty tired of cherries, depending on how many these produce I may have to give some away. At the least I hope the bees have some early spring flowers to feed on from these cherry trees.

So basically the Bush cherries will help facilitate your bee keeping? It looks scanty and the attack on it was probably bad, hopefully it'll grow new leaves after the ice and freeze

Yeah cherry trees are known to flower very early in the season. Hopefully the same time that my bees are out and about too.

Hah yeah that caterpillar really tore it up.
