Fall garden update: Akebia vine

avatar

I made this video a few weeks before the fruit ripened and opened.. Well now the fruit has opened up and I picked it off the vine. It only produced one fruit this year and I tried it out for the first time. It has a very mild flavor, full of seeds. Kind of close to the passion fruit taste but very mild in comparison.

This plant produces alot of vine and leaf growth, I am constantly pulling it down to keep it from growing up into the deck supports. Though I do not mind moving these vines once in awhile. As it has a great benefit to my solitary bees. While most plants are still dormant, the Akebia will produce flowers in the early spring and my bees love them.

I planted some more Akebia vines of a different variety, ones called Shirobana. They have white flowers on them, while the one featured in the main part of this video has pinkish purple flowers. Hoping with the two kinds Ill get alot more fruit. I need to find a way to strain out the seeds as it makes it hard to eat the fruit. It indeed has the look of a hotdog in a bun which is quite strange looking for a fruit. But then again the Akebia vine has some weird looking flowers so I guess weird looking fruit follows the cycle.

But I am glad after growing this vine for about five years it has now produced fruit I got to enjoy eating. Though still a mystery how this fruit formed. I guess some flower got pollinated from a different Akebia near by. As the Shirobana's I planted have not flowered yet.

Looking forward to next spring, maybe my Shirobana Akebia's will flower and give the bees extra flowers to enjoy. At this point the leaves will start dropping off due to the cold weather, the vines will remain but go dormant for the most part. And when the weather warms up again and the bees are out and about new flower buds should form. Maybe I will get another fruit if I am lucky.
