[Eng-Esp] Black pacu breeding, knowing an alternative project in Apure - Venezuela / Cría de cachamas, conociendo un proyecto alternativo en Apure – Venezuela
Cuando trabajaba como reportera en una agencia de noticias, mi jefa nos pidió a mí y a mis otros tres compañeros que buscáramos temas relacionados con proyectos productivos alternativos hechos por comunidades en cualquier parte de Venezuela para realizar reportajes, la idea era darle difusión a iniciativas impulsadas por la gente para su bienestar, el desarrollo de su región y del país.
I was interested in the issue of organic food production and I started looking on the Internet to see what appeared there. I came across the blog of a well-known Venezuelan journalist, José Roberto Duque, and an article in which he spoke of a peasant community in Apure state that was raising black pacu in an alternative way and without investing any money.
A mí me interesaba el tema de la producción de alimentos de forma ecológica y empecé a buscar en Internet a ver qué aparecía por ahí. Di con el blog de un conocido periodista venezolano, José Roberto Duque, y un artículo en el que él hablaba de una comunidad campesina en el estado Apure que estaba criando cachamas de una forma alternativa y sin invertir nada de dinero.
The black pacu (colossoma macropomum) is a fish native to the basins of the Orinoco and Amazon rivers, it is omnivorous, it feeds on plankton, fruits and flowers.
La cachama (colossoma macropomum) es un pez originario de las cuencas de los ríos Orinoco y Amazonas, es omnívoro, se alimenta de plancton, frutas y flores.
I thought it was an experience worth spreading and when I finished reading I left the journalist a comment on his blog and just in case he didn't answer I asked several colleagues if anyone had his phone number. I needed him to put me in contact with that community to be able to coordinate a trip there and do my report on this issue.
Me pareció una experiencia digna de difundirse y al terminar de leer le dejé al periodista un comentario en su blog y por si acaso no me respondía pregunté a varios colegas por si alguien tenía su número de teléfono. Necesitaba que él me pusiera en contacto con esa comunidad para poder coordinar un viaje para allá y hacer mi reportaje sobre este tema.
I had not yet presented my proposal to my boss but I was sure she would like it, so I kept collecting information. The next day I managed to talk to the journalist who had written the article and he gave me the number of the key person: Walter Lanz, then I showed my boss my proposal and she said: approved.
Aún no le había presentado mi propuesta a mi jefa pero estaba segura de que le iba a gustar, así que seguí recolectando información. Al día siguiente logré hablar con el periodista que había escrito el artículo y él me dio el número de la persona clave: Walter Lanz, luego le mostré mi propuesta a mi jefa y ella me dijo: aprobada.
The next step was to organize the trip to the Apure state, in the plains of Venezuela, about 430 km from Caracas, approximately 8 hours by road.
El siguiente paso fue organizar el viaje para el estado Apure, en los llanos de Venezuela, a unos 430 km de Caracas, aproximadamente unas 8 horas de carretera.
I called Walter Lanz, he is an agroecologist and he was the one who helped the community that I wanted to visit to start the black pacu breeding project. He told me to set a date and that he would be in charge of coordinating everything with the people there to be able to do the reportage with them.
Llamé a Walter Lanz, él es agroecólogo y fue quien ayudó a la comunidad que queríamos visitar para que iniciaran el proyecto de cría de cachamas. Me dijo que pusiera fecha y que él se encargaría de coordinar todo con la gente allá para poder hacer el reportaje con ellos.
A few days later we went to Apure, my team was made up of the driver from the news agency, my cameraman and me. We left Caracas very early on the day of the trip, around 6:00 in the morning, to be able to be in Apure at noon and take advantage of the afternoon to start our work.
Unos días después nos fuimos rumbo a Apure, mi equipo estaba conformado por el chofer de la agencia de noticias, mi camarógrafo y yo. Partimos de Caracas muy temprano el día del viaje, como a las 6:00 de la mañana, para poder estar en Apure al mediodía y aprovechar la tarde para iniciar nuestro trabajo.
Walter was going to wait for us at the Marisela Agroecological Socialist Livestock Company, Inc., which is about 25 km from a town called El Samán. We arrived there a little before 1:00 in the afternoon and they were already waiting for us with lunch ready hehehe.
Walter nos iba a esperar en la Empresa Socialista Ganadera Agroecológica Marisela, S.A., que queda a unos 25 km de un pueblo llamado El Samán. Allí llegamos un poco antes de la 1:00 de la tarde y ya nos estaban esperando con el almuerzo listo jejeje.
We ate and after a while we went along with Walter and other workers from the herd to the fish farming area, where there is a laboratory, the tanks with broodstock and another lagoon where the black pacu are raised.
Comimos y después de un rato nos dirigimos junto a Walter y otros trabajadores del hato para el área de piscicultura, donde está un laboratorio, los tanques con reproductores y otra laguna donde se crían las cachamas.
There I began to interview this agroecologist passionate about this project who, together with another man named Genaro Díaz, created the Popular School of Pisciculture. First he told me about the paradigms of protein production in Venezuela, something that happens in many parts of the world.
Allí comencé a entrevistar al agroecólogo apasionado con este proyecto quien junto a otro señor llamado Genaro Díaz creó la Escuela Popular de Piscicultura. Primero me habló sobre los paradigmas de la producción de proteína en Venezuela, algo que sucede en muchas partes del mundo.
In Venezuela, he explained, bovine meat has been eaten for less than 250 years when it was introduced to these lands, previously the original inhabitants of regions of the country such as Apure, a state that today has a large part of the country's livestock, had about 7 thousand years fishing and eating the fish that were in their environment, as well as other native animals.
En Venezuela, explicó, se come carne de bovino desde hace menos de 250 años cuando fue introducida a estas tierras, anteriormente los pobladores originarios de regiones del país como Apure, un estado que hoy tiene gran parte del ganado del país, tenían unos 7 mil años pescando y comiendo los peces que había en su entorno, además de otros animales autóctonos.
Like many other things, food also has to do with the economic model that countries follow. Livestock needs a lot of investment to develop and has only benefited small groups of people apart from being very polluting, many toxic substances are used to produce more and it also has a high cost for consumers.
Como muchas otras cosas, la alimentación también tiene que ver con el modelo económico que siguen los países. La ganadería necesita mucha inversión para desarrollarse y sólo ha beneficiado a pequeños grupos de personas aparte de que es muy contaminante, se usan muchas sustancias tóxicas para producir más y también tiene un alto costo para los consumidores.
The goal of the black pacu breeding project is to offer an alternative for people to obtain protein at low or no cost and in a natural way, without anything artificial, says Walter.
El objetivo del proyecto de cría de cachamas es ofrecer una alternativa a la gente de obtener proteína a bajo costo o sin costo alguno y de manera natural, sin nada artificial, asegura Walter.
Many people did not believe that this was possible, they thought that it was necessary to invest in infrastructure, expert personnel and the purchase of special food to start the project, however, all you need is to be willing.
Mucha gente no creía que esto fuera posible, pensaban que se debía invertir en infraestructura, personal experto y compra de alimento especial para comenzar el proyecto, sin embargo lo único que hace falta es tener ganas.
Then we went to where the lagoons are with the black pacu and Walter along with other people showed us how and what they feed them with. That is the key to the project, everything they are given comes from the environment: grains, fruits, vegetables, cereals, grass, cassava ... money is not spent to buy concentrated feed as they do in other traditional fish farms.
Fuimos luego a donde están las lagunas con las cachamas y Walter junto a otras personas nos mostraron cómo y con qué las alimentan. Ahí está la clave del proyecto, todo lo que les dan proviene del entorno: granos, frutas, verduras, cereales, pasto, yuca… no se gasta dinero para comprar alimento concentrado como hacen en otros criaderos tradicionales de peces.
Later, more people who work in the herd arrived and brought a net to take out some specimens and thus show us the size they had reached with alternative, natural feeding.
Luego llegó más gente que trabaja en el hato y trajeron una red para sacar algunos ejemplares y así mostrarnos el tamaño que habían alcanzado con alimentación alternativa, natural.
"It's not about going against cattle, the idea is to complement what has been done for the last 250 years in the field of meat production.", Walter tells us.
“No se trata de ir contra el bovino, la idea es complementar lo que se ha venido haciendo los últimos 250 años en materia de producción de carne.”, nos dice Walter.
Anyway, he gave us a devastating example when he revealed these data to us:
“The productivity of black pacu compared to meat is crazy. In one hectare, around 16 kg of carcass beef can be obtained per year. In the worst case, with minimal feeding, we are going to obtain 300 kg of black pacu per hectare per year."
De todas maneras nos puso un ejemplo demoledor cuando nos reveló estos datos:
“La productividad de la cachama comparada con la carne, es una locura. En una hectárea se pueden obtener alrededor de 16 kg de carne bovina en canal por año. En el peor de los casos, con mínima alimentación, de cachamas vamos a obtener 300 kg por hectárea por año.”
Of course, black pacu is an animal protein not well known in all parts of Venezuela, eating beef is still for many people synonymous with eating well, even status, this has also been influenced by advertising that highlights some foods over others and even puts them as essential to live when in reality they're not. That is why this project also has its cultural side, in the sense of rescuing food that was previously consumed by people.
Claro, la cachama es una proteína animal no muy conocida en todas partes de Venezuela, comer carne de res sigue siendo para mucha gente sinónimo de comer bien, hasta de estatus, en esto también ha influido la publicidad que resalta unos alimentos sobre otros y hasta los pone como indispensables para vivir cuando en realidad no es así. Por eso este proyecto también tiene su lado cultural, en el sentido de rescatar alimentos que anteriormente eran consumidos por la gente.
It was already more than 5:00 in the afternoon and we finished the work for that day, so we took the opportunity to get to know a little about the surroundings of the Marisela Socialist Agroecological Livestock Company, a herd of 63 thousand hectares, previously private and called El Frío that in 2008 it was expropriated by the Venezuelan State to promote various food production projects with the participation of neighboring communities.
Ya eran más de las 5:00 de la tarde y finalizamos el trabajo por ese día, así que aprovechamos para conocer un poco los alrededores de la Empresa Socialista Ganadera Agroecológica Marisela, un hato de 63 mil hectáreas, antes privado y llamado El Frío que en el año 2008 fue expropiado por el Estado venezolano para impulsar varios proyectos de producción de alimentos con la participación de las comunidades aledañas.
The plains landscapes are spectacular, every time I have been in this region I have enjoyed nature a lot and this time it was no exception.

The next day we had planned to visit the community for which I was interested in doing this report, its name: El Zancudo, located in Apurito, Achaguas municipality of Apure state.
Al día siguiente teníamos previsto visitar la comunidad por la que me interesé en hacer este reportaje, su nombre: El Zancudo, ubicada en Apurito, municipio Achaguas del estado Apure.
It dawned cloudy and a little rain fell, apparently the horses that we met on the road were happy with this weather, fortunately after a while the sun came out.
Amaneció nublado y cayó un poco de lluvia, al parecer los caballos que nos encontramos en el camino estaban contentos con este clima, afortunadamente luego salió el sol.
Founded in the 1950s, the community of El Zancudo is home to about 148 families. People organized to make the project of breeding black pacu a reality to obtain a healthy protein produced at no cost by themselves.
Fundada en los años ’50, en la comunidad de El Zancudo habitan unas 148 familias. La gente se organizó para hacer realidad el proyecto de cría de cachamas para obtener una proteína sana producida sin costo alguno por ellos mismos.
It all started when Walter Lanz passed through the area, saw that they had a lagoon and asked them if they were interested in having a black pacu farm there. The answer was positive.
Todo comenzó cuando Walter Lanz pasó por la zona, vio que tenían una laguna y les preguntó si estaban interesados en tener un criadero de cachamas allí. La respuesta fue positiva.
These lagoons are not natural, they are holes that were made in various parts of the state when in the 1960s the road in the area was built. They are called "loans" because it was land that they extracted to make the asphalt roads and those holes were filled with water by the rains, forming lagoons.
Estas lagunas no son naturales, son huecos que fueron hechos en varias partes del estado cuando en los años ’60 se construyó la vialidad de la zona. Se les llama “préstamos” porque fue tierra que extrajeron para hacer las vialidades de asfalto y esos huecos se fueron llenando de agua por las lluvias formando lagunas.
Pedro Nieves, a resident of El Zancudo, peasant, teacher and spokesperson for the Communal Council told us that this lagoon had been cleaned in the beginning to do some recreational activities but they received Walter's proposal and then the fry and began to raise black pacu there.

Another inhabitant of the area, Eulises Solórzano, told us that at first he didn't believe much that this project was possible.

“We were used to working in private companies and they had told us that the only thing possible was raising cattle, the rest was crazy. I was thinking, with no money and nothing, how do you make a black pacu project? that requires so much money. I saw that they brought the little black pacu, they threw them in the lagoon, they began to grow and now I do know that it is possible, they eat everything except concentrated food, the entire organized community collaborates with food scraps and any food from there: mangoes, caujara , guavas ... "
“Estábamos acostumbrados a trabajar en empresas privadas y nos habían metido que lo único posible era la cría de ganado, lo demás era una locura. Pensaba yo, sin dinero y sin nada ¿cómo se hace un proyecto de cachamas? eso requiere tanta plata. Vi que trajeron las cachamitas, las tiraron en la laguna, comenzaron a crecer y ahora yo si sé que es posible, comen de todo menos alimento concentrado, toda la comunidad organizada colabora con restos de comida y cualquier alimento de por ahí: mangos, caujara, guayabas...”
Without investing a single bolivar (currency of Venezuela), people have obtained a free protein for their diet.
Sin invertir un solo bolívar, la gente ha obtenido una proteína gratis para su alimentación.
In this black pacu hatchery with artisanal and agroecological methods, the children of the community were also involved, both feeding them and also swimming whenever they can in the lagoon to keep the water moving and prevent the fish from lacking oxygen.
En este criadero de cachamas con métodos artesanales y agroecológicos también se involucraron los niños de la comunidad, tanto alimentándolas como también nadando cada vez que pueden en la laguna para mantener el agua en movimiento y evitar que a los peces les falte el oxígeno.
When I went to El Zancudo there were about 12 more lagoons and they were about to be incorporated to expand the breeding of black pacu. In addition, other communities were interested when they saw that it was not necessary to invest money.
Cuando fui en El Zancudo había unas 12 lagunas más y estaban por incorporarlas para ampliar la cría de cachamas. Además otras comunidades se interesaron al ver que no hacía falta invertir dinero.
A lady from the community surprised me and my work team by offering us some black pacu for lunch that she had cooked with wood, they were delicious!
Una señora de la comunidad nos sorprendió a mí y a mi equipo de trabajo ofreciéndonos de almuerzo unas cachamas que había cocinado a leña, ¡estaban deliciosas!
In this way we culminate our journalistic work and we take away an extraordinary experience to disseminate, an example of how an organized community can beat the capitalist logic that for everything you have to invest money. They are taking advantage of the natural resources of their environment to produce food ecologically.
De esta manera culminamos nuestro trabajo periodístico y nos llevamos una extraordinaria experiencia para divulgar, un ejemplo de cómo una comunidad organizada puede ganarle a la lógica capitalista de que para todo hay que invertir dinero. Ellos están aprovechando los recursos naturales de su entorno para producir comida ecológicamente.
We learned that this project is being developed in several states of Venezuela to benefit more people, I hope they are doing well!
