Fig grafting & camper van wedding

IMG_2293.jpeg

We have just returned from the wedding of Sabrina's brother in Nimes which was quite an adventure because rather than paying for a hotel we rented a camper van and tested out how it felt living in there as a family. But before I tell you about that I want to continue on from my last post by telling you about fig grafting.

We have this fig tree in our courtyard which produces a dark black/purple variety and we would like to attach a different lighter variety to the top of the tree.

image.png

Here is the scion wood (mother plant) which I cut from a neighbour's enormous tree. It is a green variety of fig with an amazing vanilla flavour.

IMG_2268.jpeg

Here is the piece I removed from our tree. I made sure the replacement piece was around the same diameter as the one it is being attached to.

IMG_2267.jpeg

Using my fancy new grafting knife I then cut what is known as a wedge graft.

IMG_2269.jpeg

The cambium of the sticks (inner white bit) must line up for a successful graft.

Not gonna lie, this is my first attempt at fig grafting so I cannot say with certainty it will work yet, but something tells me it will be alright.

IMG_2274.jpeg

Next we seal off the connection with a tight wrap of cling film.

IMG_2276.jpeg

Under this section one must then make a cut on either side of the wood.

IMG_2278.jpeg

This is because the sap in a fig tree flows with force and without these little cuts there is a possibility that it will actually push the graft off over time.

IMG_2279.jpeg

Finally I created a mini greenhouse of sorts by loosely wrapping cling film around the entire newly grafted scion wood.

IMG_2280.jpeg

I left enough at the top to pull it over like this.

IMG_2281.jpeg

And tie it off in order to keep the rain out.

IMG_2282.jpeg

In fact what we have in this pot is two fig trees, both of which now have grafts attached. And in case you are wondering, the little plants growing at the base of the trees are rocket.

IMG_2287.jpeg

Will update you later in the season. On this and the plum tree in our garden which now has almond, peach & apricot growing on it. The scion wood cuttings seen below.

IMG_2247.jpeg

Look carefully and you will see a total of ten bud grafts on this tree now, turning a simple plum tree into so much more.

IMG_2259.jpeg

Exciting times by my standards!

Weddings glorious weddings

Back in my London days I filmed & edited weddings every weekend because it was a lucrative business for me.

IMG_1169.jpeg

But the effect of all those weddings was ultimately an attitude of indifference towards them. It became clear these occasions had very little to do with the union of two people in a life-long bond and much more to do with blindly following tradition, the ego or money related issues.

On this occasion I was not the cameraman and even better, we were going in a camper van!

IMG_2292 2.jpeg

Here you can see Sabrina & her mother getting their make-up 'professionally' done on the morning of the wedding.

IMG_2297.jpeg

Esteban & Luna looked cool in their outfits ;)

Here's Sabrina & I, getting into the music.

Bride & groom here.

Esteban & friends were the centre of attention with their dancing.

Screenshot 2022-03-15 at 11.25.52.png

But unlike the other children Esteban was still there with the 'survivors' getting very crazy towards the end of the night. It was weird how comfortable he was surrounded by extremely drunk people!

Screenshot 2022-03-15 at 11.29.40.png

There was a beautiful organic moment right at the end in which the DJ started playing 'Time of my life' from Dirty Dancing and some of the guys formed a line on the floor, permitting other people to run and dive on to them, being carried along to the end.

Here is Sabrina's brother doing exactly that.

Screenshot 2022-03-15 at 17.10.09.png

And here's Esteban doing it!

Screenshot 2022-03-15 at 07.41.31.png

Am pretty sure I would not have had the confidence to do this when I was six years old.

Screenshot 2022-03-15 at 07.40.30.png

Was grateful to see the lady at the end of the row who gently aided him down.

Screenshot 2022-03-15 at 07.42.03.png

Needless to say Esteban was ecstatic for having done it.

Screenshot 2022-03-15 at 07.45.29.png

Yeah, I wasn't the cameraman but I still filmed everything on my GoPro ;)

While I may not agree with occasions like this, I do still believe that if a person is going to spend a ton of money on one night of fun, they might as well throw in a bit extra to have someone film it.

I will send them the video free of charge in due course and they will be grateful to have something rather more permanent than the night itself.

The experience of being in a camper van was a bit testing if I'm going to be honest. With Sabrina's parents there were six of us in there, which is probably too many for such a small space. Plus, I left a window open before setting off on the way back and it blew off with a windy gust on the motorway! So we lost our deposit and I had to learn the hard way that camper van windows are not like car windows.

We are still intending to buy a motorhome of our own but nothing which ticks all our boxes has come up yet. If these petrol prices keep going up, something tells me we will be seeing a bunch more vehicles on the market as people realise they are no longer affordable to run.

Time will tell...

Love & Light everyone 🌱

Beautiful, beautiful pictures. Marvellous reading. Oh, I do love camper vans and weddings (even if you no longer do?). Your fun spins off the page like a digital torrent, I’m absolutely invested in your wonderful story. Thank you for posting. Love it💕🌸💓
PS: your fig tree (and your plum tree) are awesome

Hey there. Your kind words are much appreciated.

It's not to say that I don't enjoy weddings. One can have fun in almost any situation if one knows how. It's just that I think the meaning has been lost and it is usually a big old waste of money. Did you know that in the past weddings were simple, low budget affairs, revolving mostly around sharing the excess produce farmers had to offer at the time? No one even considered wearing white dresses till Queen Victoria wore one on her wedding in 1840. Because who in their right mind is going to buy a super expensive dress which can be worn but once? Only in our modern folly is such blatant waste regarded as normal.

Happy to be back in my garden now where life is as it should be :)

I hear you, but (Haha), I make wedding dresses for a living.😂😂😂❤️💕

No way! What a weird coincidence. Well... that is an incredible creation and it looks like you are very good at what you do.

And clearly I am in no position to criticise having milked the wedding industry for two decades with my video camera, charging three times my normal price ;)

Thank you for sharing the image and I wish you all the best with your future creations. Something tells me you are able to make other things with great skill too...

Hey Sam,
I am fascinated with grafting, but have yet to try it myself.
I am with you re. weddings, but in saying that, my little sister is getting married in June and me and my girls will return to Ireland for it. Been 3 years since I saw them and all restrictions have been lifted, for now anyway.
I am sure the perfect camper will come for you all. That is a small one indeed for so many. Get a diesel one, then you an convert it to run on used veggie oil xxxxx

Go with it I say! If restrictions are permitting and your sister is inviting, you know it must be done. Am sure you will have a fab time after three years away!

Good call with the diesel engine which can be converted in the future. Hadn't thought about that. Much appreciated! xxx

That was a good idea to test a camper, instead of paying for a hotel. But you are also right, the price of petrol is going up, so maybe it would not be the cheapest way to travel :D

Your children look so sweet in that outfit :))

I would say the price of everything will continue to rise so yes, many people will sell their vehicles and start using the bus. It is unfortunate these people are probably not crypto holders and are also unaware how the money in their bank is quickly losing value. I love one of the suggestions above, which is to buy a diesel engine which can be converted to run on vegetable oil in the future. Now that sounds like a sensible thing to do. Especially when one plans to have lots of vegetables in the future ;)

That is a good idea. Both to have a garden full of vegetables and thinking about alternatives for energy.
Prices are rising indeed, of everything (not my salary though)

I am especially excited about your grafting updates. You start to become quite a pro, it seems.

Weddings don't excite me at all but I'm glad Esteban had fun ;<)

Sending you a hug from Portugal!

Am always comforted when my less traditional thoughts here are echoed by the people I respect. Thank you for that.

For the grafting let's see! Looking at the bud grafts yesterday some of them didn't seem too happy after all this rain we've been having and I am wondering now if I shouldn't have added one more layer of clingfilm to cover the entire bud. Whatever happens I will post about it and if at first we don't succeed we try try and try again...

Did you know that mango can be grafted with avocado? Two of my most favourite flavours :) Just need to find a dwarf variety of both trees in order to grow them in greenhouses.

Hugs hugs hugs!

Sure thing. Great minds think alike ;<)

Mango and avocado together on one tree sounds like paradise. I love both of these fruits loads!

P.S. I just caught a bunch of snails redhanded ( if snails would have red hands ), munching on my baby lettuce in the dark. I threw them away as far as I could and covered what remains of my baby lettuce ( not much ). It's nature though, they can't help it.

Am not exactly sure why but we don't have a snail problem in our garden. Yet here in our courtyard I regularly catch them munching. My only thought is that snails perhaps don't like sliding across lots of open dirt with no plants growing in it (to get to the lettuces in the middle). Whereas here in the courtyard it is easy for them to slide down a wall, along the floor and into a plant pot. Amazing creatures really!

Bonjour mon ami,

My veggie garden sure is easy to reach, if they weren't already hiding in there ( probably close by ).

On the plus side, I learnt a lot about snails, by researching afterwards. I might actually write a post about them soon. Yesterday my niece and nephew and two other kids played with / observed a snail for half an hour or so while I taught them some stuff. A beautiful moment.

Amazing creatures indeed!

That grafting looks very cool! I must learn this skill too! That’s quite a wild wedding party! People were really having a good and crazy fun time!

Grafting feels like it could be something extremely useful in the future. Particularly if one has the opportunity to learn these skills as a child and develop them throughout their life. Who knows what magic might unveil itself if enough time is spent trying out different ideas?

Yes, the wedding was pretty wild towards the end, though in truth I've not been to many that weren't! I discovered the next day that a total of 35 glasses were broken, so I suppose this is a pretty good measure of how wild it was ;)

Wow! 35 broken glasses! I wonder how people could find their way home! We don’t have wild wedding parties here; all too formal. But private parties could be quite wild with grass smoking!
I really must make time to acquire new skills!
Things are moving too fast! Changes are being forced on people.

Take care.

It was an experience we needed to have I think. All experiences are lessons :)

And sure, I loved the party! My French gets a lot better when I am drunk and I am much more inclined to communicate with people.
