Home Gardeding - Planting Potatoes

avatar

In our backyard we have a raised bed, sort of. It's made from the logs that I've cut down years ago. Also years ago we planted some potatoes in it. This year, when I was preparing the bed for the season I found some forgotten potatoes in the ground, I took then out to replant them elsewhere and forgot about them.

You can say that these potatoes were twice forgotten.

Today I prepared a small bed for them by the fence. I had some soil left and what I did was to put some logs together and throw the soil in it.

Then I cut the potatoes in half and planted them in the soil.

I know they should have more space. Yet, it's an experiment and not an industrial field.

What do you say, will anything grow?

By the way, it looks that I didn't dig out every potato from the raised bed. At least two of them are growing again which is great. It shows how resilient potato is.

It’s amazing how resilient vegetable are. We have herbs that come back every year which I did not realize that they would.

Yes, we need each other to grow with one another and now outgrow each other. I will! 😊

Yest, it is amazing. I am always so surprised with nature's power. And grateful that I have the opportunity to plant what little I can.

I second that. Our plot of land is pretty shady so we are limited to herbs close to the house. Both out neighbors have 1/4 acre gardens that are amazing.

Do you have the plants under the roof too? Our garden (tiny backyard) is facing directly towards east. Which means that the sun is not too strong. Which is good and bad :)

Some of the plants, like tomatoes, are under the roof so I have to water them. Which is, again, good and bad. I can control the amount of water, rain doesn't mess with the leaves, ... Yet, when I am not at home for several days I need to make the arrangements with the neighbours ...

They sit on our back patio so they get sun and water pretty easily. The rest of our yard is covered in maple and pines that are pretty mature so the root systems are large and they block a lot of the sun.

It is important for us to be self sufficient nowadays because we still don't know how long this pandemic might be. Potatoes are so easy to produce and this is a super feasible info for every community members to know. Definitely a great post to reshare. I don't have any voice here on hive but you will be forever be regarded as one of the coolest persons who shared a viable info to prolong one's survival moments.
