This Is NOT War!

Words matter. Words are the basis of our thoughts and can be used in many ways, and when used wisely they will evoke emotions, educate and set moods. This is why words have power, why the pen in mightier than the sword.

Our spiritual and ideological leaders, who are also the ones at the top if the pyramid-shaped social food-chain, are expert users of language and words. Not too long ago I briefly focused on the use of doublespeak by marketing people and governments in Nineteen Eighty-Four Elections, and how tactical use of euphemisms and hyperboles influence our public mindset in a way that makes it possible to believe the opposite of the truth. I'll give one simple example: the Department Of Defense used to be called the Department Of War. The military of developed countries aren't used for defense, but for the opposite.

In this current pandemic I see headlines everywhere, speaking of a war against the virus. Most reporting is written and spoken in the language of war. Just like it was one time decided that "drugs", "cancer" and "terrorism" are our enemies that should be conquered in a war against them. There is no war against any of those fabricated "enemies." Terrorism isn't a country, it's an ideology (and ideas are "killed" with ideas, not with weapons), drugs isn't a country, and neither are cancer or the corona virus; they're all problems, shared problems to be precise. And they can only be solved by coming together and cooperate as a society. Instead of a "war against the corona virus", the truth should be addressed with a slogan like "cooperation against the corona virus" of "Unified Against Corona" or something like that. Because words matter, and the constant usage of the same language captures us in an unchanging mindset.

The virus isn't our enemy; it doesn't care who or what it infects or thrives in; if anything, the virus needs us alive because when we're all dead, it dies with us. This is THE perfect moment to change the words we use, but that will not happen anytime soon, as our leaders will be damned before they destroy the mindset they've so carefully cultivated over a century. That's why, for now, it's on us: be aware of the language used in the mainstream and on the public square, and try to educate the ones you encounter that replicate that ill begotten language of our so called intellectual leaders. This is not to take away from the seriousness of this moment in time by the way, so here's a short video on how badly the situation is handled in a world where everything is a struggle, countries are at war, for real and in the marketplace, and society is merely a collection of profit seeking individuals.

“This Is a War,” Says Doctor on COVID-19. “We Are at the Beginning of a Surge, and It’s Terrifying.”
