About Guidance and Counselling
The actual differences between guide and counselling has been a subject of debate, even among specialists. Guidance is a broad term applied to a total school programme of activities and services aimed at assisting students to plan and to achieve satisfactory adjustment in life. Guidance encompasses the total needs of the individual student to be guided. In other words, guidance is a systematic way of collecting informations about individuals and groups by means of objective standardized tests.

On the other hand, counselling is one of the guidance services. It is a relationship between two persons where one person is aware or is assisted through a systematic guidance to become aware of a problem and the need to talk it over with another person (the counsellor)

In a counselling process, the person to be counselled can come to understand himself so that he can solve his own problems. It is the process of helping a person or group of persons to solve his or their problems. In this process, a relationship is established between two persons in which one tries to help others to understand and solve their problems.

In counselling for example the individual learns new ways of communicating, new ways to obtaining information, new ways of making decisions, new ways of responding to the environment and new ways of interacting. A guidance counsellor is therefore a professional trained person in guidance and counselling who provides help to individual students based on the need of each student. Guidance and counselling programmes assist all students in assessing and understanding their abilities, aptitudes, interests and educational needs.

There are many areas of guidance and counselling in education ranging from academics, vocational, personal (social). In terms of academics, it is aimed at helping students to make appropriate choice of school, courses, subjects and how improve upon their study habits. Vocational guidance helps students to make appropriate choice of job and career and to provid them with career information.
