Improving Your Lexicon

Knowledge is precious and wisdom pertinent, there is no better feeling than knowing that you know and that you are confident of what you know. It is the reason why one may find themselves fumbling during a presentation or tripping during an examination, because not knowing cause us to loss confidence whiles knowledge equips us gives us that confidence back.

Today i would like to share on one of the best way to improve upon your english which actually worked for me. Whiles there are lots of online courses that would do you lots of good in getting you started on english, the rules, grammar etc. There is an unspoken rule about having to learn a language and it goes without saying that speaking, writing, listening and reading is the best way to go. It is for this reason why most language exams revolve around these three things.

Reading and Writing

The best way to improve upon your english or your lexicon is to read, read and read some more. Reading exposes you to new words, reading exposes you to new sentence structures you probably thought were wrong, reading improves your writing because you end up using great sentence structures as you have read in your writing. The more you read the more you feel confident about your skills in a language.

So here is what i suggest, as a guardian you can encourage you ward into adopting the habit of reading by getting them stories that excite their interest. Each child has what excite them and whiles some may want to read about barbie diaries, others may prefer greed mythology whiles some may even prefer to read about metaphysics or Eisteins Theories, whichever it may be, these books are filled with words that they have not encountered before. Get them a diary and encourage them to pen down any new words they come across in the diary and to find the meaning of the words. Try to engage them in conversations and let them try to use these words in sentences as often as possible. It is like the rule of anatomy goes.

For students here who may be preparing to write their SAT or GRE examinations, i can vehemently say that it would help you a lot, in getting those big words down in your memory, and also when you have to write essay and make inferences.

Listening and Speaking

The avenues to improve once vocabulary is numerous now however most people do not see those avenues for what they could truly contribute to them. Let take for instance watching a very good fiction movie. Most people would just watch it for watching sake, and enjoy the show and go away, but the thing with these movies is that they have profession script writers who probably have a PhD in English and so really know what they are about when it comes to their language, so it can be a great avenue. I know this because there are lots of times that i have come across words that i was familiar with in a movie and i had to learn. I guess the important things is been self conscious about you been amenable to grasp all you can from it. If you hear it, find the mean and practice by speaking it to others. And soon you will have amazing grasp over which language your are seeking to learn.
