IS PHILOSOPHY SICK?

Philosophy, this word is known and used as much by the common man, as by the intellectual, the scientist; to make a distinction and not to place these last ones in our same plane. In its simplest meaning the word derives from the Greek Philos, which means love and Sophia which means wisdom, knowledge or knowledge. Philosophy as a discipline reached its maximum splendor in ancient times in Greece. Philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle and Socrates, to name a few, enriched this "love of wisdom".

As philosophy evolved, new branches or theories emerged as its support, among which we can mention ontology, gnoseology, epistemology, logic and ethics. All these branches of philosophy aim to support it in the study, classification and nature of knowledge, to determine how man should live, the things that surround him and their nature, to judge what is genuine knowledge and the correct principles of reasoning. As can be seen philosophy is broad and "It is worth doing good philosophy, because it provides a favorable position for the study of anything, whether it is a concrete object or an abstract idea" (Bunge; 2002).

One of the main causes, which scholars have blamed for the current decline of philosophy, is the lack of renewal of its fields of study. It has not dedicated itself to the problems that humanity suffers from. A daily example in our Venezuelan society is to hear about problems of corruption, disrespect to parents, high cost projects that fail due to lack of knowledge, delinquency and others. The interesting thing is that we have our implicit hypotheses about the causes of these problems and the common answers are a lack of morals, ethics or values. But if this is the field of philosophy, then we could deduce that philosophy or the lack of its application has caused in part these problems, because we are justly blaming it for many of the ills that our society suffers from. But, what happened to philosophy? Some philosophers affirm that it gradually became more and more anchored in the study and discussion of classical problems of the past. Such a philosophy lacks usefulness for today's world, so it is not surprising the lack of interest in philosophy in our days.
